Archer is a terrible fiinisher. We knew that when we signed him so why on earth is he being played as our centre forward instead of the only player we have who can finish, Dibling?

We didn't play well today. We were up against the 2nd worst team in the league after us and we were penned back in and around our own penalty area desperately defending aginst a bunch of Championship players for most of the game as if we were up against Real Madrid. Only 2 incredible saves from Ramsdale saved us from defeat.

I disagree. I thought we played well. Not a perfect performance but it was much better and I enjoyed it. It wasn't just two incredible saves that saved us from defeat. They were excellent saves, but their keeper also made some saves. Us hitting the post also saved them from defeat. That chance wasn't easy having seen it again. Diaz had a chance to show that he is a striker but he blazed the ball into row Z. We would have been 2 nil up and would probably have won the game. Dibling is effective in the position he plays: scoring goals, winning penalties, creating chances and driving runs. I feel more positive after today's game.

Ipswich had twice as many shots on target as we did and 5 times more corners. For much of the game we were so deep in our own half that we didn't have a single player within 10 yards of the halfway line. What saved us was that we were playing against the only team in the league almost as bad as ours, with equally poor finishing.

Admittedly, in Dibling and Ramsdale we had the 2 best players on the pitch, but our team performance and tactics were woeful and the substitutions made things much worse.

I also thought Fernandez was really good. We were much better in defence too without Walker Peters and without Stephens. Looking at the table, it's still early days. We are still "only" 3rd from bottom, as there are other teams who are also really struggling. At least we are improving and I can see Dibling, Ramsdale, Fernandez as possible match winners and really getting good. It will be a struggle, but I can see positives.

With the right manager and the right tactics, we've probably got 11 players in the squad good enough to finish 17th, and certainly of a higher quality than Ipswich have but, they've not all been played together in the right positions yet this season and even if/when they are, the substitutions will see a drop off in quality.

We were outmanaged today by a team with inferior players. Apart from passing a lot to each other I don't know what our players do in training, but we seem to have no real plan for creating and scoring goals. A sublime pass from Lallana and a great finish from Dibling were more to do with their personal initiative and skill than any team planning. The only team plan seems to be to pass the ball around as far back as necessary to avoid opposition players, which, as Ipswich pushed farther and farther forward, ended up with our entire team passing the ball around just in front of our own goal.

What we do is the exact opposite of what Man City do. They have Rodri a couple of yards inside the opposition half, spraying passes, all forwards, to the other players as they swarm around the opposition penalty area, taking shots every time they see the slightest opportunity.

No it's squarely on Archer for missing chances and then Diaz blasting the ball into row Z, when it was easier to score. No wonder he plays on the wing. And then players not closing down the equaliser.

Nonetheless, Saints played well. We just can't finish teams off because we don't have a killer striker. It's no surprise.

We seem to have ended up with a roster of strikers who just cannot finish!

Nobby, are we really expected to believe the ruse that you've been posting your dribble (and replying) from the stadium during the game for the third home game running?

Simple question, yes or no?

If yes, you really need to get a life

Correct.

The early substitutions killed us, it put us on the defensive & we all know that we concede late in the game when under pressure.
Alright a couple of our players were looking tired & needed replacing but to make so many changes ruined us offensively.
I thought Sugawara + Fernández + Lallana + Dibling stood out today mainly because they are prepared to take a chance & play the ball forward.
I love the way Sugawara is so direct & gets us forward quickly, his long cross field passes to switch play are brilliant.
KWP is going to struggle to get back in.

This post hits the nail on the head for what is wrong with the way we are being coached to play. Lots of very good points here that it's hard to disagree with.

It was mentioned by TV pundits several times about us not having a player on the edge of the penalty area when defending corners and set pieces. Yet again, it cost us yesterday. We are failing on very simple, basic tactics. Like our modus operandi, passing the buck.

Poll: How many wins this season sweepstake

Ipswich Game Matchday Thread on 12:50 - Sep 22 with 767 viewsUmPahars

Yesterday against a Championship+ side highlighted a few things for me.

Firstly, quite a few haven’t been able to make the step up!

Those who are ok;
Ramsdale
Sugawara
THB
Bednarek
Downes
Dibling
KWP

Those who might:
Lallana (showed in patches he still has the brain, but was sometimes physically struggling. A better team would have exploited it more)
Taylor (you can get away with an average full back, but I have doubts)
Fernandes (played well and tackled back but early days)
Ugochokwu (maybe more in hope, but we need an enforcer)
Archer (only because he got them on the back foot a few times, but he doesn’t look clinical enough)

And then sadly you’ve got:
Fraser (a division too far)
Smallbone (see above)
Aribo (see above)
Armstrong (see above)
Stewart (reminded me of feeding the giraffes at Marwell and contributed nothing)
Diaz (didn’t do anything - has lovely hair though)
Cornet (yuk)

And then there’s some of the tactics and substitutions. They’re on RM and he was found wanting. Invited pressure on. I’ve mentioned defending corners elsewhere and as others have said we are sloppy.

We looked ok in parts against another championship team, but Premier teams will bury us if we don’t learn quickly.

Is there enough in the squad to get 17th?? I doubt it but it’s not an impossibility
