If a miracle happened and we went up via the playoffs 09:09 - Jan 19 with 17803 viewsnumptydumpty

Would you want that ???

For me, an emphatic NO...

If the playing fields were much more even, then absolutely yes, but it could do to us like what has happened to Luton and many others.

We are on the crest of a wave currently - and I want that to continue for as long as is possible.

Yes this scenario is very unlikely to happen but just wondered what others thought.

It's amazing what's happening at the moment but the Leicester game who have lost seven in a row in the premiership shows the gulf.

Just wondering what others think ??

Yeah, I can just imagine Nourry saying no to promotion…

We’ve got a way to go to that hypothetical and don’t forget we just lost 6:2 to Leicester who are adrift with the Scummers.

Now, a playoff run would help soften the Cup failings and put a decent amount of money away, not least from the showcasing of some players.

6th place would be a realistic goal to give us that opportunity and the next batch of games look like we could gain some points on those above us if we hold our own.

Let’s face it, that would be more massive than West Ham - for us….

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

I know this is a hypothetical conversation, but I thought I'd check out the bookies' odds for the craic.

Relegation - 12/1
Top 6 - 25/1

Have not had the time to read all 5 pages of responses but here is my take.

If I was Nourry and the owners in this current window, there should be no talk of "going for it" or "backing the manager" - we stick to a strategy that we are looking at stability and ensuring there is no realistic fear of relegation for this season. They stuck with Marti for the first half of the season and he now appears to have pulled us out of a nose dive as we recovered from a period of key player injuries and adapting and integrating new and younger players and thus far it seems to be now heading in the right direction.

Last Saturday, I think of the 11 of the clubs above us, only 3 actually won their game, some lost and others drew - hence we are still close to the top 6.

If by some miracle that gap kept closing and we continue with this "rich vein of form" and ended up finishing in the playoffs - then what an achievement.

The next bit is the hard bit. If we won the playoffs, then great - Premier League for one season - everyone remembers who the feck QPR is and then likely we spend the year getting spanked by the big boys like Southampton and Ipswich.

However, unlike last time, the board HAVE to accept that relegation is highly likely and that will not be directly the fault of Marti and his team. Therefore, the Board, the club, and importantly the "fan" base accept it for what it is, get behind Marti and the boys.

We don't spunk all the money "to try and stay up" enjoy our season in the Prem as much as we can and pocket the Sky money and use it sensibly to continue for PSR/FFP recovery and and financial stability. The downside is the constant battering every week in the Premier league may mentally hang over in to the following year and we become like Luton.

So if it were to happen then hey-ho, but I would rather we finish 8-10th this year, pat Marti and the team on the back and say "onwards and upwards" after a season that we hoped for actually did transpire after a horrid start.

Well, discussions on here have changed a bit since November!

This thread is all good knockabout fun, but nobody seriously believes this a promotion squad, do they? Oh really? But..we were in the bottom three and hopeless six weeks ago. You know what they say about pride coming before a five match losing run and a fall down the table.

(yes, please hold the line Mr Warburton, February, March and April 2022 will be with you in a moment...)

In all seriousness, it's as likely as Ian Holloway still being in charge of Swindon at Christmas.

If a miracle happened and we went up via the playoffs on 17:34 - Jan 20 with 1317 viewsLanhoop

At the end of November, Blackburn were in 6th place with 28 points and we were 23rd with 14. 10 matches later they are now in 5th with 42 points and we are 12th with 35.

Somehow this squad has halved the points gap. If the points trajectory continues then yes it is a promotion squad.

It’s been done by others before but never by us and I can’t imagine it happening but it’s more fun to consider it than continue worrying about being dead and buried.

As you say though, we will now fail to win any of the next 6 matches.

To be fair, Blackburn have played Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland since the end of November. That's a much harder run than we've had.

Thanks, you just saved me alot of writing.
Totally agree. The only snag is, the point about MC not being sacked. Not sure any board can be trusted to keep their word. Nearly all managers, right or wrong, get canned when bottom of the prem. That for me, is the biggest downfall if we were to go up. We'd almost certainly lose Marti. I'd rather have him around a bit longer. 5 years at least 😊

Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

A good point (imo).

When Bees got promoted from League One in 2013/14, under a certain Mark Warburton(!), they made a very good attempt at gaining an immediate second promotion (tailed off to finish 5th and flunked the p/o's).

Had we gone up to the PL that time it would have been a disaster, since our players simply weren't good enough eg our leading striker was Andre Gray.

Then after five seasons consolidating and building in the Championship, in 2019/20 we got to the P/O Final and were beaten by Fulham, before winning the P/O's the following season (vs Swansea). Most Bees fans agree that the first time probably would have been too soon, so we'd have struggled to survive. But by the second season, we were so much better prepared eg signing Ivan Toney as our main striker, hence our staying up.

All that said, we'd still all have taken it in the Fulham defeat season, if only because the parachute money would still have given a massive boost to our chances of bouncing straight back up following a one season relegation. As eg Fulham did after they had gone up before us.

So if you get the chance, go for it!

Isn't the point about Luton that they're using their unexpected one season windfall to help pay for their new stadium?

Which over the long term, will do far more for them than spunking it on players transfers and wages, in a hardly-guaranteed attempt to bounce straight back up again.

They took two points from the two home matches and one away.
Against the same opponents we took two points from one home match and two away.

All we're proving is the championship is pretty closely matched.

Take it from an ex-bookie, that's not the way to do it. If you must have a punt, decide which is the more likely, no matter how marginally, then put ALL your stake money on that.

Otherwise you're absolutely guaranteed that one bet/half your dosh will be a loser.

Of course you may decide that the other bet has so little chance that it's not worth backing either, in which case save your money for The Derby in June.

And some fans want the club to disrespect cup competitions for, what would be for many, an unpallatable return to a league we'd never really compete in.
Just making up the numbers like Brentford and Fulham.

God, I hate this modern game sometimes.

All very well having the best stadium in league 1 mind.

It’s not mutually exclusive as you lot have proved. Find the whole debate here a bit misleading, it’s fundamentally about making good decisions (on players, managers, club upgrades etc etc). With more money the stakes on those decisions are higher, so getting them right pays off big time and getting them wrong screws you for, in our case, a decade.

All the clubs that have done it successfully have smart people upstairs who get those calls right (all the bs - Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth).

Nourry might be that smart person, we don’t know yet, but we know our owners are not those smart people. Just have to hope when the time comes we have someone who can get the big decisions right, because if fecking Bournemouth can be 5th then we have to aspire to at least be at the bloody table.

I suspect 90%+ of Bees fans would far rather "make up the numbers" in the PL, than go back to the Championship. While I am sure the owner and execs at the club are determined to try to progress to beyond that status, even if it must seem long odds-against to neutral outsiders.

As for Fulham fans, I'd guess it's the same, at least if their owners weren't gouging them shame-facedly over ticket prices.

Regarding Luton and the best stadium in L1 etc, it's not that long since they were non-league, and in the shittiest stadium South of the Arctic Circle.

The point surely being that the new stadium can give them financial security for the next 50 years i.e. plenty of time for them to climb back up to the PL again, even if after a spell in L1 or below.

(Agree with all the rest of your post)

I've seen 40/1 for top 6, not sure if it's a reputable bookie but those are very good odds considering.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?
