FIFA World Cup thread. 12:02 - Nov 15 with 136714 viewsSnipper

I’m trying to get excited about this World Cup, but to no avail :-((.

I’ve just watched Sky Sports World Cup preview with Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher & Karen Carney. Utterly depressing viewing. Same old, same old. Picking players for the starting XI not playing for their clubs, or totally off form.

I’m hoping this thread can get the juices flowing.

Do any of you think England have a chance?

Really enjoying this game. The Canadians' finishing is woeful but their build up play has been excellent. Poor defending for Belgium's goal though. So, poor finishing and poor defending-where have I seen that before?

Bit of composure needed, not out of it but next goal crucial.

Similar to the US the other night. If they'd been a bit more careful they'd have had Bales. Wales too.

It's a cracking game, first one I've watched this World Cup, and 9only because the missus is Canadian. Canada should be winning this comfortably.
Weren't we linked with the Canadian manager in the summer?

Canada unlucky to only get one penalty in the first half. Should have been two possibly three.

Officials had a stinker on one where they gave an offside after a backpack from a Belgium defender. Commentators didn’t even notice.

Belgium make me feel young!! They're a complete mess & De Bruyne looks like he hates them all.

Canada been a joy to watch

Bit more composure and Canada would had that.

21 shots to Belgium's 9 and ran them ragged.

Brilliant stuff from the Canucks.

Canada have a chance of getting through, was impressed by them. I thought Croatia looked a bit crap as did Morocco so they could nick 4 points from them

However, Chair can’t get on the pitch for Morocco while Hoilett starts for Canada, which suggests quite a gulf in ability.

Hoilett's played pretty well for Canada, since he returned to the fold as a veteran. They're a young squad and Herdman obviously thinks he's worth his place.

I dunno what the issue with Chair and Morocco is. Too small and too slow perhaps?

My pre-tournament guess was: A loss against Belgium. Then: optimistically, a win against Morocco and a tie with Croatia. Pessimistically a loss against Croatia and a draw with Morocco.

Today we played enthusiastically but not very well, especially up front. Three shots on goal from 21 attempts is not great. Defensively OTOH we did better quite a bit better than I expected, or Belgium were pretty poor.

Germany in massive trouble now. If they don't beat Spain they're surely gone due to the goal difference situation. You'd have to think Japan will beat Costa Rica.

They got into so many good positions but finishing was awful. Hoilett still makes the wrong choice 4 times out of 5

Even his cross at the play off final went straight to Keogh. Thankfully Keogh was caught in two minds whether to belt it out first time or control it then belt it. Did neither and pretty much gave it to Zamora!
Still, I guess Hoilett at least had the determination to get the cross in rather than take it to the corner flag as at that point us holding out for penalties was looking the best chance.

As ever with the teams trying to cause an upset, it's the decision making that seems to cost them. I thought Canada's front three looked lively but were incredibly indisciplined and wasteful in possession.

I thought that was the best I've seen him play since he left Blackburn.

My son did mention his magic moment for us though, falling into the photographers hole!

Most of the time they're too busy wittering to actually commentate so it shouldn't make much difference.

Easy chant for the Korean fans though, half the team covered with one song.

Does anyone bother to watch the BBC coverage in UHD?
I've just found out you can if you go via the iPlayer app. I think it looks better on my TV than Skysports UHD however there is a time delay.

There used to be a club cricket team in Bucks called Mohammed. They could usually manage to field a starting eleven with at least nine Mohammeds.

Their scorecards in the Bucks Herald were a little predictable...

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Don't you just miss the Uruguayan footballing philosophy of old whereby if it moved then kick the sh it out of it. Too sanitised nowadays.
