Tier 2 / Tier 3 13:15 - Oct 15 with 42134 viewsaleanddale

Matt Hancock hitting a new level of incompetence today in the commons.

Press leaks prior to confirmation with local authority.... then backtracking.

Dithering over a statement on Manchester and Lancashire regarding if and when we will move to tier 3.

No doubt the whole thing is complicated beyond belief BUT there should be much clearer / decisive communication and direction from the government.

Staff on minimum wage will be getting 2/3 or just over £5 an hour on this latest job support scheme that's replacing furlough. Minimum wage is just that the minimum required to survive.

Liverpool the ONLY city on tier 3. Honestly?

Ignoring the "Science" when the science advised a NATIONAL circuit break 3 weeks ago.

My two penneth is that this is set for the long term. I read an article saying the average life expectancy is 81 and the average Covid death age is 82. It is a very very tough decision to make i do understand that but everyone knows this and the day could arrive where shielding becomes self governing and everyone makes there own choices. Maybe new Covid Laws need to be applied to allow the nation to do that and the obvious rule breakers can be hit with more severe penalty.

This is one mighty mess and the problem is that the master plan is falling well short its time for a rethink and quickly.

The government will provide the funding, as they have done for other Tier 3 regions, and will do so for Gtr Manchester. You know that, Andy Burnham knows it too, but is asking for more than the other regions, proportionately

We all know what Whitty has warned, but already the transmission rate has started to decrease among the younger age groups. The additional measures within Tier 3 will add to that impetus which will - if compliance is maintained - translate into lower rates of transmission in the more vulnerable age groups. Whitty made his comments before it was known the younger-age transmission rate had started to fall

I'll bet Tod Road was never envisaged as the route out of this, though

Most transmission takes place in the home, then the workplace/schools and then hospitals. That is why it is so difficult to control with or without restrictions that have extremely limited impact.

A good negotiator would have come away with the best possible deal on the table, it looks like Burnham has come away with the worst deal possible, well done Andy B.

It can't be the worst possible deal unless Johnson punishes Greater Manchester by offering less support than Liverpool or Lancashire because Burnham didn't doff his cap correctly - surely Boris isn't that petulant?

Greater Manchester will get the same population adjusted suppport as the other regions in Tier 3. Everything else is posturing by both sides.

Why is it the worst deal possible when they can still discuss it further?

Because he's wasted the opportunity to get us into Tier 3 for several days - thus increasing transmission in his region - for absolutely nothing more than he'd have got by doing the same as Liverpool/Lancs

This very point was also made by Prof JVT tonight

That’s why I said “looks like” . I am indeed hoping talks can be resumed and a sensible deal struck.

I can't get involved in the infection rates gubbins but I do like the way central Government has been challenged in such a robust manner by a regional grunt.

Can we get shut of the Royals now please?

Meant the financial support aspects when mention was made of a deal on the table.

On the health side, what is stopping tier 3/other restrictions being imposed at the appropriate time when advised by the likes of Whitty/Van Tam, with a clear support package being in place that can then be further negotiated depending on local needs? All involved would know where they stand then.

Agree with that. There shouldn't be any need for individual regions to be "negotiating" on increased support packages. I'm not sure this was what was intended by either regional or central government, but it's where we are

Peston said that the last offer was taken away by Burnham to consult with local leaders, when he returned he was told there was no point in continuing by Jenrick. So talks break down over 5 million whilst the govt has spaffed billions on their mates for shit systems that don’t work. Nice one

Exactly James - Boris negotiates on the basis of what will get him liked, so he puts off the hard decisions until too late and then finds anyone else to blame.

You keep believing the propaganda , why would the govt remove the offer , like an even shitter game if deal or no deal. Accept our offer, which is less than we have given others,or we will impose a lockdown that will cripple businesses, and impoverish people. Why are non essential shops staying open if the situation is as dire as the govt says it is? . Many pubs in Manchester won’t survive this, many have already shut for good

Why not? That’s what was on the table yesterday apparently, but Burnham wanted £65 million after originally wanting £90 million.
0

Tier 2 / Tier 3 on 21:29 - Oct 20 with 1702 viewsroccydaleian

I’m believing the facts.
Copied from the BBC
Greater Manchester was offered £60m of central government to help support businesses under the new Tier 3 limits - but in a conversation with the prime minister, Mayor Andy Burnham suggested it was not possible to accept less than £65m.
Greater Manchester leaders originally submitted a request for £90m, which had been costed by a former Treasury official. On Tuesday morning they discussed £75m with government officials, which would have covered the period until the end of the financial year.
It's understood that Boris Johnson and Mr Burnham discussed a figure of £60m but were unable to agree. Ministers were reluctant to set a precedent of giving one region more, proportionately, than another, especially given ongoing talks with several other parts of the country which could also face tougher restrictions.
It is now not clear what financial support the region will receive. After 10 days of talks (of a kind) and billions spent during this crisis, it is quite something that the deal fell over down to a gap of £5m.
