Heading The Ball 09:18 - Jan 16 with 19741 viewsmingthemerciless

It's just been on the news that school children in Scotland under the age of 12 will be banned from heading the ball in training but not in actual games. Is this the start of heading the ball becoming outlawed ? What would the game look like without heading ?

As I said earlier I've headed the ball in the past and seen stars with the impact. That can't be good for the brain. I know the modern balls aren't as heavy but they still give you a jolt if the ball has traveled a fair distance.

I've also headed the old caseys and felt it. I can't ever recall seeing stars and we learned fast knew when to avoid repeating the experience. I also know the difference with the modern balls but your point is non the less valid.

Women get dementia in the same way that people who don’t smoke, drink or do drugs get cancer. There are many number of factors at play to determine someone’s predisposition to a certain disease. It’s the reason anecdotal evidence (‘my grandparents all smoked 50 cigarettes a day and none of them got lung cancer, so the link between smoking and lung cancer is a myth’) doesn’t work.

Nobody’s said that heading the ball is the one crucial cause of dementia, but what the studies do show is that it increases the risk of it, as well as other problems.

I haven’t done any research on this topic myself, what I said was that I’ve done enough research in my career and studies to know that when studies like these are published we can trust them.

Its not that difficult to know that Ming, Diddy Dave, myself and others are not spring chickens. Im surprised that you haven't worked that out I thought you were smarter than that.

I am, so in the interests of fairness I'll try to make it simpler for you.

"anybody over 50 is seen as ignorant dim or stupid by those under 40 who see themselves as enlightened and progressive."

How do you know who is over 50 and who is under 40?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Stop embarrassing yourself. You cannot use a randomised trial to study this type of population health question. There is no randomised trial of smoking cigarettes at least among humans.

I have no kids or grandkids but if I did I’d be happy for them to play footy and head the ball just as I did. But I am beginning to wonder how many years you’ve been heading a ball.

I like things simple so let me make it simple for you. When posters like myself, Diddy Dave, Ming D_A and others talk about watching big Reg it kinda indicates that we are not teenagers. Is that simple enough?

Dementia blatantly isn't solely linked to heading footballs which would explain why women still get the illness, but if the risk increases due to heading surely a wise idea would be to try and reduce those risks for everyone...

I'd take Shuns conclusions over yours every day of the week and it's funny how they fit in perfectly with other various independent studies linking the two, sorry I'm over 40 yet still listen to what qualified EXPERTS say, many apologies for that....you're priceless

I'm talking about your incorrect assumption about the views of people over 50/under 40 on this heading debate.

So again I'll ask how you came to that conclusion when you don't actually know the ages of all those contributing to that debate.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

He is smarter than that, that's probably why he struggles making sense of most of your points

Surely you're 'kinda' under 40 given your views on the matter?

You were doing so well with your first paragraph. I agree with every word then you reverted to type you obviously see denigrating people as vindication that you are right. I would love to carry on this enthralling conversation with you but I've found something better to do I'm just about to nail my nob to the floor and poke my eyes out.

So the words heading the ball dont appear in this summary of the study. The. authors did not attempt to measure how often or for how long former scottish professional footballers headed the ball. Nor do they make any claim about the dangers of heading the ball.
And if this study is used to claim playing professional football in Scotland causes dementia, we could also interpret from the same data and analysis that not being a professional footballer causes cancer!

These types of retrospective analyses provide interesting observations, not proof of causation, but it gives governments something to do and another reason to interfere in folks lives.

Thanks, or just stop posting as you've run out of ideas and realised none of your points actually stack up.

Will having your nob nailed to the floor increase the chance of you posting something remotely accurate, it can't possibly be detrimental

Probably not the best thing to say given the issues in New South Wales, but if it makes you feel better, go ahead.

Being embarrassed isn't in my nature

You said no research had been done on youngsters heading the ball, but there's plenty of research on the formative years of the skull and the brain. Yes, i've done plenty of heading (mainly of footballs) in my time but if you're implying that's had any effect on my ability to run rings round you, you've just used the very argument that you dismissed to try and make a point, and a very poor one at that

I'm not the one trying to use the lack of research with youngsters as a valid way of continuing allowing them to head a football - you are, so don't start getting smarmy over research methodology with me, or anyone else for that matter

So just to be clear, you accept that there is no evidence that young kids heading footballs causes dementia in later life

AND

Despite this lack of any evidence, you believe kids should be stopped from heading the ball in kids football

quick yes or no would be adequate.
