Calamity Lumley 18:47 - Dec 29 with 12580 views | Ralf85 | 10 outfielders playing their socks off again today. 1-0 up we are in control of the game. Lumley's limited brain function switched off yet again. Catches ball and brain decides to drop it. Second half ball comes across the goal, Lumley could have done something, anything - maybe even move, but no. He went into statue mode again. I keep scratching my head to try and remember a worse goalkeeper than this. Maybe Tony Roberts, but that's it. If we get decent money for Eze in January, we must use it to buy a half decent keeper. Team morale must be under serious pressure knowing that he will let at least two goals in every game. How do you motivate a team that knows that the guy in goal is useless.
Calamity Lumley on 23:49 - Dec 29 with 2105 views | Ned_Kennedys | Unless he can cut out the regular major errors that almost always lead to goals than he will not make it at this level.
Calamity Lumley on 00:46 - Dec 30 with 2010 views | timcocking | There have been many errors now. I'm sad about it, but there seems no point in denying the obvious. I'm not sure i can remember Smithies doing anything like it even once? Deeply disappointing, we should have won the last four games now. Nothing to do but keep hoping our luck will change, another terrific game from us really. We looked in a different class.
Calamity Lumley on 06:50 - Dec 30 with 1937 views | Benny_the_Ball | Don't exaggerate and don't belittle who we are. QPR FC is a professional football club plying it's trade in a highly regarded league. Given the scale and frequency of Lumley's errors it's time for the manager to make a professional decision and drop him to the bench.
Calamity Lumley on 07:12 - Dec 30 with 1929 views | MelakaRanger | Absolutely. Many of our losses or should I say 'not wins' are not due to our opposition being a better team. Its not due to us being overrun or being outplayed (Ok there have been a few exceptions) No, most often we have been to architects of our own downfall. We either miss a variety of golden goal scoring opportunities or we gift the opposition a goal or two (or three) in most every game. And more often than not we do both. Now I am sure none of our players turn up and dont give a toss (Boswinger/Wright Phillips etc). I am sure they are determined not to make these mistakes again and again. But they are all regularly guilty to a more or lesser extent. Now we are half way through the season the team should all know one another and be able to work as a combined unit by now and I would have hoped that coaching should have eliminated most of our weaknesses. But the defensive weaknesses are still as bad as at the beginning of the season. Lumley has had some great matches but his disasterous ones far then in number. For whatever the reason he is just not good enough. And I'm not sure Kelly is too but its time to give him a good run to find out. All the while we have Lumley in goal the oppositon are pretty sure that he will give them one gift if they pester him enough.
Calamity Lumley on 10:33 - Dec 30 with 1754 views | francisbowles | I think this mistake was one waiting to happen. I'm pretty sure I have seen him stop balls in this manner before i.e. pushing them down to the ground but this time there was someone there to take the ball.
Calamity Lumley on 10:38 - Dec 30 with 1741 views | stevec | Oh well, Cardiff next. Let’s hope they’ve got a sh it keeper. Doh.
Calamity Lumley on 10:47 - Dec 30 with 1732 views | CaptainPugwash | Arrrrrrrr.... Trubble bein' his jittryness be rubbin' orf on a defence alreddy as mobile as the Exxon Valdez. Yo ho!
Calamity Lumley on 11:58 - Dec 30 with 1677 views | RblockPrior | For me Lumley is no where near as bad as people make out, yes he made a bad mistake yesterday but he is a young keeper who imo we should get behind and support when making a mistake.

Calamity Lumley on 12:03 - Dec 30 with 1672 views | daveB | I'm not going to defend him as that was piss poor yesterday but I think part of it was he was thinking of where to throw the ball before he had caught it and before he knew it the ball was in the net. Really poor from him and no real excuse for that. I thought he should have saved the 2nd one as well. He's not a terrible keeper but he's having a really poor season and needs to get back to basics, he's far too easy to score against at the moment.
Calamity Lumley on 12:05 - Dec 30 with 1671 views | daveB | I don't think we should go after him and try and ruin him but he's cost us goals and points against BristoL City, West Brom, Fulham, Forest and Hull. He also gifted Luton a goal in a game we were winning easily and ended up hanging on. It's not good enough and he will know that more than anyone else.
Calamity Lumley on 12:15 - Dec 30 with 1641 views | brad | we need to get an experinced keeper during the window......the team are losing confidence with him in goal....kellys not the answer....send lumley out on loan or sell him....to me hes finished at loftus road....hes costing us big time....
Calamity Lumley on 12:22 - Dec 30 with 1629 views | PhilmyRs | This. Lumley seems a decent guy and has attributes you’d want in a keeper (size, communication etc.) but he’s made far too many mistakes now for it to just be accepted. We can’t afford to just sit and wait for improvements to kick in, a goalkeeper is such a crucial position, they can’t play themselves into form. You have to give others a chance, especially when such poor goals are being gifted — he’s a professional, earning decent money, he will accept it for what it is if he’s dropped. When you compare how Ingram was treated at the time to how much support Lumley has received it does feel like he got quite a rough deal. Just because we’re currently sitting in a position in the table where a lot of us thought we’d finish and because we have a young side which includes a goalkeeper that’s come through our youth team, it shouldn’t disguise from the fact that if we’d had a keeper like a Smithies or just one that kept mistakes down to a minimum, we’d probably be sitting in the play-offs right now. In football you can have off days where you play poorly and still manage to scrape 3 points thanks to a good goalkeeper/defensive performance or you can have days where everything is quick incisive, sexy football but you still find a way to lose. At the moment we haven’t got a keeper (or a defence) that is helping towards getting those scrappy wins while we do have a keeper (on current form) that’s always a threat to turning a top team performance into a draw or defeat. That is a big concern which needs to be addressed.
Calamity Lumley on 12:44 - Dec 30 with 1586 views | WestbourneR | This is the most sensible post yet. Yes he has attributes - he's vocal and imposing (and a lot better than Matt Ingram) but he's also totally failed to progress as a player in the last two years and the rough edges aren't going away. He's not agile or co-ordinated enough to play at this level. He is simple doesn't have the skill set. The mistakes are born out of poor skills, it's a simple as that. We need to get someone better pronto. I thought Kelly was starting to look quite able before he got injured. Let's pray he is the real deal.

Calamity Lumley on 13:17 - Dec 30 with 1540 views | BrianMcCarthy | Lumley is far too young in goalkeeper years for us, for him or for the coaches to say with certainty what his career will be. His skills are reasonable and we have seen plenty evidence of that. Comparing him to Roberts and Bankole is laughable, to be fair. He is far, far better than either of those. At the moment, though, his form is erratic and Warburton will surely think long and hard about recalling the fit-again Kelly. The positive is that Lumley seems to have far more gumption than some of his team-mates and many of the crowd, who abandoned all hope and belief and decided that we were done when we conceded an equaliser on 32 minutes.

Calamity Lumley on 13:47 - Dec 30 with 1492 views | R_from_afar | I would let him play in the next game but drop him after that if he makes a bad mistake in the next match. Kelly is not exactly Smithies mark 2 so we need to manage both of them carefully. Lumley will be more aware than anyone of what a gaffe he made. Dropping him now will not help him, players don't perform well if they think that one error will mean they are dropped. I also don't see how Lumley can be blamed for the second. He can't stand any further forward or he will be stuck in and impeded by a crowd of players. Our outfield players needed to impose themselves and deal with the cross.
| "Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1." |

Calamity Lumley on 13:50 - Dec 30 with 1477 views | jonno | Exactly. Lumley is not a poor keeper. In fact, he is probably at around the level of the rest of the side. But, as I"ve said on here before, he will never be a great keeper. If he was going to be, then he would already be a lot better than he is now.
Calamity Lumley on 14:08 - Dec 30 with 1456 views | Gloucs_R | 4 pages on two separate threads tells you everything. A good keeper gets you 10 extra points a year, a bad one loses you 10. He's the latter at the moment.

Calamity Lumley on 14:21 - Dec 30 with 1432 views | Ned_Kennedys | This makes no sense at all: why wait for the next mistake? He's made at least half a dozen errors that have cost us points plus half a dozen more we have got away with so its hardly dropping him after 'one error'. Kelly is fit and should be in the team on Wednesday.
Calamity Lumley on 14:52 - Dec 30 with 1391 views | ngbqpr | As I just wrote in the comments section for Clive's report... 'Keeper is a position where it is generally accepted you improve with age - we've managed to get ourselves into a position where we have 6 on the books but 5 are 24 or under...and the other is (a) only 25 and (b) out on loan. Yes Smithies on loan would of course be the ideal solution but can we justify that many GK wages? Suspect Kelly will be in on Weds - if not, I have a horrible feeling Joe will be listening to a section of the crowd serenading the keeper on the opposition's bench...

Calamity Lumley on 15:06 - Dec 30 with 1369 views | PinnerPaul | Agree to an extent but outfield players make mistakes all the time - ball given away cheaply yesterday by every player. Hughill didn't track his man, Manning didn't do enough to prevent cross, Ball committed the needless foul for the fk etc etc etc GKs errors are always highlighted - they all make them - DeGea practically threw one in the net a few weeks back. Having said all that, GKs still have to earn place in the team - time for Kelly again I think.
Calamity Lumley on 15:08 - Dec 30 with 1366 views | PinnerPaul | He won't be able to save many sitting on the bench!
Calamity Lumley on 16:06 - Dec 30 with 1311 views | PhilmyRs | You view goalkeepers and outfield players differently though don’t you. A goalkeeper is a very specialised position where the most important job is not to make any major howlers. On Saturday, Lumley (not for the first time), gifted the opposition a needless goal. Regardless of how poor aspects of the team’s performance were, that should never have happened. You can’t compare a sloppy foul or a misplaced pass to a keeper dropping the ball at the feet of an opposition player and allowing a tap in. It’s the equivalent of a centre back blindly passing the ball to the opposition striker to allow him a tap in or one of our strikers missing an open goal — which I know we’re good at as well! If Lumley hadn’t done that mistake, I’m pretty confident we would have won that game and put in a much better second half. I will say as critical as I’m being of Lumley, I think Wells deserved just as much the other week for the gilt edged chances he missed, that’s equally as bad in my book. Goalkeepers are so important, any mistake is rightfully debated at length because it impacts on the whole team — you can recover from a misplaced pass or a silly foul but recovering from a needles, ‘given to them’ goal is so much harder. It was the same argument after West Brom at home, the first goal is the most important, game was even, looked like it was heading for a draw, then Lumley’s poor positioning allowed a testing but one he should save shot go in. After that we played some poor stuff and Lumley pulled off some worldy saves, but the damage was done. We wouldn’t have chased the game, the gameplan would have remained intact and more than likely we would have got something from the match etc. I’m all for criticising the team when they perform poorly, it’s a forum after all, but trying to collectively distribute blame rather than, as harsh is, accept that on Saturday (and other games this season) the keeper was the key reason we dropped points, seems to me like people being too nice on Lumley.
Calamity Lumley on 16:16 - Dec 30 with 1291 views | BazzaInTheLoft | Not really the mugging off you think it is. Smithies can’t get off the bench at Cardiff. Etheridge started yesterday.
Calamity Lumley on 16:46 - Dec 30 with 1253 views | Benny_the_Ball | How many mistakes a season do you suggest we support? 20? 50? 100? Lumley is not as young or inexperienced as you think. He's 24 and has 113 senior appearances under his belt so these mistakes should be less frequent. We can 'support' the lad by dropping him to the bench and improving him for the future.
Calamity Lumley on 18:47 - Dec 30 with 1199 views | stevec | I’m fully aware of that. As I am the irony of a top keeper being permanently benched whilst Lumley is still first choice at this madhouse. They’ll be non league keepers doing a five day week painting and decorating watching our man and wondering how the fck they’re not playing full time in the Championship. I’ve witnessed as far back as Alan Spratley in all his glory and can assure you Lumley should not be playing at this level.
