The future is cancelled for the time being. What makes anyone think that the Tories will do anything for the areas like Heywood in the future when they've done nothing for them in the last nine years ? Another lost decade coming up after the last one.
Good luck with holding on to Scotland now. They'll be gone in five years.

But Jess Phillips is a Remainer too and, according to the posters on here who are pleased with the GE result, the one thing guaranteed to put off the ex-Labour heartlands is more lefty policies from a loud, confident women who supports gay rights etc
Stfu. I worked on Piccadilly train station for 2 years from 17-19, I saw real poverty whilst working on that station people who didn't know where their next meal was coming from and thought committing crime and getting nicked would be a better option than what they currently have, how sad is that?
Who gives a f**k who's on telly, there is real poverty all over the UK, especially in big cities. Whilst there are people going hungry, homeless and can't make ends meet, I'll always be a socialist as long as this is happening.

Let them go. I can't see it making one bit of difference to the rest of the UK if they did other than we might need a passport to get there if we want to go.

Jess Phillips is in the more central part of labour than left wing, however this could now work given the left wing rank of labour which JC has built since taking leadership who could help keep the balance..

No idea how old you are now but I was living in central Manchester until earlier this year. You’re right that the homelessness and poverty there is stark and it’s very real. You don’t sleep in manky sleeping bags in shop fronts in sub zero temps in the pissing down rain to con change out of passers by. It’s stating the obvious that a lot of homeless people have addiction issues. Much in the same way a lot of people with homes and jobs they don’t like will also drink and take drugs to excess. Christ, I think I’d start drinking again if was out on the street. What strikes me when I visit Rochdale is the number of beggars. Ok it’s not the same level as a city like Manchester and Rochdale has always been a poorer run down town as far as I can remember but I never recall beggars when I was growing up. It’s the same story in every single town and city though, Dale isn’t unique.

I'm 27. So not that long ago, but obviously I'm still in touch with former colleagues at the station despite moving on in network rail and the homeless issue is still as bad as any.
I actually had a tory supporter try to defend their position to me by saying "you've lived comfortable the last 9 years under tory government, why would you vote elsewhere". Are people really that self-absorbed?

You mean like the " moderate, inconsequental policies " that the Johnson gang will be putting into practice ? This is the most right wing government in my lifetime. They're to the right of any Thatcher government. Don't believe me - look at the people in the Cabinet now and then look at the ones that have just left !

As a society most of our households are vulnerable and only losing their job away from ending up in dire straights with all the household and personal debt and monthly outgoings. I’d lay blame on a lack of financial education and budgeting skills in the school curriculum. Couple that with Rent/mortgages and other essential expenditure eating a big chunk of people’s income and there’s bound to be strain when shit happens. Too many people buy useless shite on credit. Most people don’t have enough savings.
The biggy for me though is a lack of mental health support. Most of the people I’ve encountered who are or have been homeless have mental health issues. Unchecked these lead to worsened addiction problems , eventual job losses or just stop the sufferer leading a conventional lifestyle. Life spirals our of control and folk fall through the cracks of the systems that are supposed to protect them.

A few weeks back I saw a bloke had been sleeping rough in that bus stop on Whitehall St opposite the Infirmary main entrance. I mentioned this to my wife and she said she used to work with him. He was a teacher previously. I found out today the poor bloke has died. He was about 50 I believe.

well said, me too but I'm at the other end of life from you and it hasn't happened yet; as someone once said, you'll never sell socialism to the English. Question is do we want a Labour Party to fight that battle or one that wins the odd election by being an imitation of the LIbDems?
Somebody once said " The Labour Party Is A Crusade Or It's Nothing ". Too many times they got in power and forgotten that. They've morphed into a Tory Lite party and then been voted out. It'll happen again when Johnson and his cronies eventually over step the mark.

My mother in law works for Manchester City council and it’s her job to count the rough sleepers. That’s right folks count them. Count them so a labour council and mayor can claim funding for them. I wonder how much of this funding is dripping down to homeless folk. Also all of the new apartment blocks in town that are being built must also have a percentage of “affordable housing” built on site but the crook of a mayor is fine with the building firms promising to build affordable housing units away from the city centre. Which isn’t happening.
