Am I the only one? 17:00 - Dec 20 with 5672 viewsDanielswan

... who thinks we had a crap game? We did produce more than Hull, but to be honest, they were even more crappy than us.

Penalty in the end though in my oppinion, good thing we finally got some deserved luck.

Was impressed by Ki and Fabianski, Bony proved he will be forever missed if he goes anywhere. The two central defenders also did well.

Jaz failed miserably in every aspect of the game, Dyer and Routlegde both very anonymous and Jonjo was a hit and miss, he failed very simple passes and yet provided a constant threat, should have scored at least once.

Nice win though, going very happy to bed tonight.

I don't care if we win ugly either. If we do, I don't have a problem saying we have.

What I don't get is people saying how well we have played after games like that and equally, people saying we have played badly just because we lost, regardless of performance.

Agree.

We didn't play crap, but didn't play as well as last week. At the end of the day, the result is all that matters.

I disagree with this Rose tinted sh it .

We were absolutely appalling today .
To play so well against spurs then put a lacklustre display yet again away from home just doesn't make sense.

Good job we played that shower of shit today !

We made 7 changes from the team that played Spurs.

We didn't play well, but we still far more threatening than Hull.

You have no understanding of the British game. Every single game is difficult and a battle.

Give the guy some credit, he presumably started following the Swans with Laudrup, but has stuck around because he enjoys supporting the club. He could have easily disappeared and started following whoever ML manages now.

Not a lot wrong with what he said for me, it wasn't a great game, both teams were poor but we were the better of the two.

To get a win on the road with key players missing is fantastic, regardless of how it is achieved.

The result has left a warm glow for the whole weekend. However, let us just say that this was the last game on MoTD - right where I expected to see it - for a reason.

Tom you 1 of my fav posters on here but you watched a different game to me today.

Not at our best maybe ...... 'appalling' no way.

3 points away from home a clean sheet, with a little bit of luck we could (should) of won that game 3-0.

Bring on the Villa.

I Agree. Not a classic performance with just one deflected goal. It was a good MOTD however and even our game had quite a few incidents with the woodwork being hit 3 times.
This was never going to be an easy match as Hull were desperate for points to end their bad run. It could have been much easier had we taken our chances but a vey good 3 points nevertheless.

I'm quite surprised at some of the negative comments on this thread about our performance yesterday. I was actually there, and I came away thinking that it was a pretty solid display given that Monk made seven changes in the name of squad rotation over the Christmas period. We could and should have wrapped the game up well before the end, but our continuing failure to put away excellent chances is a cause for concern. Not as much of a cause for concern as not making any chances at all, though (ask Steve Bruce). The defence and keeper were superb and coped with virtually everything Hull threw at them.

My player ratings:

Fab (8) - what a superb acquisition this guy is, as a poster said earlier, Arsenal must be bonkers to let him go. He only had one or two non routine saves to make, and he made them, but he had to cope with an increasing aerial bombardment in the last 30 minutes as Hull reverted to hoof ball. No problems at all, his handling under the high ball is textbook.

Taylor (7) - his form is improving gradually with every game, this was a competent and solid full back display. And congratulations, it's not often you see a foul throw given for not taking it in the right place.

Williams (8) - a real captain's performance in central defence, hard and gritty, no nonsense, put it in row Z when you have to. If he was 25, he'd be worth £25 million of a top club's money.

Fernandez (7) - given his long lay off, he looked composed and strong; we are so blessed in the centre back department.

Richards (6.5) - smart bit of man management by Monk, dropping him would have crushed the lad after his late mistake against Spurs. Didn't do anything spectacular and looked a bit shakey at times but no disasters.

Ki (8.5) - my MOTM, he is a joy to watch these days. So composed on the ball, hardly ever gives possession away and now with a hard edge to his game.

Carroll (7) - neat and tidy, worked hard to make himself available. I'd like to see him do more in the final third, as in actually get forward pose a goal threat now and again, but does he have that in his locker?

Shelvey (7) - he definitely is an enigma, enfuriating and exhilarating in equal measure. His distribution was good, he looked more comfortable in the advanced midfield role where he could get the odd shot away, and his corner taking was good. On the negative side, he appeared to be strolling at certain times when his colleagues were busting a gut to get back and defend. His free kick into row Z in the second half was highly embarrassing. But our goal resulted from his shot which looked to be going wide until the enormous stroke of luck with the wicked dflection off Ki (who says we don't get the rub of the green). Two minutes later he was desperately unlucky to hit the post with a far better snap shot from outside the area. And he really should have done better with the gilt edged chance half way through the second half - I know he hit the target, but a free shot from 12 yards out should have been put wide of the keeper.

Dyer (7) - definitely ring rusty, but this run out will have done him the world of good. He miscued or slipped once or twice when in good positions, but also worked hard and made some good piercing runs, espcially in the second half when he linked up with his old buddy Rangel.

Routs (7) - more consistent than of late, got through a lot of unspectactular but essential donkey work. His efforts in and around their penalty area could have been better, particularly in the first ten minutes, when a Williams lump forward found him breaking away with only one defender in attendance. Routs just outpaced him, but was forced a little wide and he sliced his shot from close range, embarrasingly missing the target by a good five yards.

Gomis (7.5) - the thing that has surprised me is how much of a willing worker this guy is, and how much energy he has. He never stopped running and battling, often ploughing a lone furrow up front, but he put himself about all afternoon. Unlucky not to score in the second half, when he miscued from a lovely cross, only to see the ball ricochet off defender Al Hamady and trickle towards the post, bouncing off it and rolling agonisingly away.

Subs:

Emnes (6.5) - a lively little cameo, put in two or three good bursts forward late on.

Rangel (6.5) - not on long enough to make a huge impression, but coped well with Hull's pace on the left and linked up nicely with Dyer once or twice.

Wilf (7) - as a Hull central defender, not the guy you want to see come on with 15 minutes left. He battered the Hull big men and held the ball up well. Could have fed Dyer in the closing stages for a free run in on goal but didn't, prefering to take a shot from outsde the area himself. Only one thing on Wilf's mind, get on that scoresheet!

So, lots of positives to take, including a very solid defensive display, plenty of chances created and everyone putting in at least a reasonable perfornace despite seven changes to team line up. Villa will pose a much stiffer test (I've no doubt Agbonlahor will have his red card rescinded), but hopefully we''ll see Siggy and Montero back in contention.

Hull tried hard and were very physical up front, but do appear to be very short of ideas and confidence. Where's the inspiration, as a disguntled Hull fan next to me said on the bus back to the town centre after the game. They need their missing key players back rapidly, or it might be 'Goodnight Irene' for the Tigers.

And to the Swans fans who started chanting "Steve Bruce looks like my Nan", I salute you for the comedy moment of the afternoon!

Excellent summary .... Watched the game in the pub, but agree with your player ratings/ comments although Id probably give Fernandez a 8 as well.

I don't think we were at out best we started really poor just like the west ham game but we got the first goal some how with a bit of luck, and we did look better then hull but hull played pretty poor. I'm still happy that we were able to win even know that we weren't at our best.

A few words in defence of Shelvey who gets a fair bit of stick on this forum. No he's not a top-top player - if he was he wouldn't be with us. And yes he should have scored from Carroll's peach of a cross, but give the 'keeper some credit for a great stop. And yes his free kick was woeful.

But, he did score the only goal which won the match (yes I know technically it was Ki's) and he is the only Swan who can shoot from the edge of the penalty box without either hitting the corner flag or landing in row ZZ. We saw plenty of that in the Spurs game. In fact he was unlucky with a second low shot that rebounded off the post. And he always looks like he wants to score - he gets into positions where he can try a shot. Others seem happy to lay it off.

On that basis alone, he is worth his place. I'm a fan.
