Quote from Chris Wilder on Sheff Utd website says signing Holding “is the last remaining piece of the jigsaw” which suggests they have signed him instead of Dunne.

Gutted, we should have sold him.

perhaps im in the minority here, but im actually pretty gutted if we dont sell dunne

love him and hes one of my favorites on the team, but we always fall into this trap. whereas brentford and brighton sell at the highest point, we continue to hold onto players in the hope of some mythical playoff push- we didnt sell jcs last year at the peak of his powers (coming off a healthy season) and now his value is back in the gutter after another injury filled season. weve done the same with willock, bright, manning, etc etc. other than freeman and eze, we always seem to sell too late or let these guys go for free

ok, dunne is miles better than ashby. but we're in 14th. does anyone realistically think we're going to leapfrog 8 teams and end up in 6th? we're also not going down

we couldve scraped by this year with ashby and edwards at rightback, taken the few million we wouldve gotten for dunne and used that for multiple new players next year

instead, its the same old story

Not if the fella signs a new contract now.

Sheffield U are 2nd. I doubt they want to be this years Leeds Utd.
Currently they have good competition with said Leeds U and even Sunderland who are bringing Jayden Danns. So, as I see it Dunne maybe THE piece of the puzzle they need, NOT a guy who has virtually no competitive games in eons.

For the Hoops, we could get a younger dedicated RB. Or best case, Dunne is energized and steps up his game.

So clearly Sheff Utd will not pay what we want. We are now stuck with a player who won’t sign a new contract and will now leave for free in the summer. We then have to get a replacement in which will cost us I’m sure. If Dunne didn’t want to sign the contract we offered him then we should have taken what we could for him. Now let him rot in the ressies. If he doesn’t want to play for us then he can train with the likes of Taylor-Richards for the rest of the season.

That seems a bit of a leap, how do we know Dunne now won't sign a contract?
All that has happened is a club have bid for him and we turned it down.
So much noise and bullshit around all this

This isn't a totally stupid POV, but the real issue is poor contract management. If we sell Dunne now we may be getting the best price for him that we can expect, but it's still going to be low relative to his worth to the club. I don't think we're looking at a sale now that will fund "multiple" players next year, I think we're looking at roughly the price of one Madsen.

(OK I know Madsen has been exceptionally poor value, but my point is that when 2-3m counts as a big outlay, you are always going to be taking a risk. It's either one Madsen or 2-3 Saitos and Hevertons, either way you aren't going to be rebuilding a team on that even if the deals are on balance decent; you need things like Morgan, where a guy you signed for peanuts turns out to be a mainstay of the team.)

We ought to have had Dunne under a serious length of contract, so that we can play hardball when it comes to sale negotiations. TBF to the club, it really would have needed them to get the contract sorted relatively soon after his move to RB, when his true value to us became apparent.

There’s a lot I agree with here, particularly the point about JCS, but I think a factor not considered is Sheff utd’s various offers were not £2m, they were a small amount up front and then add ons based on stuff like winning promotion, making Prem apps, playing international football. So if we’ve just turned down 2m for an out of contract player that’s dim. But if it’s only a few hundred K he’s probably worth more to us Alive than dead and might choose to extend his contract.

If Sheff Utd’s interest has ended now, who thinks we’re now going to extend Dunne on a confidential 4 year deal?

Failing to extend Dunne having turned down decent money for him only to see him walk on a free is going to look pretty stupid.

I wouldn’t be surprised any extension will now cost us more in wages too. Holding is only on loan, so Sheff Utd could choose to just sign Dunne on a free now in the summer.

Agreed. Now its vital we get a deal that he can sign. If it includes exit clauses, so what.

I really hope he does extend his contract now.

I just think the club have messed this up. If the only issue holding up the extension was 3 or 4 years we should have got it done and then could have negotiated now or in the summer with a strong hand. 31 is not over the hill for a defender; he would still most likely have been useful then, in the event you never actually sold him.

Now, unless Dunne’s agent is an idiot, which I highly doubt, we will almost certainly have to pay more to extend him than we would have one month ago, and it’ll need to be his length of contract.

Oh, and Nourry also has given himself a problem. If Dunne doesn’t sign the extension and is clear he’ll walk in the summer, do we stick in the reserves to make a point to other players? Are we consistent in approach *cough, Kolli* or do we have one rule for Dunne than we might for others?

I'm glad he's still here If only until the Summer.

Between now and the Summer break work and talk between him and the club can continue.

We've already been inconsistent by playing Dunne, surely?
He was as 'out of contract in the summer' at the start of the season as he is now.

Agree - in fact I raised very similar points 7 pages ago. We need to follow the 'model' at ALL times even (especially) with popular players. It's has to be about the club not the player.

There is no way we were going to turn down 2million, it must have been as you say small fee up front and add ons which makes sense for them but does nothing for us.

Much Like JCS, if a good offer was on the table we'd have sold him.

This was always one of those deals where if we sell for that fee great everyone wins and if we don't thats a pretty good outcome for us as well.

Not if the line (and truth) was that contract negotiations were ongoing and in good faith.

As I have said, I think it was more us than him as to why he hadn’t re-signed.
