The main opposition leader in Russia was Alexei Navalny. He had quite a large popular appeal and held a few demonstrations. He was poisoned in Russian and flew to Germany for treatment. He returned to Russian unwisely and was arrested and sent to a prison in the Arctic area. He died in captivity. Some believe he was murdered to prevent a prisoner swap that happened recently. Other believe he could not survive the prison after his poisoning.
Russia swapped convicted hitman Videm Krasikov (who murdered a Georgian born Chechen separatist in Germany) and a few others, for US journalists and a Russian activist journalist who also returned to Russian and who was also jailed on his return.
