Should we sack Russ on 21:54 - Aug 6 by Dr_Parnassus

“ I am starting to lose faith in what he is trying to do. The theory behind it makes sense, trying to pass the ball at speed, tire the other team out and then put it away when their fitness goes is a sound one “

That is not a sound theory at all. It’s the most negative version of football you could ever think of. Condensing a 90 minute game into a 20 minute one in the faint hope that they will be tired at the end is the epitome of a manager who doesn’t know how to win a game and is devoid of any reality.

Those are the tactics given to a group of inferior kids who don’t have the ability to take on their counterparts.

“Guess what… they will eventually stop running” is the sentence that sums up his managerial ability and will haunt him in the same way Bob Bradley said “P.K.”.

Well they didn’t stop running today, and they didn’t last week…. And they didn’t last season.

Who is this unfit team we are hoping to come up against exactly? I’ve not seen them yet, let alone a league full of them.

Very difficult to argue with that after today.

If theres the chance that the opposition do eventually tire they are already 2/3 goals ahead.

Take a look at our goals conceded in 2020/21 compared to last season - almost 30 more league goal conceded in 2021/22. A shocking stat.

Yep that was my next point.

The method used to tire the opponents out is to knock it around our own box for 70 mins. That isn’t a question of IF it goes wrong, it’s WHEN.

So his game plan is to keep the score down until the last part of the game where he hopes we are still in touch to then peg it back at the end.

I’ve never heard a more ludicrous game plan from a professional manager in all my life.

Get David Wagner in. Out of work, Winter knows him. Got Huddersfield up, knows the league.

The problem is that we aren't losing games, we are giving them away.
The tactics bring about enough errors, teams just let us follow our game plan.
We have a top six side, with bottom four game plan

If Marsh and Winter sacked Martin tomorrow - who would replace him (being realistic)?

We'd do better with Sarina Wiegman than this buffoon. Jane Ludlow!

Or as already suggested, Wagner.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

They were for the most part 11 men in their own half.
So we were not under threat except for their three breakaway.
Most of the game was played around the halfway line and in their half.
The failure of our players to turn that possession into anything meaningful was shocking.

By design yes.

If you go back 12 months you will see me stating that this is the exact tactic opposition managers will use as they notice that we don’t play expansive football and just look to keep it.

2 weeks later it became the go-to tactic to play us. It’s not rocket science.

If it’s players creating things that tickle your fancy, then a manager that tells his players to knock the ball around in their own half for most of the game really isn’t for you.

hang on, we weren't under threat except for the 3 times they scored? It was their game plan, Tomasson has said as much, they defended and waited knowing chances would come.

Blackburn had a game plan, their team was set up to play it and the team was picked based on that plan.

On the other hand we have a gameplan we don't have the players to carry out and a manger dumb enough to shoehorn players in (ou of position) who simply cause us problems, they don't cause the oppo any mind.

if what I watched today was genuinely a great effort by our team we are in bigger troubel than I thought when their third went in.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

This has always been my point when others have stated we “dominated the game”.

We dominate nothing. It’s in both teams game plan for us to have the ball. It’s not something we earn in a battle of two teams wanting the ball, we are the only team playing that game.

Opposition managers dominate the game without the ball. They want us to have it.

You don’t have to have the ball to dominate the game.

JDT mirrors my exact comments here:

“Clean sheets are also very important and we followed the game plan. We controlled the game out of possession against a good side on the ball.”

Just questioning your view that we played it around our own area.
We didn't.
The fact that playing it back and fore around the halfway line achieving nothing, and just allowing them to jump on their few opportunities is different but in essence no better than the times last season when it went wrong.
Except today it seemed like most of the 90 mins was played in or around their half, which made today's result more shocking

Our area is determined by how the opposition set up. It doesn’t have to mean our own penalty box.

If a team comes to condense the pitch and put players behind the ball, our area expands from our own third to probably our own half, maybe just in front.

They are more than happy for us to have the ball in and around those areas as they are confident we can’t hurt them with such a slow and predictable tactic (and they were right).

They are also happy to allow us to play tippy tappy to nowhere, knowing that eventually mistakes will inevitably be made and they can pounce (and they were right again).

This has been the case pretty much his whole time here, it’s just only now people seem to be waking up to it.

In reality though, can we afford to do it ? Struggling to buy players. How would they finance it ? Not sure how long his contract is

Or, can we afford not to? What if he's leading us to relegation? Wouldn't that be a bigger disaster?

What if this schitts show means players are desperate to leave come january? And now, given that so many fans have turned against him and the showing on the pitch is so poor, how many of those players who were keen to come here still are keen? Though to be honest that particular soundbite seems like total BS right now.

I'd have Guidolin back.
Zoran Mamic is unattached as is Jorge Sampaoli (why not?)

The problem we have is, if players who Martin has brought in can’t play his style and he can’t coach these players to achieve it there is no way we will be successful.
The style is fine with the right players and coach.
Silverstein was at the game … not a good sign for Martin I think.

Depends very much as to whether there’s any transfer pot. Would we want him to buy players to play this style only to find out they are like the rest of the team.

It won’t happen but I’d rather him go now than wait.

Let’s not fool ourselves that he’s only had 2 games. He’s had a season and a pre-season and nothing fills me with any confidence at all. He’s had all the time in the world and we’re going nowhere. Well, apart from in the wrong direction probably.
