Things you don’t see any more #14,286 on 20:45 - Jun 21 by colinallcars | Something else rarely seen these days are winkles. The pins mentioned by the OP would come in handy for these. Now that the winkle stall outside the Beehive in Brentford has sadly gone, I don't know anywhere in West London where winkles, whelks etc can be found. |
They still sell them in Shepherds Bush Market, or at least they did two years ago when I moved out. [Post edited 22 Jun 2018 0:57]

I've got an electric knife and very useful it can be too. Do jokey socks count (I have a drawful of unused ones received as presents)?

Things you don’t see any more #14,286 on 08:33 - Jun 21 by Metallica_Hoop | In Fleet Street people queue very British-like at the bus stop opposite my office. Even the tourists. Its the bus stop by Zest and Ley. |
And when I was at school from the late 60s onwards, it was like hand-to-hand combat when buses arrived (almost always instigated by people over a "certain age" --- and usually older women) and the kids and young blokes lost out every time. Probably because we'd been taught "proper" behaviour while the old folk were cynical. pragmatic and ultimately totally selfish (unless it was relevant to their grandchildren I suppose?). So --- so much for genrealisations?

Things you don’t see any more #14,286 on 10:14 - Jun 21 by johncharles | Eating bones. Years ago everyone gave their dogs bones but in the last 20/30 years it’s reckoned not to be a good idea. Bones, especially chicken bones can splinter and cause all sorts of internal injuries. P.S. much fewer proper Butchers shops about, old fashioned ones that always had bones for your dog. My last dog died from a punctured bowel after a raw knucklebone splintered and compacted in his gut. Vet said it should be never, never, NEVER give dogs bones. Chicken bones, cooked or otherwise can splinter very dangerously. And slightly related ---- You used to be able to go to the butchers or fishmongers and get bones etc for stock-making. Now fishmongers are very rare and the last time I asked in my butchers I was told that their chain had a contract with a restaurant chain and absolutely everything not sold went to them. I remember the rag and bone man when I lived in Hounslow in the late 70s. He had the whole Steptoe set up with a horse and everything. Living in Dorset, the horses I see these days are usually piloted by some chinless Rupert trying to eradicate a fox.

I used to sell those in Jean Junction Oxford Street. The girls always wanted a size 8 or 10 even when they were on the large size. The fun we had trying to squeeze them into them. To be able to get the zip up you had to put your hand around the crotch to be able to set the zipper straight copped a lot of feelies and a few right handers I know disgraceful behaviour but I pulled loads especially girls on holiday. The best make was called Made In Heaven it certainly was Oh the 70's, tight Jeans, platforms, girls black moroccan, Marlborough and Stanley Bowles

We had an onion man in Hammersmith in the 60s and he really was French. Plus a knife sharpening man on a trike, Price and co bread which was sold from a horse-drawn wagon. And amazingly, in the White City flats, a man would come round doing a song and dance act in the courtyards. People would throw a few bob from their balconies. Modern Britain is characterless in comparison.

I used to travel to school in Central London by train from Bromley South. I could only remain seated until Shortlands or Beckenham Junction when I was obliged to give up my seat to an adult. Now I'm 70 and an adult, no-one even thinks of offering up their seat - this is possibly because I look so fit and agile?
