Southampton Linked With Dundee United Keeper
Monday, 10th Jan 2022 11:26

According to the Scottish Media who to be honest are not the most accurate when it comes to Saints, we are chasing a goalkeeper from Dundee United with Rangers also in the hunt.

Saints have a decent record in signing goalkeepers from Scottish clubs, Eric Martin who made 289 appearances between 1966 and 1975 joined us from Dunfermline Athletic.

Then of course Antti Niemi was signed from Hearts back in 2002 and then Fraser Forster joined us from Celtic in 2014.

This time we are being linked with Dundee United's Swiss born keeper Benjamin Siegrist.

Although he started his career in his homeland, he moved to Aston Villa in 2009 aged 17 and aside from a brief spell back in Switzerland has played all his professional career either in England or Scotland.

His career isn't exactly glittering though, he never made an appearance for Villa and only made a handful of loan appearances out on loan in the lower leagues, he then joined Vaduz in his home country in 2016 but was not always first choice there before joining Dundee United in 2018.

He established himself there in the Scottish Championship and they were promoted in 2020. He made 131 saves in Premiership matches during the 2020—21 season, the most of any goalkeeper in the league, and won the club's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards, despite missing the end of the season with a broken wrist. In June 2021, United rejected an official bid to buy Siegrist from English League One club Ipswich Town.

Internationally although he has played for the Swiss U21 side he does not appear to have even been picked for the full squad, let alone be capped.

Now it is said Glasgow Rangers are ready to make him their number one keeper next season, so is he really on Saints radar ?

I would say not, he has only a season and a bit in the Scottish Premier League to his name in top flight football and he will turn 30 in a few weeks time.

I think this one is his agent trying to push up his wages in the negotiations with Rangers, so this one is a non starter for me.

Definitely need a new number one, although I was hoping that we’d be going for that young English, West Brom keeper as he looked really promising and looked already decent enough, but still if this keepers any good, then he’ll do what our current ones can’t do and come out, actually distribute the ball to our own players, not make some real bad mess ups etc, still it’ll certainly be interesting to see if what happens

And those of us with too many years on the planet to bother counting will remember, and add to the list, Campbell Forsyth who joined us back in 1965/66 from Kilmarnock.
As for Benjamin Siegrist, I really don't think he'll be signing a contract any time soon, well not in Southampton anyway.

Difficult this one. Not sure if we could consider him as a possibility, as he has had relatively few games for someone of his age , but seems to have D.A.J for Dundee United, as they got promotion to SPL last season. Saints have had a large selection of " foreign players " on the books since the late 70's but " the late" master Jankewitz - is the only one who comes to mind.

Don't know if he's first choice a.t.m (but United have lost their last 5 games ) but don't know if he's been responsible for that debacle. Certainly we'll need some new faces in the goalie squads next season - as it stands - all our 4 goalies will be OOC in June.

Like highfield49 (above) , I remember Campbell Forsyth very well. A great character who ruled the roost, and didn't like having defenders " cluttering up his penalty area", and often waved them away upfield - with a few choice Scottish expressions.

Of course, one can go back EVEN further looking for Scottish "guardians" , in the post war era, we had Scottish international Ian Black at the club for a couple of seasons.

I’m another one old enough to remember Campbell Forsyth, I was at the game against Liverpool when he broke his leg. Nobody has mentioned our most recent goalkeeping acquisition from Scotland. Fraser Forster.
