Swansea City Christmas Report

....which sees us top of the pile as Swans fans delve into their stockings and get stuck into Christmas lunch.

10/10

Lee Trundle - The perfect 10! 17 goals, the top return in English football cannot be faulted; neither can the style that they were taken in. His 2nd against Yeovil was an absolute stunner, which would be played endless times on TV if it had come from the boot of the likes of Lampard or Rooney. He also memorably displayed his tactical nous in shepherding the ball into the net from an offside position against Blackpool. We have also been treated to the usual montage of trickery and his recent 4 game drought was surely designed by Kenny to put off potential January bidders. Stay and fire us to the Championship Lee!

9/10

Leon Britton - Leon has developed into the talented player we only saw glimpses of last season. Whilst Trundle is so heavily marked space has been opened up for Leon to demonstrate his creativity and dribbling skills. More goals would be nice especially if they are of the standard of his effort against Bristol City, but for now Leon has his new position on the right of midfield fully under control.

Roberto Martinez - El Capitan has pulled all the strings in the midfield so far for the Swans. The step up to League 1 level has rejuvenated him and his slick passing game, as I believe, has the move from the Vetch to White Rock. A great ambassador for the club with his media work Roberto can become a Swansea legend.

Alan Tate - Few would have predicted this one at the start of the season, but the former Manchester United man has slotted in well at right back and overcome his critics to play a key role for Swansea. He is still prone to errors with Rotherham and Doncaster springing to mind, but on the whole he has been our most solid defender and has supported attacks well down the right flank.

8/10

Adebayo Akinfenwa - Opinions on Kenny's main summer purchase have been polarised but I am a fan. His physicality and willingness to work hard have helped Trundle enormously in attack this season resulting in 27 goals between them. To be a success in the Championship he will have to improve his finishing and fitness but we are a less potent team without him worrying opposing centre backs who will always have a job on marking him.

Owain Tudur-Jones - It looks as if Kenny has unearthed a gem in signing Owain for 5k from Welsh side Bangor. He has clear talent in both a footballing and athletic sense and his physical presence goes well with Martinez in the middle of the park whilst he has chipped in with 3 useful goals. It's good to see a Welsh lad doing so well and I'm sure John Toshack has been taking note of his performances. Da iawn Owain!!

Kevin McLeod - 7 quick fire goals at the start of the campaign alongside the re-emergence of the Swim Away enabled Macca to win over the Swansea faithful. Although things have never reached the heights of his excellent hat-trick against Bristol his crossing and willingness to battle for the ball give a balance to the midfield that we lacked last season.

7/10

Willy Gueret - Not so imposing as last season, with slightly more errors creeping in to his game, but Big Willy still pulls off fantastic saves such as the one he pulled off to give the Swans a 1-0 win at Bournemouth. He also seems to have the knack of penalties with crucial saves coming in the games against Tranmere and Colchester.

Andy Robinson - After starting the season with a lengthy ban, it has been difficult for Andy to break back into the starting line up. However, he has still managed to contribute 9 goals from midfield. Touch wood he has improved his discipline and although he doesn't quite seem to fit into the midfield with the current system he should still play a vital role as first reserve for 3 positions and in continuing his super sub role.

Ezomo Iriekpen - Izzy has been pretty solid at the back and despite the defence not entirely functioning as a unit, he has produced many important tackles and has pace and strength to match anyone at this level. A criticism would be that he doesn't poses the aerial threat he should do from corners or free kicks.

Gary Monk - Much the same as for Iriekpen in that he has been solid enough as an individual although the defence hasn't looked totally watertight. The same point regarding attacking headers also applies to him.

Sam Ricketts - He has not really been himself so far this season but has sporadically shown us his full potential and produced awesome performances down the left. He has been solid defensively but hasn't had the same attacking menace he did last year. Perhaps he could do with a bit more time for resting as his Wales performances have been top notch but have often been followed by a lack lustre showing for the Swans.

Adrian Forbes - Much maligned, but he has come up with 3 vital goals and often springs a surprise on us just when he has been written off. His pace is a huge asset in the last 20mins coming off the bench and he has a role to play even whilst Leon is dominating the right wing slot.

6/10

Kristian O'Leary - Kris provides good cover in central midfield and his displays at centre back in the LDV have been solid. He showed against Yeovil that he still has a role to play this season but only on occasions. A good guy to have around, best of luck with the injury.

Kevin Austin - Kevin was arguably our most consistent defender at the start of the campaign, but 2 red cards and a body that isn't getting any younger have counted against him. If he can continue his mostly solid displays when asked to cover at centre back, I feel that left back is not an option now due to his lack of pace, there is an outside chance we could possibly see a Swansea representative at the world cup with Trinidad & Tobago.

Brian Murphy - The young Irishman has proved an able deputy for Willy in the LDV and I think he could do with a couple of league games to keep Willy on his toes. Whether he is ready for the 1st XI is doubtful for now, but he is a good shot stopper and I would not be worried about calling on him for 1 or 2 games so long as he stops handling the ball outside the box.

Shaun MacDonald - The youngster has enjoyed his first taste of senior football and although he is not ready for first team football just yet, he has shown potential and the right attitude, especially when thrown on against Reading in the Carling cup. It would do no harm to bring him off the bench in league games that are already won with 20mins to go.

5/10

Paul Connor - Despite always giving 100% application Paul is probably not good enough to be a front line striker in League 1. He has scored twice in his limited opportunities this season and although he is not a bad player to fill in for Bayo, he has neither an abundance of pace, strength nor lethal finishing. Backup or back to League 2 for him.

Marc Goodfellow - His pre season displays made him look like an absolute bargain in signing on a free from Bristol City, but with Kenny reverting back to 4-42 Marc seemed to loose the attacking edge he had in a 4-3-3. I do feel however that he deserved more chances to impress particularly coming off the bench with his pace in the last 20mins.

Mark Pritchard - Another who I feel deserves more opportunities, Mark's only game came against Torquay where he failed to impress. I would rather see his name on the team sheet that Lee Thorpe's though as he is still young and can develop into a useful player.

Marcus Bean - The QPR loanee attracted much criticism during his stay, but played reasonably well in midfield although I believe his role could be performed just as competently by KOL and more so by OTJ.

3/10

Lee Thorpe - Few chances this year and behind Bayo, Trundle and Connor there aren't likely to be. He was credited with a large number of assists whilst on loan at Peterborough without actually managing to get on the score sheet and I think he would make a good signing for a League 2 club in a similar situation to what we were a year ago.

1/10

Ijah Anderson - Possibly the new Fiskin, his Swansea career should be over regardless of the result of his appeal. If he really is innocent I wish him the best of luck in proving it.
