Saints Need To Be Canny This Week Monday, 22nd Aug 2011 09:52
As the hours count down to the transfer window shutting Saints need to be careful with their money.
Of course many clubs will believe we are loaded after the sale of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, whether we are willing to spend it or not is open to debate, but the fact that we dont need to spend too much of it isnt.
Looking at the Saints squad its hard to see where it could be improved, of course you could say signing Wayne Rooney and a host of other Premiership stars would improve it, but realistically Saints cant get many better Championship quality players than they already have.
This means that they need to be selective in what dealings they do this week, its well documented or to be more accurate rumoured that we are in the market for a striker and whilst it seems we are ready to splash anything between £1.5 million on Jutkeiwicz from Coventry up to £6.5 for either Nicky Maynard or Jay Rodrigues, you have to ask the question whether any of them are any better than we have got, especially when you consider apart from our three frontmen we also have Guly who can play up top if needed, personally I would prefer to see Saints spend wisely in this department, Jutkiewicz would represent value for money and unlike several of the others he is a replacement for Lambert as a big bustling centre forward, but if we are to boost our striking options why not go for potential rather than big fees, Adam Le Fondre is available at around £500k.
Central defence is perhaps the area in which we really need to strengthen, to be blunt if we are too maintain our good start, we need to find an experienced partner for Fonte, but someone who is also young, Kasper Gorkss certainly fits the bill here and could well be obtained without paying anything out if we can get rid of Puncheon to QPR at the same time.
But apart from these two positions its hard to see where we can really improve and it may be better to keep our money in our pocket and save it for January when it will be more apparent where we might need to improve rather than spending for spendings sake.
Im sure that Nigel Adkins and the others on the Saints transfer committee will have identified their targets and hopefully bring at least one of them in before the window closes.

Unless Rickie Lambert is looking to hang his boots up in the next couple of seasons, and why would he as I think this could be his best season to date, i think we should just look to consoldiate the defense with an experienced CB. On the face of it the Gorkss deal looks too good to be true and the fact that we havent executed it hints that something isnt quite right., perhaps personnal term or the fact that Gorkss wants Premiership football .... who knows. Also Saints now seem to do business quitely with the first we know about it is when its a done deal. I like that business approach personnaly and that also doest fit the Gorkss deal either. in short I think we should buy an experienced CB and poicket the rest of the cash. Maybe re evaluate at Christmas if something is glaringly obvious. Other than that keep money in the bank for the future. Its a marathon not a sprint

Agree about perhaps waiting until January to strengthen, especially as I assume we would be able to get a player or two on loan if we had an 'emergency'! Just one point though - Kaspars Gorks is not "young'' at 29

I think that the board and Adkin's approach to player dealings is exemplary. More clubs should follow our lead. I also don't think we should be held to ransom on players. We're not exactly in a desperate position and I think with the exception of an additional centre back we can wait until January before making any other moves.

Nick, you seems to be contradicting yourself here. All along you've pointed our where we need improvement but in this article you've twice stated otherwise!

Jutwiewicz appears to be value for money but in reality he really isn't that good. I think we should look to the continent if we're after a striker as the fees being payed for English players are massively hyper-inflated. 6.5 mill for Rodriguez or Maynard!? I would be gutted if we spent that money on either of them. Also, there is absolutely no way Gorkss is coming in. I smell something fishy with that deal. Let 'im rot on the subs bench at Loftus Road if there's enough room to sit on it. If Adkins is going to sign anyone (which I doubt as there doesn't seem to be anyone suitable in the pipe-line) I reckon it will be complete surprise name.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Arsenal Polls |
