I reckon they have all the names on a dart board, a bit like the Bullseye board and Hill throws to see who the captain is in the event of Cavanagh being absent. Jim Bowen's voice then comes from the board and tells you who you selected. | |

Maybe it's just me but I've always thought that who the captain is doesn't influence the game whatsoever. Players who like to encourage will encourage, regardless of their armband or lack thereof. Players who team-mates look to for leadership will be looked to regardless, too.
Having said that, there's evidence the captaincy may calm certain players down (Rooney, Holt, etc.) but I highly doubt it has any bearing on a match. |  | | |

These days I'd imagine the captain is the one you want to be talking to the ref in certain situations so having a cool head is good. As for him having an effect over the players, if you cant step up because of who your captain is you shouldn't be playing footy IMO. I'd imagine there are several 'leaders' on the pitch at any given time [Post edited 6 Aug 2013 20:03]
