Relegation to cost Dale £500,000 on 10:38 - Apr 27 by IcelandDale | What our loyal band of happy 2000 don't seem to realise is the greatest marketing asset of the club is you yourselves. You know how much more fun it is to go to the Dale rather than to Man U or City. Drag your mates there, bore 'em into it and get effing lucky and pick a Bury at home rather than a Stevenage/Tranmere. If they're not interested offer to take their kids at your expense, (yes I know we're not made of the stuff). Posters in the Asda car park etc. and gimcrack gimmicks are a waste of money. As if people don't know when there's a game on ffs. Having said that, the only other interesting idea I've heard is the proposed scheme to let in season ticket holders of other clubs in for a fiver. Bury and Oldham are a waste of time for this though. We need to go to the big two. Do some market research amongst the red and blue fan base. Let 'em pay on the day and get the turnstiles/catering organised to handle this properly. I think there's something to this. I think we could pick up a short term boost and some real fans in the medium/long term.We have to get beyond the 2000 somehow to survive and god forbid prosper. Thoughts? |
Good point about fans being assets. I wonder how many people are put off by the constant whingeing and moaning they hear in the stands, when they turn up for the occasional fixture? It was happening even when we were playing top notch stuff under Hillcroft!!! Do I need to say any more? [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

I dont agree that the people who whinge and moan deter fans from attending games. These people are present at every football club in the country, Man Utd/City have plenty of them as well and look at the standard of football they watch week in week out. At the end of the day we all go to the match to get away from our sometimes mundane Monday to Friday existance and having a good moan is all part of the therapy. Some people are genuinley only happy when they are moaning and would rather concentrate on the negatives than the positives, some of these go to Spotland with the sole intention of moaning you can never change them. At the end of the day, they are all part of attending live games and lets remember they do actually get up off their arses to pay their entrance fee for the privilege. The players arent little kids and if they kop a bit of abuse because they arent performing then big deal, it wont do them any harm!!

Hate to think what would happen to our attendence if we excluded the moaners - if they pay their admission I am happy for them to moan as much as they like. Have you ever been to Man U, Man C, etc - they have enough moaners to fill Spotland several times over but it doesnt put off the other 30, 40, 50K going. Seems a strange attempt to blame the fans for poor attendences!

On a serious note though, no-ones suggesting moaners should be excluded or even that they're not welcome - I've done my fair share over the decades! But the question was posed about fans being assets in attracting others to games. I've sat alongside "occasional" supporters at big games who've looked pretty askance at some of the unjustified outbursts against whole-hearted players such as Jonah, so it's a fair point IMO, whether people agree with it or not.
