My point is, if people are to wear masks to help others, why not wear masks that actually do a job?

A pack of 3 from Poundland will not do a job, but allow you to virtue signal well.

Also, why no social distancing? Why do I need to
wear a mask in the co-op but not in a packed nightclub or gig?

When that latest variant is found to be non-descript at least it will likely result in the last of these "measures"

You say that a cheap pack won’t do a job but they will, even if the only reduce the spread of the virus slightly they are doing a job. I’m sure you have seen the graphics about who for the particles are projected when you sneeze. Any kind of barrier across your mouth will reduce the distance and to some extent the number of particles. It is better than nothing.

You're recommending that masks be worn everywhere now then, is that your position?

Most definitely in high risk environments. .its logical isn't it, surely.

Can't cherry pick locations, the virus surely doesn't discriminate certain settings does it?

That's great that you're supporting mask wearing. You've surprised me there.

I look forward to your future posts about tightening restrictions etc when we know more about this variant.

The case rate in Wales is higher than England but they’ve had masks in shops for months, I’ll wear one but it’s fooking pointless.

Wearing a mask is a 'slight' help and shouldnt be an issue to sensible people trying to help reduce the covid spread and help the nhs. I didnt stop wearing one in July inside shopping areas as its the most logical thing to do. It really shouldnt have stopped and its little wonder since then that the known covid cases have stayed over 30K+ a day.

Lets not forget that Covid spreads mostly inside housing, schools, healthcare, workplaces and where food and drink is available with no/little airflow.

Ive read some amazing unreal things online from the fruitloops thinking its all about 'control' and to 'silence' people LOL What sort of mindset thinks that stuff ! These people also have the brass balls to talk about mental health, whilst being fully plugged into the dangerous nutjobs on social media spreading lies and fear.

according to the WHO, unless the mask is surgical grade, and/or 3 layers, it is useless

but, you keep believing this

a mask - what kind?
surgical? something you would wear to visit chernobyl?
what about a saints footy scarf? or something nice from poundland?

how good are these masks?

Try any FFp2/3 or N95 mask. That will help.

if you travel on some airlines they will insist on this. it is amazing how people find out what mask is required when it affects their ability to travel !

Fully agree, had the flights from SA used the correct masks and obviously the appropriate PCR tests then there wouldn't be the added threat of this horrendous omicron variant we're now facing.

The SA authorities have obviously dropped the ball in regards to halting the variant being able to have breached their borders.

I tend to agree. Yes, if someone sneezes, the mask catches some of the particles. But let's say that person then touches their mask, scratches their nose or whatever and then they touch things in the supermarket that other people then touch? Or they sneeze into the mask then put it down somewhere and the virus is over the mask. A family member works in a school telling me that the teenagers are leaving their masks all over the place, using them as sling shots and all sorts. So this behaviour could be spreading more germs.

And can anybody explain how it's beneficial for example, all fans have to wear a mask on the supporters coach, only to take them off when they eat and drink. So if a fan had covid and they take it off to eat and drink, they would breath onto the coach whilst eating, spreading the virus anyway.

Thirdly, anyone saying what's the problem, wear a mask, yes it's easy to wear one in the shop, but people who need to communicate (teachers, doctors, waitors and waitresses) have a hard time being heard and it makes their job tougher.

The problem with masks isn't that they don't work, by all accounts looking at the science they do, it's that the policy around them makes no sense, the education around them is poor - like someone mentioned the cloth ones aren't massively helpful - and the uptake is too low.

Good knows how you fix the issue of making them work for people who need to be heard, or people who work with folk like deaf people, that's a very real problem and i'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough to solve it

Are there any red lines to this game of "Simon says"? What about everyone wearing gloves, what about hazmat suits, what about planes spraying sanitizer on us, what about we all stay in our padded homes, what about we all give up on life?

How long do we play these covid games - 3 weeks to flatten the curve? if we all lock down once, if we all lock down once again, If everyone wears a piece of cloth over their face, if everyone takes an experimental vaccine, if everyone takes a booster, if everyone proves they have taken a jab. If it wasn't so sad it would be hilarious.

But keep listening to your covid cheerleaders like Dorset "govern me harder Daddy" Ian and everything will be okay, well in a totalitarian kind of way.

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.

The vast majority nowadays have hand held devices that you can type your request or even dictate and show your host/customer etc to forward your request/concern..I know it may be a bit slow but it would ease some communication issues.

And what political benefit does wearing a mask confer upon whom?

901, I hope you are not trying to make me talk conspiratorially after our congenial host expressly forbade it!

You are smart enough to know that you should never waste a crisis and I am 100% certain that a lot of rich people made a lot more money from the mask mandate, as they have from the lockdowns which saw a huge transfer of wealth back to big business and also from the vaccine rollout (the regularly timed variants will ensure that the Plebs scurry off to get their boosters, just in case their resolve was waning after listening to those annoying sceptics!

Well absolute eradication of these viruses including incubation and transmission is deemed at 3 weeks to break the cycle..if this was adhered to by every last one of us then it would completely break the cycle and an instant return to normality would be achieved.

21 days of pain.. then zero need for restrictions and vaccines..I'm 100% up for that..it would instantly quell any conspiracies and bring an end to the sad state we are currently in mate.

That would not remove the need to vaccines due to the propensity of viruses to mutate, and remain within a host for a time. As vaccines primarily stimulate our immune system to produce antibodies before they are actually needed to save our lives I still so not see what having a vaccination as harmful or a means of the state to control us? Many problems exposed after people have had a vaccine are often manifestations of other latent issues that could have emerged to greater human cost later on.

Don’t you think we have moved well past the “experimental vaccine” stage by now given the number of people who had had them and the close scrutiny they get?
As for your constant attempts to try and win people around to your point of view, why bother? Do you honestly think those who haven’t dined up to the Flat Earthers yet are going to do so now?

He’s right though isn’t he Jelly. The vaccines are hardly ‘experimental’, and it’s almost certain that nobody is paying any attention to your always stupid Covid observations.

And it’s funny that you view my faith in humanity in general and doctors and scientists in particular in sadomasochistic terms. I fear it reveals a lot about you. More than we perhaps need to know on here.

Ian, I always feel you show a complete lack of self awareness about how OTT your own views are, especially as more people start to reconise this global technocratic tyranny, take this excellent and well balanced piece from author Paul Kingsnorth- you may recognise yourself in it, but knowing you, you probably won't.

Exactly, and how.

Measles, Mumps and Rubella, together with Hep B are now routinely given to around 1.6m babies each year including boosters. These are relatively stable viruses, but the numbers are relatively miniscule compared to the UK 107m Covid 19 vaccinations in a year.

Even with Influenza, where the virus is much more dynamic, the UK administers around 9m pa. When you take the Covid 19 programme across the EU and USA, who have generally used the same vaccines, there is no way that the vaccines can still be called experimental as they probably have more known about them than most vaccinations currently used globally, given how much they have been scrutinised. What we don't know about so well is the virus itself.

The vaccines were new, but not experimental once out of the trials phase. Some of the arguments against (not all) remind me of the Corbinistas who still think that 1960s and 1970s socialism is the way forward and stick to the old, disproved thinking and arguments regardless of their version of black magic having been long disproved. It would be funny if it wasn't dangerous.

The fact that you think my views are OTT says it all.

I believe that Covid is real. I believe that doctors and scientists are honest and acting in good faith. And I believe that Vaccines works.

That's pretty much it. It's hardly an extremist's bible, is it? You can't accept these very basic truths because you spend too much time desperately searching for things which simply aren't there.

Oh yes, I forgot Ian, you don't do nuance. Your ABC of truth sounds great. I can agree that Covid is real, I can agree that doctors and scientists are doing their best within set parameters, i can agree that most vaccines have helped society. The devil is always in the detail.

Am I right in thinking you want a totalitarian state or are you overstating to crush opposition?
Do you believe in bodily autonomy or does the state own your body?
Do you think the unvaxxed should be fined and eventually imprisoned?
Do you think we should be discussing vaccine injury and particularly the rise of myocarditis?
