It looks like the Conservatives!!!

In a key speech earlier today ( which unsurprisingly is not being reported by some of the more traditional papers on the right) Kemi Badenoch has laid a lot of the blame for the Conservative Party under Theresa May and Boris Johnson as it had failed to plan for Brexit and that they had also promised low immigration but instead allowed the numbers to rise.

“I will acknowledge the Conservative party made mistakes,” Badenoch said. “We were making announcements without proper plans. We announced that we would leave the European Union before we had a plan for growth outside the EU.” It’s a political speak for saying it’s been a cluster xxxx - which to be fair most would agree with. Badenoch still voted for it mind you.

We’re stuck with Brexit and have to make the most of the hand we have. People who are advocating we reverse Brexit are being unrealistic, it’s not going to happen because there isn’t an overwhelming majority in favour of a return to the EU and even if there was, it would take years to sort out.
Now that it seems some of our political class have realised Brexit has been poorly handled, let’s hope we can get some action which will move things in a positive direction.

No one has to be a genius to realise the car crash of non policies regarding the EU although it's just nice to see an admission of guilt now perhaps someone can actually put it right and do what was promised.

"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

Agree with you, we can all see most aspects of it have been poorly executed, but that’s not the narrative we’ve been fed up to now.

Putting it right will be a challenge because Brexit means different things to so many people.

10 years after the Brexit vote disaster then another vote is possible.

Democracy did not stop in 2016.

If the Tories went rejoin then that would create a stir and outflank Labour.
Labour are scared to speak truth to power.

The truth is Brexit remains a dumb ass idea that can never work. Doh !

Agreed
I am still waiting to see just how Britain has benefitted
I believe it was to safeguard our borders better and run ourselves
And ,to improve trade .
Yeah baby

Seems running ourselves is our main problem. We haven’t a party that can do this . Vacuous Tories and clueless Labour . Look at the state we’re in

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

A great idea to leave an undemocratic EU

This year alone the UK will save €24 billion which would have been the Uk's share of the EU budget.

Still some people cannot accept a democratic decision. The EU is failing, Germany in recession, EU unemployment higher than the UK .

I agree. We have to look forward.

So many of the agruments made by both sides on both the positives and negatives are flimsy at best and disingenuous at worst.

There isn't (nor should there be) a vote in the near future. We've just to get on with it.

Having said that, although I wouldn't push for another referendum, I do think we should get past the whole 'lets be nasty to Europe' rubbish and get on with forging positive links with our closest trading partner.

It was portrayed as a once in a lifetime vote, voting for a government is a completely different scenario.

Not sure how we’d have saved £24bn this year because in the last year of our membership our hate contribution after getting our rebate was around £12bn.

We now have to pay the “divorce bill” which is reducing from £9bn per year to around £3bn per year.

The best answer I have is the whole shenanigans was handled very badly by a totally clueless bunch of politicians.

I still have to say, the EU has been pushing hard to bin all rebates. If we were to rejoin it would be on worse terms than we had when we left.

I'm 100% with Gwyn, we need to crack on and make it work. It's still the xcase there are people who want it to fail and will not give up on that but if we want a better future we have to work towards it and stop the pointless complaining.
The state the EU is currently in and it's future, they don't look so good right now. As much as the Europhiles won't/don't like it but maybe the best place to be right now is outside the EU but trying to negotiate a sensible new deal. The Tories screwed up badly, everything Bojo touched became a farce.

100% agree with your observations.

Brexit has been handled poorly, party issues and political dogma have been put above the national interest. We won’t go back in the short to medium term and you are right if we did it would be on much worse terms. We had the rebate and while the EU weren’t happy, the veto we held ensured we could torpedo any attempts to remove it.

We’re out and staying out and we have to put our energies in making the best of the hand we’re holding, like you I’ve got kids making their way in life and I want them to have the best opportunities they can and do well.

Anybody with kids, if they care about them, should be trying to find the best way forward.

Even if we had the vote and chose to rejoin how many years would it take?

We have to do the best we can because we have very little say over the big things so carrying on the best way we can is the onlky sensible thing.

2 people have actually voted for Corbyn.

Ok, Jezza is a prize plonker, but blaming him for the Brexit fiasco is like blaming Poland for the outbreak of WW2.

He was asleep at the wheel like many others and very late to the party. Few were convinced about the words that came out of his mouth.

Rise of UKIP which forced Cameron's hand?

What caused the rise of UKIP?

It was the ERG group in the Tory party with Rees Mogg and his chums. They were causing trouble in Conservative party and forced Cameron to hold a referendum. He had defeated the Scottish referendum and thought he would win but the Remainers were complacent.

The people of Bridgend and Port Talbot did not realise Tata Steel would end raw steel making at PT and lose jobs and Ineos at Bridgend would have covered those losses. The WAG knew this and arranged a site and facilities. The WAG recommended a remain vote. The people of Port Talbot and Bridgend rejected the WAG recommendation and many now are unemployed. You get what you vote for. No tears from me. Ineos pulled out within weeks and transferred to Toulouse.

Their politicians may be more accountable but when you are on the role it s does not seem so important. Tories now blame the WAG and poor transport links which were classed as perfectly ok for Ineos in 2016. Many Welsh people accept this deflection just as they accepted Brexit..

Others would argue that TATA would always move their steel making because they can do it much cheaper elsewhere.

They would also say that Ineos chose Toulouse because the authorities there made them a much better proposal and the authorities in this country couldn't or wouldn't match it let alone beat it.

When UKIP started to make ground, that was when Tory MP's started calling for the referendum. Cameron thought he could negotiate a better deal and guarantee winning the vote, he was wrong, he got roundly snubbed. He also tried to rely on personal loyalty amongst the tories but he got shafted there too.

It is called democracy something unheard of by the thick people in Russia. In 2024 150,000 Russian soldiers have died in Putin's undemocratic war.

In the UK the majority of people voted to leave the undemocratic EU after listening to the case put forward by both the leavers and remainers.

The EU is in a worst state than the UK with higher unemployment and a debt and immigration crisis.

The UK share of the EU budget in 2023 would have been €24 billion and even more in 2024 and 2025 as the UK GDP has overtaken France and has grew faster than Germany in 2024.

Sticking to that £24 billion figure?

That’s about as accurate as the Truss £30 billion one.

Well the UK unemploymnt rate is 4.4%, the EU rate is currently 5.9%

Our GDp is never going to be bigger than 27 other countries though, he can never be right on that.

Growth though...

Presidential elections were held in Russia from 15 to 17 March 2024.[1][2][a] It was the eighth presidential election in the country. The incumbent president Vladimir Putin won with 88% of the vote, the highest percentage in a presidential election in post-Soviet Russia,[4] gaining a fifth term in what was widely viewed as a foregone conclusion.[5][6] He was inaugurated on 7 May 2024

Our GDP isn’t going to be bigger than the other 27 countries, but the average rate at which their economies are growing is much higher than the rate our economy is growing.

Germany's GDP last year was -0.1%, Italy's was expected to be 0.7 with the Uk in at 1%...predicted all.

They always revise the figures 6 months on because predictions are always dodgy. You can never believe the first figures they trot out.
