Brian Flynn - his contribution to Swansea City 23:01 - Aug 2 with 19019 viewsGroo

Had to start a new thread to see what the general consensus was on Flynn's time here. Basically this comes from Darran's comments that quite shocked me that he blamed Flynn for our being so close to losing our league position, where as I have always seen Flynn as a saviour who stopped us from going down. The following is how I remember it.

The current board took over the club in 2002 and shortly after we lost Colin Addison as manager, due to financial reasons I believe, I thought he had gone when Petty was still in charge but reading up a bit it appears he went after the buy out.

Nick Cusack was the team captain and well thought of by the fans, the board then made what I feel has been their one and only bad management appointment, they appointed Cusack, initially as caretaker with Freestone and then as full manager.

Nick Cusack had no managerial experience and was thrown in at the deep end to sink or swim. He saw us through to the end of the season with Roger Freestone, where we finished 20th.

We needed to build a team as the squad had been destroyed during the shambles the previous year. Cusack I remember recruited a number of players, some of which came from hastily arranged trial matches. We ended up starting the season with a team made up of the dregs of the football league.

On September 19th 2002, after 9 games Cusack was sacked as manager, we had just 6 points and were bottom of the football league, the team was an absolute shambles.

Brian Flynn was appointed the same day and had the task of saving us from the drop. His starting point was Cusacks squad who were in a rut of losing games, he looked to try and improve the squad and brought in the likes of Leon and Martinez, by the end of October we had doubled our points total to 12 by Jan 1st we had tripled that original points tally to 18 and were still bottom.

As we all know, we eventually survived by the skin of our teeth on the last day of the season.

Darran appears to blame Flynn for this, where as I blame the shambles of a squad put together by Cusack which Flynn inherited.

In his only summer transfer window he brought in the likes of Trundle and Robinson, the following season, rather than being at the foot of the division, we found ourselves at the top end, leading in the early stages. As the season wore on, our position started dropping and rumours of indiscipline and drinking were all about which ended up with Flynn leaving and Jacket replacing him.

That first season in charge though, I believe that Flynn saved us and I feel under most managers we would have gone, the position we were left in by Cusack, who wasn’t equipped to manage the team, and the team we had when Flynn took over, we were only ever going out of the league.

So as asked, am I wrong? Did Flynn not save us? Was it Flynn’s fault we were bottom when we were?

Flynn did what was asked of him in keeping us up and made some good signings along the way but if he had been left in charge there is no way this club would have progressed in the way it has.

probably true, but to say we were going "backwards" under Flynn as Darran has stated is ridiculous and baffling

Probably not, but that's not how it works, is it? Did Laudrup personally scout, discover and sign all the players that have joined us since he's been here?

Probably not.
Anyway just for the record when Flynn was sacked after the hideous performance at Macclesfield we'd won about 3 of our previous 15 games.
Whether anyone disagrees that we were going backwards is totally irrelevant because we certainly weren't going forwards.

And I've already said that we got rid of him at the right time. Doesn't alter the fact that you (and others) refuse to credit Flynn for the work he did during that crucial season purely because you don't like him for some reason. If Flynn hadn't managed this club, we wouldn't be where we are now. FACT.

I cant see how saving us from relegation out of the football league in his 1st season and then finding ourselves in mid table the season after constitutes going backwards. we still finished mid table, so lets face it, it wasn't such a huge loss to have such a bad run, it was hardly detrimental. we had a bad run last season after we lost to Liverpool, but we still finished in a good position

Well, we were bottom when he took over, top early the following season, but around tenth and dropping when he got sacked. So we went forwards, but technically we were going backwards again.

As to the assertion that his sacking was premature, Leon Britton has more chance of playing in the NBA than Flynn had of taking us up. Other than a month or two at the start of the 03/04 season we were mostly shit under Flynn, although obviously some of that wasn't his fault. Quite a lot of it was though, even after the players he brought in.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

We should have been safe long before the last game of the season and would have been if the f*cking manager hadn't have been living in Burnley at the same time.

absolutely spot on Darren he should have moved I heard he only came down once a week NOT GOOD ENOUGH but he made some good signings

So, to summarise:

Flynn kept us up despite only doing the job 2 days a week. It may or may not have been more comfortable.
Flynn signed some really good and some really rubbish players. The good ones were down to Reeves. The rubbish ones were probably Flynn's.
Flynn was unlucky to be sacked, despite us being in freefall at the time and he was spending more time at Burnley's ground than ours.

That about cover it?

And he didn't have a cup of tea with Darran, hence Prosser's disdain for him.

He did a fine job for us at the time and I will always remember him for that & be grateful! We would have gone down if it wasn't for him & as a lot of people have said we wouldn't be where we are now.

Some of the events over the last 10 years have felt awful at the time like the petty crisis, leaving the vetch & the Barnsley play off defeat but again without them we wouldn't be the club we are today!

We've all got different opinions and that is why football drives you crazy sometimes but would any of us change it? I know I wouldn't!

Proud to be a swan whatever the result! A jack from birth, North bank boy from 1988, east stand man till I die! Thank you to the board of Swansea city for giving me a club I always dreamed of!

Another thing that always gets said about Flynn - players we signed under him who were good were Kevin Reeves signings, players we signed under him who were rubbish were Flynn signings.

Hypocritical b*llocks. Flynn did well for SCFC. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.

Flynn or Reeves did a hell of a job persuading anyone to sign for us given the mess we were in a decade or so ago.
Regardless, its all part of the story of our fantastic club so why dwell on it whatever your opinion of the job Flynn did for us.
My view, Britton, Martinez, Tate, who was the guy in charge when they hit SA1? Thank you Brian but impossible as it may sound it seems he's shrinking with age after seeing him on ITV4!

Read the blokes post FFS ,nobody had to persuade any of them to come here when we were bottom of the league mun they weren't signing their careers away.
If we'd gone down none of them would have cared the following season.
