Brian Flynn - his contribution to Swansea City 23:01 - Aug 2 with 19384 viewsGroo

Had to start a new thread to see what the general consensus was on Flynn's time here. Basically this comes from Darran's comments that quite shocked me that he blamed Flynn for our being so close to losing our league position, where as I have always seen Flynn as a saviour who stopped us from going down. The following is how I remember it.

The current board took over the club in 2002 and shortly after we lost Colin Addison as manager, due to financial reasons I believe, I thought he had gone when Petty was still in charge but reading up a bit it appears he went after the buy out.

Nick Cusack was the team captain and well thought of by the fans, the board then made what I feel has been their one and only bad management appointment, they appointed Cusack, initially as caretaker with Freestone and then as full manager.

Nick Cusack had no managerial experience and was thrown in at the deep end to sink or swim. He saw us through to the end of the season with Roger Freestone, where we finished 20th.

We needed to build a team as the squad had been destroyed during the shambles the previous year. Cusack I remember recruited a number of players, some of which came from hastily arranged trial matches. We ended up starting the season with a team made up of the dregs of the football league.

On September 19th 2002, after 9 games Cusack was sacked as manager, we had just 6 points and were bottom of the football league, the team was an absolute shambles.

Brian Flynn was appointed the same day and had the task of saving us from the drop. His starting point was Cusacks squad who were in a rut of losing games, he looked to try and improve the squad and brought in the likes of Leon and Martinez, by the end of October we had doubled our points total to 12 by Jan 1st we had tripled that original points tally to 18 and were still bottom.

As we all know, we eventually survived by the skin of our teeth on the last day of the season.

Darran appears to blame Flynn for this, where as I blame the shambles of a squad put together by Cusack which Flynn inherited.

In his only summer transfer window he brought in the likes of Trundle and Robinson, the following season, rather than being at the foot of the division, we found ourselves at the top end, leading in the early stages. As the season wore on, our position started dropping and rumours of indiscipline and drinking were all about which ended up with Flynn leaving and Jacket replacing him.

That first season in charge though, I believe that Flynn saved us and I feel under most managers we would have gone, the position we were left in by Cusack, who wasn’t equipped to manage the team, and the team we had when Flynn took over, we were only ever going out of the league.

So as asked, am I wrong? Did Flynn not save us? Was it Flynn’s fault we were bottom when we were?

Trundle mun.

As for Flynn, left a more than decent legacy but his failure to do the role full time impacted possibly our survival season but definitely the next one. He had to go.

I understand some people like to live in a sugar candy coated world but I like to live in the real world so here's another FACT for you,Kevin Reeves.

The concept of reality is very nebulous - those that claim to live in the real world rarely do.

Facts do not trump facts they just sit side by side for largely subjective comparison

No he wasn't.
I saw loads of things going on back in the day and Flynn was a joke,in all fairness this board of directors were quite raw at the time but knowing what they know now I have absolutely no doubt that if they brought a manager in in September like they did with Flynn and that manager behaved like Flynn he'd be sacked by November.

He wasnt even travelling with the players to games. He was going in his own car so he could jump in it after away games and head straight home. He was told it wasn't acceptable but carried on with it. If the board weren't so green he'd wouldn't have been allowed to get away with it for so long. You can't operate like that mun

The Facts are we stayed in the Football league under Flynn during a very difficult time for the club, and as has already been stated he brought in some very good players :- Lee Trundle, Andy Robinson, Leon Britton, Martinez, & Tate. And at a time when the club was only just getting over the Petty episode. It was unfortunate Bryan Flynn left the way he did, but to "dis" him totally is I believe very unfair.

Amazing that three of the 5 mentioned are still with the club Leon - playing, Tatey - on loan but should be playing (OK I'm very biased, LT10 - back as ambassador.
Martinez - like him or loathe him has arguably been the most important person in this club (apart from the board) over the past 10 years - player and manager.
Robinson - was a big part of our improvement and very popular until he made a bad decision.

Also, he was instrumental in producing the best Welsh youth team ever with many young Swans benefitting.

Flynn = hero

Wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back the fact that Jenks was waiting for the team bus to arrive back after losing at Macclesfield and Flynn wasn't on it (along with several players)?

I was at that game and everyone was on the coach and Flynn was in his Jag.

On the eve of one of the most important games in our history Rochdale away we stayed at the same hotel as the team the Village in Bury, the coach arrived at 3pm on the Friday afternoon with everyone except Flynn on it,Flynn strolled in at 11:30am on Saturday morning after being at home in Burnley.

That sums it up to me. We could have been safe well before the Hull game but blew some pretty winnable games thanks to Flynn. I got the impression that our relegation would have meant next to f*ck all to him. He would have just shrugged his shoulders and moved on to his next job.

BTW whoever thought of putting him in the middle of 2 six footers on the TV was having a laugh, weren't they lol

I wonder if we would be getting the same plaudits that we do now, if we didn't have the last day escape from oblivion chapter? It certainly adds a lot of romance to the story.
When Hull first went to the PL they had a lot of plaudits for rising through the 4 divisions, and had a player who played in all 4 divisions (maybe the captain), but I don't remember them getting the level of respect and plaudits that we are getting.
I may of course be biased and am certainly one eyed!

Yeah, but I was assuming that as they all played in all four divisions that Monk was being taken as a Flynn signing. Can't think of anyone else who's gone through all the leagues and still here?

Ahem...

Britton
Tate

And our new club ambassador Lee Trundle...

Still with us right?

I don't think its a secret that Flynn wasn't even down here two days a week and that can't be acceptable at a professional club. Sure he did some decent business with players brought in but there can't be any club in the country that would accept how he ran the team can there?

It was fairy tale stuff how we stayed up but the exeter game and having to win at Rochdale should never have come to that. had the players been properly led and managed we'd have been safe long before the last game.

It's a non starter as to how poor Kusacks side was but he was new to the job and let his heart rule his head and honestly thought he was doing the right thing. some players just aren't meant to be managers.

Interesting that someone who just wasn't meant to be a manager is till employed at a high level doing just that. I think someone should tell Doncaster that Flynn couldn't have got them up as hes rubbish.
And for all those of you about to roll out the fact that Saunders got them up, then I would have to point out that the same argument would suggest that it was Cusaks fault we were in the shyte. You cant have it both ways.

We should have been safe long before the last game of the season and would have been if the f*cking manager hadn't have been living in Burnley at the same time.

Correct Darren ...... Those in the know tell me Flynn was kicked out of changing room half time and they sorted themselves

Wrexham[edit source | editbeta]
He became manager of Wrexham in 1989, and remained in charge until 2001.[5] During his twelve years in charge Wrexham won the FAW Premier Cup three times gaining entry to the Cup Winners Cup. They acheived notable FA Cup giant-killing victories over reigning league champions Arsenal and Premier League West Ham United.[6][7] Flynn also led Wrexham to promotion into the second division.[7] At the time of his departure from Wrexham he was the league's third longest serving manager behind Alex Ferguson and Dario Gradi.[6]

Not meant to be a manager??

wouldn't it be more accurate to suggest that neither Flynn nor Cusack were right for SCFC as managers they both pretty much flopped. But both will be remembered fondly for their contribution to where we are now.
