Yes to both. All gravy must be consumed. I love it!

Eating good quality chips and gravy outdoors on a winter's day is a wonderful thing. Fishy Plaice, formerly Fishy Delishy, serve the best chips and gravy I've come across. They're in St Albans.

Now I'm really hungry!

In Chicago last Easter, had a beautifully indulgent dish consisting of chips, gravy and cheese called a Poutine or 'Disco Fries'. Yummy.

Living in Leeds for a few years definitely gave me a taste for chips and gravy. Hard to find down here but Mr Fish in Queens Park does a good one.

No to that nasty chippie curry sauce though

Normally a traditionalist - chips, salt, proper malt vinegar and nothing else.

But on Saturday I was tempted by a big piled-up dish of chips, cheese and bacon pieces etc in a gastro pub in Brentford (yes, they do have those now )

Anyhow, along with a nice pint of IPA, it was the perfect pre-match grub.

Canadian in origin I believe but I could happily eat Poutine every meal, though I suspect medical advice would be not to. Excellent creation.

Up at Burnley a few seasons back my daughter went to the chippy and came back with gravy on them! I nearly disowned her on the spot, gave her a lecture about being a southerner and not Northern!

I live up north and gravy is a must with chips. There's a fish and chips place here that does a onion and mushroom gravy. Fking superb.

It's not Canadian. It's Quebecois!

Mrs. PH forewarned before I tried it, so not surprised to find it to be awful slop, which just ends up soggying the fries and clogs your arteries.

I might have mentioned in a previous thread Iā€™m a vegetarian. When Iā€™m invited around to eat with the carnivores on a Sunday, either family or friends, Iā€™ll make a red wine onion gravy. Amongst the ingredients loads of onions (of course), fresh chillis, garlic, herbs, Lea & Perrins, etc. whatever applicable is to hand: marmite, brown sauce, miso, mushrooms, cider vinegar, and three bay leaves.

Iā€™ve read different things about using alcohol in cooking that you can burn it off and ruin the flavour so to be safe Iā€™ll keep topping it up every 15 minutes or so. A bottle of red minimum will be used. Half in the gravy and half Iā€™ll drink during the preparation of. The most important ingredient is time (t i m e). Itā€™s got to simmer and bubble away for at least 2 to 3 hours. Thatā€™s when the magic happens. During the meal it usually begins with ā€œCan I try a little of your veggie gravy? Just curiousā€ Soon Iā€™m fighting off a table full of carnivores who all want some of my red wine ā€˜crackā€™ onion gravy. I am a gravy alchemist.

ps: and for any militant anti-vegetarians out there for you I prepare my arse-gravy x

Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce? It's got the salty foreign things that caught Mr McCarthy out.

In the Isle of Man, we call it chips, cheese 'n gravy because we're not effete, and we use proper cheddar and not tasteless curds. And we pay our taxes.
In fact, every year we celebrate our unofficial national dish on the last Monday in January.
How much culture can one small island have?

Add a dash of novichok to the Quebecois cheesy chips and gravy to make it a Vladimir Poutine.

Am I the only one on here who thinks gravy has no place on chip shop chips? Just f*cking horrible, the thought of it is vile. For northerners only! No thanks!

I feel the same, salt and vinegar is all that belongs on chips.

I'm ok with gravy on chips - BUT, if gravy does not contain wine & marmite in the heating process, its criminal. I hate any & all gravy except my own. KFC, fook off

Was in Malta last month, stopped in an Irish bar (Dubliner?) and had onion gravy on chips and a pint in the sun - bloody lovely
