Onuoha on loosing his mum on 13:47 - Mar 19 with 6939 views | SheffieldHoop | Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Nedum was having a really tough time, losing a parent is shit, my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer when I was 25, deteriorated quickly but perhaps not as quick as first thought, died about 15 long and painful weeks later. I have no siblings so had to pay for the whole thing myself, hospital trips, ubers, trains from Ruislip/Mount Vernon to Croydon late at night so I could get to a 7am meeting, Uber Fckin Eats because you're constantly forgetting to eat until everywhere is shut, the funeral, the wake, the whole lot. And I still had a boss asking me if/when I would show up for work. For a paltry 26k per annum in my case, so perhaps not as eager as Nedum to get myself back in there. But also couldn't afford any drops in my pay. That's life. What I find truly remarkable is they put this stuff out, seemingly expecting everyone to have their empathy levels raised beyond any previously recorded human level.......But we don't, because we all go through this shit in our lives, we've all had some cnt asking whether we can do that report they need by next Tuesday while watching our loved ones deteriorate before our eyes, if not parents then grandparents. Now 1 or 2 sarcastic comments will be made on twitter (Probably by people with far more challenging lives in far more difficult circumstances than Onouha) and before you know it, Nedum is the victim of social media abuse. And that's the next story in the perpetual victim narrative. Baiting? Who's baiting?

I just think he's just using his platform in the public eye to talk about something that affects a lot of people and for 90% of people who view it won't mean a lot but for some people struggling maybe hearing about someone's experience will help them. If people want to bait or abuse him over it that's up to them but think he's doing a good thing here

Nedum Onouha talking about the trauma of being asked when you'll return to work while caring for a terminally ill parent? in what way does it help anyone? The fact is - Most people on his wage at that time would go - people working in call centers for 7 quid an hour wouldn't. Not comparable, not helpful.

of course the wages side is not relatable but it's the situation that some people can relate to, plenty won't be able to or want to but it doesn't hurt for someone to share experiences of a difficult time in their life

Nah, it's tone deaf, a multi-millionaire coming out to play the victim over something most of us have or will experience at some time in a far more traumatic way. Why Sky sports would give it a platform I do not know. As I say, at times the cynic in me feels that they invite the abuse, as it gives them something else to talk about.

How do you know/calibrate how 'traumatic' losing his mother was for him, or how much for anyone? I did find it a little strange he barely mentioned his wife in his whole testimony, and think the interviewer could have been a little more (compassionately) probing, but Ned is clearly a decent and sensitive man, and it seems pretty churlish to discriminate against him, in effect, when it comes to grief and bereavement, because he's a wealthy footballer.

I'm not. I'm calibrating how traumatic it is to be asked to go to work in that scenario. Considerably less so for the 2.5 million P/a footballer than the 23k P/a Healthcare Assistant, in my opinion And therefore slightly inappropriate for Sky Sports to give him that platform to talk about his specific situation, in the guise of "helping" others, in my opinion [Post edited 19 Mar 15:12]

I think you need to look beyond the amount of money that somebody earns in this kind of scenario. Do you apply the same logic if a footballer is suffering from mental health issues?

I agree. Losing a close relative has nothing to do with the amount you earn. Having mental health issues has nothing to do with how much you earn. And I earn very little but I don't see what somebody either earns or doesn't earn has to do with either subject.

Depends on the "mental health issue" we're talking about. Referring himself to IAPT? Yeah probably. Forensic mental health inpatient at Broadmoor? Probably not.

Let me put it this way - I think I would have found my situation far easier to cope with had I been paid 45 grand per week at the time. As it is, I wasn't, and I was still expected to turn up to work. Hence, I struggle to offer the level of empathy it feels like I'm being asked for. Never said being loaded makes it easy, just easier.

I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in August 2022 - a few months before I was retiring. No symptoms but detected when I took a poo test, which has ultimately saved my life. I opted for robotic surgery and underwent post surgical treatment as well as being in the 5yr surveillance program. 18 months on and I’m doing really well with no signs of a return of my cancer. Good luck to anyone who is going through that journey. For me, money doesn’t come into it when you lose a loved one. We all deal with death differently. I must admit when I was diagnosed it made me think how short life is. I really do live every day as though it were my last - you just never know what’s around the corner.
