Michael Barnier has admitted that Britain could not have achieved is vaccine success if we had remained members of the EU. He added that Britain and America have proved that taking risks can sometimes be worthwhile.

A free UK on 09:28 - May 15 by majorraglan | Nothing he said impacts on freedom of movement between EU States by EU citizens and I can’t see much in the media to say he “does not care” the EU dream. He’s not changed his mind about freedom of movement within the EU, he’s advocating France introduces the ban on external immigration. There’s no doubt he wants the top job in France, he’s another member of the self serving elite establishment. |
Your last sentence nails it, he's just saying what he thinks will get him elected. It's entirely possible his attitude during brexit was partly playing to the French voters, he's probably been planning his election run for years. So all this talk about Brexit being racist and xenophobic, it turns out the EU isn't quite so immigrant friendly anymore whereas the UK was always talking about controlled immigration, not closed borders.

One in ceuta they are in the EU. It seems there is a diplomatic impasse between Morocco and Spain as the Moroccon government did nothing to stop the migrants.

I posted a thread on this mate, They’ve repatriated half, but it’s another quandary in amongst all the pandemic issues.

A free UK on 08:30 - May 10 by onehunglow | Morning Felix I voted to remain as I don't like uncertainty .We were also looking at retiring abroad . Now I'm pretty we didn't as a country vote remain. I wish people wouldn't rip into each other and label each other. We are obsessed with labelling people. |
I don't have a problem with whichever way people voted on this subject and of course it wouldn't make a scrap of difference if I did. I can completely understand that someone wishing to retire abroad to another EU country wouldn't wish to upset the applecart. But doesn't such a statement really sum up the whole thing? Someone wishing to move abroad votes that the rest of us who don't plan to and are going to remain ( excuse the pun) here would have been shackled to the shambolic undemocratic mess that is the EU by someone who doesn't even intend on living here with us to suffer the consequences of unlimited immigration, open borders, laws made in another country and by the rest of Europe etc etc. This isn't a criticism of anyone but just a rhetorical musing. He is just this once correct, the figures were published in the media a couple of years ago as in over 65s per thousand or per ten thousand or whatever. I don't have them to hand. Wales were top of the league for once by a fair distance for older people compared to the other home countries. I suppose a lot more older people retire to a nice house in Wales than do so to Wolverhampton. [Post edited 31 May 2021 17:10]

I'll back up your musing with this, we have left the EU, we haven't closed our borders and told the rest of the world we are shut. People wishing to retire abroad can still do so it's just a bit more difficult now. Personally I would like to retire to somewhere a bit warmer and drier. It probably won't happen...unless we drop the lottery....but if we could afford it I would. I would happily move to a mediterranean island, my wif would prefer Canada or New Zealand.

Canada is lovely in the summer, not sure I’d want to be there in winter. We visited Toronto a few years ago, I wasn’t surprised to see the network of “tunnels” linking all the shopping centres etc. New Zealand is a fabulous place, it’s got everything. It is a long way away but it’s worth the trip.

At least they are deals getting done. The deals within the EU were better and the critics have suggested that the other nations have done better than the UK have but, again, deals are being done.

Increase of 2.3% in GDP is great news and long may it continue, but we aren’t out of the woods yet. A recent a OECD report has put Britain bottom of the G20 economies in terms of recovering from the pandemic. When compared the figure for Q1 2021 to Q4 2019 our GDP is 8.7 lower with the UK suffering the largest drop, Italy, Germany and France were next with reductions of 6.4, 5 and 4.7 % respectively. The US was 0.9% lower while China and Turkey powered ahead with growth of 7.1% and 6.8%. Let’s hope we can build on the April figure and really get things moving.

Could be tough on our food manufacturing businesses to. We have already seen the impact diverging from EU standards has had, for example exports on sausages to Northern Ireland, shellfish etc. We are out and we have to make the most of where we are, but we can’t shoot ourselves inhe foot and put our own people out of business.

There have been no divergence in food standards in the UK.and the EU yet. The problem in Northern Ireland has nothing to do with EU food standards. All imported cold meats were banned from outside the EU previously. As we left the EU we can't export them to the EU. It is just nonsense that we can't send them anywhere within the UK. As for the Australian trade deal the EU has been trying to sort out one for 20 years unsuccessful of course. 18 months after we leave the UK has sorted one out.

A free UK on 09:55 - Jun 23 with 1071 views | felixstowe_jack | So far over 5,000,000 EU citizens have applied for UK settlement status. Clearly they find living in the UK preferable to returning to the EU. Meanwhile the unelected commissioner for media and broadcasting has decreed less UK made TV and films should be shown in the EU as it is watering down their culture. Strange they have not decided to cut down on USA made films and TV. Explain the logic in that. I am sure our friends in the ROI will welcome more Polish, Latvian, Greek TV rather than British TV.
