Stagecoach " we got our sums wrong and we are unable to rip off the customers and taxpayers to the extent that we had originally hoped, please can we cancel the contract ? "

Another failed privatisation for which the taxpayers will pay.

Apparently Virgin are sharing the Franchise. It's a right dogs dinner it seems and it is in a mess. The Department of Transport might have to take over.
Meanwhile on the West Coast line the contract is being extended. Guess who runs that? The answer is Virgin. You could not make it up.
Rail franchise is a failing system that is hopelessly mismanaged by the Govt.
Why don't yhey look at the succesful railways in Europe to use as a template for this Country? I guess it is because all the best system are in Public ownership. That would never do would it?

Sadly Europe has caught the British disease of liberalisation and mandatory contracting out of train services (from 2019). Not many people seem to have realised what the 'competition pillar' of the fourth railway package involves.

I suppose my mention of catching the UK disease may suggest that we are the model, but actually there are plenty of true believers in the neo-liberal project in the EU. Just google 'EU liberalisation' or ask a Greek.

For as long as the same old gang are elected to Westminster, Tom.

It's not incompetence tom. They're doing what they're very good at - their raison d'etre - funneling public money into private hands. The East Coast Mainline was making a tidy profit for the treasury in 2013 with good customer satisfaction ratings. The Tories couldn't have that, naturally, profit must go into private hands.

It's funny, people bang on about the 'deficit' yet this government simply can't wait to sell any profit making public asset into private hands. What a scam it all is.

And we're too busy discussing the semantics of 'isms' to look at what is actually going on right now in this country.

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--forever.

It's corruption , pure and simple. I hope Perch turns up to tell us about how brave people like Branson are, taking risks with "their" money.

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't it the East Coast franchise that failed some years ago only for the government to take it back in house, into public ownership in order to get it up and running properly again.

Then, when that had been achieved they promptly sold it off again, presumably to the current bunch of thieving chancers who have just run it into the ground again.

Personally I find the rail network throughout the UK a bloody good service.

Just as long as you plan your trips outside the cattle truck commuter hours.

The train network in Great Britain runs on tracks that are owned by the public. We take all the strain and the rail operators the gain!

Yes. Another opportunity to shovel millions in public cash to Branson. Corrupt doesn't even begin to describe it.

I am travelling to Glasgow in July. Flying there from Bristol is £75.00 return. Off peak by rail is £322.00 return. About a grand for First Class.
We pay more than anyone else in Europe for our rail services and have to suffer some of the most over crowded trains.

But booking the train at the correct time and split ticketing it can be done for £60 from Swansea and less if you have a card unfortunately I am not old enough yet for the card even if I was I would always fly just because the time difference.

I do agree how cheap the £75 rt on the plane is and we must admit what an amazingly cheap price these private companies do it for.

Arriva is owned and operated by the state owned German railway. Pleased to hear that you're happy with the service.

Where did you get those rail fares from? That journey can be done for considerably less than £322 and not far off your budget airline quote. Plus bona fide first line ticket sellers generally only sell three months in advance. The train almost certainly won’t be as quick when all things are considered but I’m more than prepared to sacrifice an hour or two if it means avoiding airport terminals.

And a point re ticketing prices, there are some real quirks out there and I’ve seen this countless times.

This was an example from a few weeks back - I needed a return day trip journey from Llanelli to Paddington.

Swansea - Paddington - Swansea ticket was £69 (I had considered getting to and from Swansea by car).

Llanelli - Paddington - Llanelli ticket was £119

Whereas separating the journey into two tickets of Llanelli to Swansea return plus Swansea to Paddington return was £5.90 + £69.

I’ve seen similar with Swansea to Newcastle and Bristol to Edinburgh.

I used to do Swansea to London Paddington return twice a week.

Swansea to London was £76 booked a day or two before if I booked 2 seperate tickets Swansea to Swindon and Swindon to London it was £49.

And both tickets bought at the same time at Swansea station on the same train and sat in the same seat the entire journey.
