Cellino's cull of the Leeds legends?
Saturday, 10th May 2014 11:06

According to the Daily Star Massimo Cellino will enrage Leeds fans by axing legends Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer and Dominic Matteo from the Elland Road payroll.

Earlier in the week, it was rumoured that up to 70 members of staff will face the axe in a cost cutting drive and Cellino also plans to close the training complex at Thorp Arch during the summer.

Now it emerges that legends' Gray, Lorimer and Matteo, who are employed doing media and ambassadorial work behind the scenes are amongst those to be on their way out - if the Daily Star is to be believed, a move which will enrage fans according to the paper.

Eddie Gray and Dominic Matteo feature regularly on LUTV, the club's online television channel, however it's existence surely must be in doubt if the club are losing £1m a month?

Lorimer, who's reputation amongst the fans took a hit due to him being a board member during the hated reign of Ken Bates has been hosting the monthly Lorimer's Bar events at Elland Road. Again it remains to be seen if Cellino wants to continue with these under his regime. If they are loss-making then surely their time will be up? Lorimer also runs a pub close to the ground so I suppose he could always go back to pulling pints if the axe falls upon him.

I'm not sure where the "fan fury" the Daily Star talks about is coming from? Whilst the decision, if true to remove the trio from behind the scenes will not be a popular one I doubt we will see the angry scenes that greeted his arrival in January when his taxi nearly ran out of fuel due to being chased away by incensed fans fuming at the sacking of Brian McDermott prior to his hasty reappointment.

Totally agree, it's time to think about the future, we've had to live in the past because the present has been so desperate. I'd rather Cellino spent his money on new players rather than supplement retirements. Harsh, I know, and we'll all always be grateful to the greats of the past but with our finances as they are, we can't afford to be too sentimental.
