Gornell signs a permanent deal with Dale
Gornell signs a permanent deal with Dale

Loan striker Terry Gornell has made his move to Spotland a permanent one, after he completed a transfer to Dale on Thursday.

It had been clear that Dale boss John Coleman was keen to retain Gornell after his two months on loan at the club, and that switch was made a permanent one on Thursday wth Dale paying an undisclosed fee to Shrewsbury for Gornell's services.

The one surprise with this deal is that the contract he has signed at Spotland will keep him at the club until the Summer - especially surprising given that a fee has been involved in the transfer.

Gornell has done well in his loan spell at Spotland, scoring five goals in eight appearances. The only blight on his time at Dale was his red card against Exeter for kicking out.

Since the manager has indicated he urgently needs to sort out the defence, I do not see how this signing can be seen as value for money, when a fee has been paid to keep Gornell to the end of this season only. Surely that money would have been better spent on improving the 3rd worst defence (only AFC Wimbledon and Bristol Rovers are worse) in the division.
