Alright you bird lovers? 15:05 - Mar 7 with 2384 views | Mick_S | The suns out so I’ve been walking around my garden. Lots going on, the feeding stations are being used non stop unless the dog is out there, so it’s looking ok. I’ve been on the internet wondering whether to clean out the nesting boxes, and guess what? It’s a yes or no thing. Yes, get rid of the potentially harmful parasitic stuff. Empty the dwelling and soak it in boiling water. No - leave it, it’s what birds do in a non garden environment (generally). I don’t know the answer, I’m thinking of just leaving things as they are this season, but of course, the internet has confused me. What you lot reckon?

Thought any avid birders here would appreciate the current visitors to my feeders. They include 4 Lesser Redpolls, 3 Blackcaps, 2 Siskins, 1 Goldcrest, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, 2 Greenfinches, 3 Chaffinches, a Bullfinch, Sparrowhawk plus many Goldfinches, Tits and all other usual suspects. A bumper year here in deepest Hampshire. Now for the footie! |
Seriously, that is an impressive list 👏 I haven't seen any greenfinches for years - there is a disease which is currently affecting their numbers - and I think I've only seen redpolls twice ever. One of the reasons we chose our current house is that it has a mature silver birch in the back garden. That brings in quite a lot of birds, including some unusual ones; we once, briefly, had a visit from some waxwings.

I've seen them using it previously but last year it got taken over by a small nest of bumble bees. I've never cleaned it out.

that's a great variety, must be lovely to watch. Last summer we had a good collection visiting, including a sparrowhawk, which quickly became a poor collection visiting and one very fat sparrowhawk... Reminds me of my old neighbour who decided to start keeping rescue chickens. He started with six, three weeks later he was down to three. So he added six more, and additional predator-proofing around the roost. A few weeks further on however, back down to a total of four. I pointed out that, far from keeping chickens, he was in fact keeping foxes.
Alright you bird lovers? on 16:08 - Mar 9 with 195 views | Boston | Walking through forestry early this morning and just as I was emerging from the tree line, a bloody great owl flew right past me. Unusual sight during daylight, maybe the clocks going forward (over here), last night caught him / her out.

I have cleaned out the used nests each year but have not done the boiling water thing. All have been occupied every year. Our wood pigeons eat everything we put out on the ground but are the weediest birds ever. They fly off at a moments notice. The pheasants don’t care though. They just carry on eating. There is a family of woodpeckers that use the feeder mounted on a pole (the wood pigeons can’t reach it). Also chaffinches, great tits, blue tits, various finches etc.
