Yet another musical star has left us, vibraphone player Roy Ayers. Rest In Peace Roy and thank you.

A few of my favourites.

My first ever gig! Roy at Ronnie Scotts in 1988. Was only 14 and quite the eye-opener.

RIP Roy

Love this tune:

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

Saw him a couple of times in the 80s at Hammy Odeon, he really was an entertainer.
Once as part of the New York Jazz Explosion in '85 where he was one of four acts (Lonnie Liston Smith, Tom Browne and Jean Carn) and absolutely stole the show, the other solo a couple of years later. Superb gigs both of them.
RIP RA

Ah no, love Roy.

Got to see him once in the early 90's at a Jazz Bop in Brighton in a fairly intimate venue. The Roots played before him then they all came on the floor and piled into the front where we were to watch Roy, flinging themselves about like the rest of us.
He got everyone to sing the chorus to "Sunshine" along with him. I'll never forget that moment. Beautiful.

Go well brother. Peace.

I was there, Cambers. A wonderful night and I kept hold of the t-shirt that I bought that night for many, many years.

I can’t remember where I saw him next, but his father passed away on the day he was due to perform. Show went on, of course. Big Cyrill Regis and his mates behind us.

Top funk.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

The Field Marshal of all Funk. Roy Ayers.

'He's a Superstar'.. I First heard this in the rare groove club 'the good, the bad and the ugly', next to Selfridges back in '87 as a 20 year old wet behind the ears essex funkateer, fed on the Tony Blackburn/Steve Walsh cud of baby milk formula radio London soul nights out.

Good clean family fun. With whistles.

I was Totally unprepared in every way for the Oort cloud top tier of the Funk and Soul elemental.

I almost passed out, overdosed on filthy raw funk tapped to the vein via roy's chugging bassline spawned from the 7th rung of hell.

No man born of gods 4th rib should have possessed such gifts that could render a man down to his knees at his funk/soul tabernacle.

A ridiculous track.. The funk keeps stacking until it's almost unbearable.

A Faraday cage of funk in totality.

He's A Superstar.. yeah.

Rest In Power.

Back then Tony Blackburn/Steve Walsh/Greg Edwards was better than nothing! I think the pirates, Radio Invicta, had finished by 1987?

Tony and Steve I would see them in Bluebird Records. I remember being in Bluebird with Tony when Midnight Star's No Parking On the Dancefloor album came in and the shop all listened for the first time. We all loved Wet My Whistle and repeat played.

Greg Edwards was a personal fave -- "you gotta get up to get down"

Lyceum and all that.

Closely followed by Mike Allen who took things a bit more electronic, rap and hip hop

Superb

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Gosh, back from hols and just seen this, bit heartbroken. Such a big part of my 20s and 30s (in the '80s and '90s) when in love with a couple of girlfriends (not at the same time). Saw him many times at Ronnie Scotts and Jazz Cafe, a truly wondrous individual.

Been bugging me for days since his passing, but if anyone remembers the whole Duffer of st George/ Talkin' loud/Dingwalls acid jazz culture of the early 90's , all the Talkin' Loud label artists were heavily influenced by Roy Ayres..

Sampled to high heaven..

Seen the great man a few times over the years and he never failed to entertain.

I’m throwing in this collaboration track as the vibes are sublime as always.
