Beatles..your favourite track.. 23:13 - Feb 28 with 5459 viewsDiscodroids

Back in the wilderness years , (before i re-trained for  6 years to become a  probation officer), as a non marine reinsurance broker/alcoholic/coke addict , i was at my 48th consecutive day of NA meetings ..

so there i was in the bermuda triangle of booze, gear, and bullshit city 1989--2008 sitting there mute. in a crumbling church at a na meeting..stupefied into silence by the demonic delusions of grandeur and ego of those in the semi circle with me earning £250,000+ in chalk stripe and gold card lunch expenses in leadenhall market.

at the end of the meeting feeling lower than Karen carpenter doing the limbo, the sponser pulled me aside and told me the story of' Dear prudence' by the beatles.

Humans are capable of great things. it changed my life. It will be played at my wedding. And i will remember where i was in 2008. people change, give them a second chance to prove it.

the Beatles cross the great divide of every generation.

Not saying it for effect, but I just don't get it with The Beatles.

Arguably over promoted compared to a lot of bands (I mean their rise to popularity was unnaturally stratospheric) - you can also read up about their links to the Tavistock Institute and Theodor Adorno, if you're of a tinfoil hat persuasion

But can't deny they came up with a few decent tunes!

So many to choose from, I love the Lennon-dominated '64-'66 era but if I had to choose one track I go back to time and time again it would be George's "If I Needed Someone". Great track all told, and killer three-part harmonies to boot

Please Please Me, is still my favourite Beatles track.
I bought the original LP and played it to death.
Probably the album, with original sleeve, is worth a bit.
I wondered where it was and recently discovered, my younger brother has it, and he says, it is his now

Impossible to choose one, so I'll try a top five
And I Love Her - perfection
Eleanor Rigby - redefined the possibility of what popular music could do
A Day in the Life - astonishing work which never dates
Here, There and Everywhere - another masterful ballad from Paul
Paperback Writer - Great lyric and guitar lick to die for

Of the solo stuff, I love Lennon's soulful 'Isolation', and McCartney's brassy 'Letting Go'. Never warmed to George or Ringo's stuff much tho, although 'Isn't it a pity' wouldn't have been out of place on a Beatle album.

Ooh I don't know I really like George's album All Things Must Pass (which I only got into recently).

It certainly grows on you, but it's very uneven, and has one too many plodding dirges for my taste. But it's the lyrics that do it for me - all that hare Krishna and simplistic eastern spiritualism - obviously very 'him' but ruins it for me, I'm afraid.

I think you need to have Ian GillHard Days Night at left back to save Gently Weeps having 2 jobs?

Did the Magical Mystery Tour in Liverpool a couple of weeks ago. Very good info and not bad value for money. Regarding tracks, A Day in the Life is a particular favourite.

They certainly made some crap songs, often from Paul's "granny" catalogue. Others, especially the early singles, haven't aged well. But the best track? There's so many to choose from. My personal favourite is Strawberry Fields Forever which, to my mind was extraordinarily inventive, especially for its time. I was outraged when Englebert B****y Humperdinck (Release Me) prevented the SFF double A Side (with Penny Lane) the first Beatles single since Please Please Me from being a No.1.

The live version by Wings is one of my all time favourite songs. The question does have to be asked though….is this a Beatles song? The same could be asked of my earlier post of ‘Step Inside Love; a song never intended for the Beatles and never performed by them.

Me too. It's definitely not a Beatles' track, but would have stood up well on any Beatles album. Many of Paul's Wings era songs were much better sung live when given sufficient 'beef' by Jimmy McCullough & Denny Laine on guitar and Joe English on drums. I saw them in 1976 and it was a truly great show.
