Play Offs? Dream on 21:13 - Feb 15 with 5818 viewshopekillsyou

Dreaming of the playoffs? As the table below illustrates, that’s probably what it is…dream on…

Championship 6th place team by season

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

18-19 54 Middlesbrough No 74 Derby 54 7th
19-20 53 Preston No 70 Swansea 48 11th
20-21 52 Bournemouth Yes 77 Bourne’th 52 6th ( Bournemouth promoted)
21-22 53 Huddersfield Yes 75 Luton 52 7th ( QPR 5th after 33 with 53; finished
22-23 51 Luton Yes 69 Sund’lnd 49 8th. 11th with 66)
23-24 54 Hull city No 73 Norwich 51 8th
24-25 48 WBA ?

Col 1: Season
Col 2: Points of 6th place team after 33 games
Col 3 : Club in 6th place after 33 games
Col 4: Did this club make play offs?
Col. 5: Points of 6th place team after 46 games
Col. 6: Club in 6th place after 46 games
Col 7: Points of final 6th placed team after 33 games
Col. 8: League position of final 6th placed team after 33 games

It’s a mountain to climb for QPR to get to the play offs. Our 44 points total after 33 games is lower than any other similarly positioned team in the last 6 seasons ( Swansea had 48 in 19-20 and achieved an impressive 22 from their final 13 games or 2.46 points/game).
It’s possible but highly unlikely. But strange stuff happens very occasionally.

Absolutely no way we can get 2 points a game. It’s 3 for a win. 1 for a draw. And 0 for a defeat.

So having put that one to bed, seriously, previous seasons are a good guide but look at the situation we’re in here and now. We’re 4 points off the play-offs with 14 games to play and we’re playing good football. As I see it there’s 2 play-off places up for grabs and there’s about 10 teams involved in a mad scramble for those places. There’s not much between those 10 teams and 1 of those teams is us. March will be a tough month but maybe in our favour as we can have a good April and build momentum going into what could be a crucial May. A curious one is what will the motivations be of the opposition in our last 2 games? Burnley Home. Sunderland away. They could already be up or already qualified for the play-off but mathematically short of automatic. They could be resting players, playing young squad players. Or on the beach with Chris Rea. Could be a key factor in our run in.

if we win 8 and draw 2 of the last 13 games then we will average 2 points per game

We absolutely have to go for it now, and have to believe that we can.
This is our best chance in years, and may be our best chance for years to come.

Cifuentes has been here for three transfer windows and he's still working with an unbalanced and wafer-thin squad. There's no guarantee that he hangs around for another window and another season of turning water into wine. He's got his career to think of just as Dunne had last month. If Cifuentes goes, that's a gigantic setback.

We have to go for it now.
That's why Friday night was so exciting: that was a team still at full throttle.
We're not done yet.

Exactly this, what have we got to lose, this defeatist attitude that we can't do it is madness.
Blackburn are 5th and we just beat them, a Coventry side we should have beaten the other night are only a point off it now
Lets try and win every game and make it an exciting end to the season.

Watford have a very kind run coming up now off the back of facing Boro at the right time. They’re soft as anything as we know but can imagine them being right up there in a few weeks if their better players have decided they fancy it.

I thought the same, but Warfords form is garbage. I actually fancy Coventry in that list to take one of the places.

We're QPR. We win the tough games and lose the easy ones (last week aside). Do that against a bunch of the teams in and around us and you never know.

Our odds are long for a reason, it's unlikely. But it's FOUR points, not twenty. Technically we could be in a playoff spot by this time in a fortnight (not suggesting this will actually happen but shows that it's not exactly a chasm of a gap)

We have the worst GD of all the sides looking for 6th which is why I was a bit miffed that we didn’t go for the jugular in Friday , keep Frey, chair and Yang and we were good for 5 or 6 IMHO

13 games to go.
7 of which are currently in top 10
4 of those 7 against the top 4

We'll be close, but no cigar. Think we'll finish just short, 8th or 9th unable to recover after the early season meltdown.

Same will happen next season.

No chance of playoffs.

We have to play all the top teams now, and we won't beat them all, especially with the dire standard of refs in this league.

This is all a guess but ...

What we can hope for is a secured mid-table finish and early on so, that the management team can plan top improve the squad and team tactics for next year. Move Madsen on at a loss, but at least free up some funds for investing in a proper forward. Possibly move Celar on as well.

Bring in Saito on a free (but no doubt signing on fee), a RB (assuming Dunne is off) and yet another go at a CF like Frey. LB seems to be secured early with Dale and that Brazillian U19 guy who can play both fullback positions it seems.

We shall keep Cook as he's shown he's still class and does not miss many games, even when injured. Colback and Andersen are not adding whole season value when they get injured or don't play well enough so, they will be out. The wages they free up are immense. Let's hope that can be used to secure Dunne's renewal. But I doubt it or I suspect we would have heard that by now.

As we have to sell every year, I suspect we can get £1m for Kelman and possible some money for Celar and Madsen (yeah sure we shall lose on those deals, but what we do get for them can be invested). Which might mean we keep Chair for yet another year. Otherwise we shall have to sell Chair, as what other player assets do we really have that any other club would want?

Absolutely no chance you get £1m for Kelman. Even if you could, he’s out of contract so will be moving on a free.

Shifting across from said thread given the title of this one.

If you measure All the results, you are correct over the course of the season.

However, I think I referred to how we play (rather than if we win) but that all comes down to how confident we are and how we can set up to play against teams that expect to beat us. If those teams try and play more openly, e.g. Leeds at the end of last season, we can raise our game.

Given the current form, why not go into those games with the same approach rather than trepidation that the early season will repeat itself.

If we are measuring the results from early this season (rather than recently), granted we were poor against many teams. Whilst the results against the better teams were not good, in the period up to and including Boxing Day, I think we also lost to:

Cardiff, Portsmouth, Derby, Hull and Swansea.

And we could only draw against:

Stoke & Plymouth

I think those were the results that really cost us, rather than losing to the better teams. Just five from the above and we would be in 6th, even with the current GD.

As we now have nothing to lose, I hope that we try to dish out out some bloody noses from the front foot.

I assume Marti thinks along the same lines or the loan players probably wouldn’t be starting and I don't mind if we lose to better teams, just as a long as we give it a go and play with the ambition to beat them.

Look, I'm a millennial, so there's nothing I can't bring back to a Simpson's reference. But I recall the Frank Grimes episode where he tries to make fun of Homer winning a children's science contest and Lenny replies "Yeah, and Homer beat their brains out"

Beating that Derby team means little; pulling their pants down and smacking their bottom was a statement of intent.

I feel it is useless to point to historical precedent when it's clearly a weaker than average year. There are 2 play off spots very much in play imo. Will it be hard for us to get one of them? Yes, but we're only two results off. If we keep playing as we have been I see no reason whatsoever that we can't be in the mix...oh i'm gonna have to start doing the spreadsheet again aren't i

There's 2 ways of looking at that fixture list. The negative outlook is to think that with 7 of the remaining games against top 10 sides, we're toast. The positive outlook is to think that matches against teams above us are essentially 6-pointers so winning those gives us a better chance of making the play-offs than beating teams below us.

FWIW I think the poor start has left us with an outside chance of making it however, whilst there's still a chance we should go for it.

One step at a time.......beat Pompey and its another 3 points to move us up the table. We then move on to a home match against Sheff Utd after a weeks training.

Top 6 is not out of sight(yet).
