I'm beginning to think maybe he isn't that great after all. Is it time for him to be dropped?

Good to see you can read Begovic’s mind.

Well it isn't hard, is it? It is so darn obvious.

I'm impressed you can still keep on defending him - you are definitely a better supporter than me.

I'm afraid I just can't stomach the fact that these veteran players come and go, perform terribly, then wipe us from their memories. Or blame QPR for being a basket case when they are there.

A la Rio Ferdinand, everyone else in that side, bla bla.

And the cost of living crisis, the middle east crisis, any crisis

I just think his footwork was poor for a shot from some way out nowhere near the corner. It’s fine others (most probably) disagree. For the second I’m less critical as there’s no good option. He gets slaughtered if he stays on his line there.

Yes I think Begovic was just fine until about mid-season but got a lot of abuse on here anyway from some posters. More recently he has made more errors and looked more hesitant, maybe not so sure if he should come out for a cross or not for example, uncertain whether to come out or not for that 2nd goal or not at Hull and perhaps delayed it. I don't know maybe he's just getting old like all of us, but he could of read or heard of the unecessary abuse and his game suffered from it which of course doesn't help us. He got nearly all the blame for his flap at Plymough, while for me Albert was equally at fault for not reacting quick enough and clearing that for another corner. Hope he's not getting it at the games.

Unless there are QPR fans posting at Chelsea forums or texting Chelsea podcasts, I doubt he is reading or hearing any abuse.

As you’ve said before you have an irrational hatred of goalkeepers.

You have no idea at all what Begovic is thinking or feeling about QPR: he’s no longer a good keeper but he’s clearly a professional and our lauded manager supports him even if you don’t.

True, but I don't hate goalkeepers. I just don't think they are very good. I never understand why they jump out the way of penalites rather than just trying to save wherever the shot goes, for example. I think they should save pretty much everything. I believe Gary Neville has said the same.

And I speak from extensive experience - U9B school side keeper, FIFA97 player.

I won't buy your Marti argument though - although if we were mid-table I would put a long-dead Fatty Arbuckle in goal instead of your man Begovic, in this situation you would have to be a certified Paul Hart to go with an untried youngster. He has had no choice, surely.

None of us ever have any idea actually what the players are thinking, but we take clues, no? We may be right or wrong. Eg if Boswinga laughs leaving the pitch, if Field and Chair run around all day and look in despair at the final whistle, or if Begovic makes a dreadful rick, posts on his twitter flogging stuff an hour later, or goes on Chelsea podcasts saying "we". That gives me a clue.

I may, of course, be wrong, but 'tis how I feel.

Ah, but Shilton was 142 at the time.

Bosnich was a good penalty saver and he took his cue from Big Fat Ron's advice I believe, which was to just try and save it as you normally would in open play.

Clive should try and get an interview with Smithies and ask him what has secret was....

Nix - re the first one...I do a lot of kids football coaching, and for several years one of my colleagues was a specialist GK coach who is now head GK coach at Sunderland, having previously held the same position at Leeds and Notts Co .

I remember a long discussion with him about just this after I saved a shot using the technique AB did on Sat. I did it instinctively, so then asked him about it - afraid I can't remember the detail of the reply, but he said it was the 'right thing' to do, there was a very good reason why keepers go with the right hand in a situation like this (I think it was something to do with getting much more spring to improve % chance of reaching the ball). . I've watched out for it since, and the majority of pro keepers do it.

Thanks. That's helpful. If that's the case then I take it back. Always willing to reconsider!

What do you think about the positioning for the second one. Was it a no-win?

Carraghers excellent dissection of Martinez's performance at Arsenal this evening really once again shined a light on what I’ve been banging on about since the day MC walked through the door.

To paraphrase Carragher, “when you have goal keeper who is brave and confident and joins in the play, especially higher up the pitch, it gives you a huge advantage over the opposition. You are effectively 11 v 10 at that point “

It’s the reason I think MC will hopefully have a goalkeeper lined to come in. Begovic only plays the ball left and right from inside his 6 yard box but if he pushes his players up and it did outside his box it pushes the team 20 or 30 yards up the pitch .
Comes with risks of course and that’s why I understand why Begovic doesn’t do it . But MC needs someone to play that way to make his way of playing much more effective. At the moment his hands are tied with Begovic there .

I am sure we will be able to sign the world Cup winning keeper for about 90 million. Noticed Pickford made a huge mistake last night to set Chelsea on their way. Also the Burnley keeper has cost them with huge mistakes in their last 2 matches. Not many decent keepers around.

MC has made a huge difference to minimise these distribution errors from Begovic which have virtually eradicated the clangers in recent months where he has made allowances for his lack of speed. Occasional booting into the stands happen to most keepers.

Begovic will be gone soon and it is getting exhausting defending him against ideas of perfection and his Chelsea connections.

I just hope we can find a decent keeper but we are so far down the pecking order in financial terms that I doubt we will be able to. Rotherham keeper looked decent but he won't have gone unnoticed by richer teams.

Perhaps he went there with a bag of itching powder and a clutch of stink bombs

On a serious note, that is pretty dim. Surely he must know, or have been told, that Chelsea are our bitterest rivals? I'd like to think that a warning to play down any Chelsea connections is in our code of conduct, but then I am a hopeless dreamer

Yeah, I know we are meant to be grown up and it doesn't really matter and Chelsea blah blah, but if I was Nourry - it is something else to look at to improve the general standards around the place.

We are a proud football club, and that does not involve our captain sticking pictures up of being at games of any of our rivals. I know I have "no idea" of what Rejectovic is thinking, or how professional he is, but I don't see how this benefits anyone and just advances the narrative that we are little old QPR and ooh look at the big guys over there. You don't go to your competitors' office parties, do you? Or if you do, you don't stick pictures on social media about them and call them "we".

In what world is that a good thing?

Bang on this^

I suspect he gets more £££ rolling into his business by posting stuff like that than he does from his salary at QPR. That's the only reason I can think of.

You miss my point slightly .

If you think I’m suggesting we ‘should’ buy a keeper as good as Martinez then you certainly have.
It’s not really a criticism of him either. If you read my post back I say I understand why he doesn’t come and join the play. It’s a style of goal keeping that he is too late for but it’s why MC can’t play in the complete way he wants too. That’s not a criticism per se of Begovic it’s just a reason why we don’t play further up the pitch at times. I just suggested that MC will probably have 1 or 2 keepers lined up who are relatively unheard of cheap but can play the way he wants them to in full.

I’d be more concerned that you think it’s your duty to ‘keep defending him’.
Unless you are a relation or a friend then of course I’d understand. If you are then fine. But if not then you have to accept that others , most nearly everybody else has a differing opinion to yourself.

Shilton still used the same tactic as a younger man in 1974 and still wasn't getting anywhere near them. Have a look at this from an England friendly against Argentina in 1974. Mario Kempes' shot is hitting the back of the net pretty much before he moves. 5:34 in on the video...

I know people say professional footballers are "in a bubble" but surely it isn't one hundred per cent soundproofed?

Penalties. I remember being told it’s all about the knees. The knees (as in the penalty-taker’s knees) don’t lie and if the keeper can understand knee body-language it give’s a big clue as to which way the ball will be kicked.

Idiotic advice. It's like in tennis: returners are reacting in some way before the ball is hit to clues about bodyshape etc - otherwise they'd stand no chance against big servers. Keepers need to read and anticipate as - and I can't believe some actual managers didn't know this - they do with almost every shot.

Bare bones.

Well, of course, but doing what all QPR keepers bar Smithies do - ie guessing wrong and leaping out of the way of the ball, is also idiotic in my opinion.

That's my point, don't guess beforehand or go on some stupid analyst's stats - judge (just, as you say, they do in open play) from the run up and so on.

Unless it is Julian Dicks. Then just run out the way.

I haven't seen this, but if true, it's the last straw for me. We're in a relegation battle which we would have been out of if not for his flappy hands, and he is, for better or worse, the effing captain of this team. WHAT THE ACTUAL FK IS HE DOING AT A CHELSEA GAME - in the home end, cheering them on? Can you IMAGINE anyone else doing that? I'd actually be tempted to drop him for it and i'm surprised there's less chat about it on here (people probably, and rightly, bored with the Bego thread so haven't seen it!)

I was willing to overlook the podcast to a degree, but this is too far. I won't be booing him on Saturday as we need a positive atmosphere, but I cannot wait for him to fk off.

Bare bones.

Totally agree, its a disgrace, remember Lee Clark doing similar, Begovic is our captain and we're in a battle, yet he's there cheering them on. If we go down by less than 2 points its on him for the flap (I wonder if he has an issue with his eyesight under floodlights, but not the point here) If I was Marti I would drop him for it, it would send a strong message about the club.
