Free Beer……….. 09:10 - Jul 3 with 3603 viewscolinallcars

Upon opening my paper this morning, my eyes were drawn to an article which I thought said free beer but was actually alcohol free beer.
Apparently sales are rocketing with Heineken market leader because it tastes like the original. A good reason not to drink it say I.
Anyone had any reasonable ones ? They say Guinness is OK. The only one I've had is Ghost Ship which tasted nice but thin.

0% Doom Bar is quite good

Guinness is the best of the few AF beers I've tasted but I know many who don't like it.

AF Heineken? I'd rather poke my eyes out with a sharp stick.

I tend to think they're not bad for the first couple of sips, but by the end of a can, the synthetic nature of them is impossible to ignore. Very hard to have two, but when I was hard dieting to get rid of my post-Covid binge bulk, Heineken Zero out of the freezer was able to fool my tongue for long enough for the craving for a beer to go away.

Never liked Heineken but had some in Holland last summer and was a really nice beer, tasted completely different to the one they sell here

Guinness 0 is decent, if a tad sweeter than the regular one.

The best "low or no" beer I've had is Brooklyn Special Effects.

imo it's best to go specialist though - both Big Drop and Nirvana Brewery have very good NA/Low beers in a rage of styles. My teetotal uncle in law swears by Big Drops 0.5% milk stout

I tend to buy from Infinite and they have a decent range.

I've drank quite a lot of Lucky Saint, when trying to reduce my alcohol intake or doing a dry January and that's not been terrible.

Nanny State - Brew Dog IPA zero is not bad - wouldn't want a session on it though!

Guinness 0% is good. The various Big Drop beers are again very good and better than the bigger brewery offerings, and the stout is outstanding. Not keen on the Doom Bar, Ghost Ship is fine, and the Low Tide IPA is decent as is the Speckled Hen Blue. The various Brew Dog, Nanny State and Punk AF are decent.

Much better offering nowadays, but the pubs are still way behind the curve ball, with many offering the Becks Blue which is utter p iss.

Whatever the virtues or taste of 0% beers, what about the frickin price? A mate was drinking a bottle of San Miguel 0 outside the Salusbury pub in Queen's Park last week (I think it was San Miguel), so I asked him how much it cost. Five pounds 25, he said. You've got to be kidding me. I mean seriously, WTF. There's no feckin tax on them like booze, is there?

I tried some Peroni 0 over the weekend. It was all right for the first few sips, but the more I drank, the worse it tasted.

Guinness 0 is good... if you're not a Guinness drinker.

Agree with all of this, except the milk stout, which is not for me.

Corona 0% with a slice of lime is pretty decent if it's ice cold.

For anyone looking to reduce their intake but not go alcohol free, Small Beer do a couple of excellent IPA at 2.4% and 2.7%.

Suffering since 1978.

I went through most of them a couple of summers ago when I was attempting a summer on the wagon. Becks Blue was okay - has to be very cold though - just about gives you that aaah! hit of a cold lager.

I tried the Guinness thing recently. First impression: texture (I believe it’s called mouth-feel) was convincing (at least on a par with conventional canned Guinness) and the taste was similar but then the top notes gave way to an acrid aftertaste of nail varnish. Red nail varnish. Come on we’ve all drank nail-varnish at some point in our lives. Not nice.

I might try drinking some nail varnish - there's a nail bar just up the road.

19.08p per percent of alcohol per litre for beers between 2.8-7.5%, so a third of a litre bottle at 5% would be 19.08 x 5 = 95.4 divided by 3 = 31.8p plus 20% VAT = 42.39p.

It's great that the government recently simplified alcohol duties.

Only ever tried Guinness zero and its not good. Couldn't finish 1 can. The first mouthful is pleasant but there's an odd aftertaste that gets worse and worse as you plough through it until it becomes undrinkable.

If I want alcohol free at home I have a glass of water. When I go out I want a proper beer. This fad will last as long as veganism has.

Infinite IPA is my beer of choice after Guinness Zero.

Cobra Zero isn't bad - if a little gassy - and I also like Erdinger Alkoholfrei Alcohol Free Wheat Beer.

Brewdog can go and fúck themselves in the árse with their píss until they haemorrhage themselves to such a degree they end up looking like they're doing the splits.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

I don’t think either is a fad. Both are lifestyle choices. Vegans have been around since the beginning of time, AF or small beer, since the medieval times, it’s just both have massively picked up as the choices and quality that both offer now has increased massively.

Indeed. And veganism is a globally growing movement which shows no signs of slowing down.

You need to do a double check on vegan offers in shops and restaurants. Manufacturers like Heck have dropped their offering from 10 items to 2.

That might be because people adapting to vegan diets are moving from tasteless faux meat and dairy products to food made from real ingredients.

Another vote here for erdinger, I really like it as an option at home alongside plenty of alcoholic beverages.
