David Attenborough show kicked sideways to iPlayer

What times we live in

I know almost nothing about the Premier League even though I try to catch the big games every now and then at the end of the season. But I will say this, Queens Park Rangers is just a fukking sick ass team name. Just sounds so cool.

Point being, that unless his contract states he may not use social media to breach BBC guidelines - which it obviously doesn't as BBC have said in their statement "that he will step back from presenting Match of the Day until we've got an agreed and clear position on his use of social media" - then the BBC don't really have grounds to ask him to "step back". Certainly not the grounds they are citing anyway.

Whatever your views on the rights or wrongs of what he said, the BBC have got themselves into an almighty mess here, and having set this precedent, it won't be easy to avoid accusations of impartiality for almost any presenter on any program if people start digging into their social media history, or if they are not 100% clued up on the veracity of any statement that any guests make, particularly those presenting political programming.

Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation. The BBC have drawn a line now...and they will have to apply it to everyone. So many more important things to worry about...and we all get our kickers in a twist about this. I'm declaring this MB a non politics safe- house for me personally. There is enough of it everywhere else 🤔Anyway who cares when we win 😉

While it might not be an express term of his written contract, which would be a massive, and I have to say unlikely error, on the Beeb’s part, then I’d be even more surprised if the wording of his contract did not refer to the binding nature of associated policy and procedural documents such as: disciplinary rules and procedures and policy on comment/neutrality. Additionally, it could be argued that there’s an implied contractual term to remain neutral given who the employer is.

More over, Lineker has been spoken to before about his tweets, so he can’t be surprised that this tweet - however relevant it may or may not be - has caused the Beeb an ‘issue’.

Not saying everyone on Twitter is a cant, not even saying Lineker is. But everyone who is a cant is invariably on ever social media forum possible...I agree with the poster above who berated social media, for it’s ruining way more than it’s benefiting!

Absolutely agree re social media. I don't really participate in it, rarely use it, and genuinely don't understand those people who have let it become dominant in their lives and the way they live it.

You may be right about his contract. I spent years drawing up legally binding agreements and my feeling is that if the contract was explicit enough, there wouldn't be a need to get to "an agreed and clear position on his use of social media". It would already be clear. If his use of social media has previously been a problem for the BBC, then how the position hasn't previously been addressed, agreed and made clear is beyond me.

In that instance, I'd expect the BBC message would be that Lineker has been suspended as a result of a breach of his contract. The current BBC messaging doesn't suggest to me that they feel they have any firm control over any of this.

What pisses me off is Fiona Bruce is allowed to defend Stanley Johnson - his breaking his wife's nose is apparently a one off - on the Beebs flagship political debate show, as a political journalist, whereas Gary Lineker can't mention politics in his personal social media as a sports journalist.

I guess it makes a difference who you're actually criticising, doesn't it?

I was under the impression Fiona was an ambassador for domestic violence so very odd she should put up any kind of defence for this. Does make you wonder if the government is influencing the media in making excuses for anyone linked to them for any wrong doing.

Both things are wrong. Fiona Bruce shouldn't have defended Stanley Johnson, Gary Lineker shouldn't be tweeting political stuff. Presumably Fiona Bruce's comment, although wrong, sounds like it was spur of the moment, rather than going out of your way to comment politically when you really shouldn't be

One of the best strikers ever to play the game and now earning over a million quid a year as a presenter. But a few right wing flag obsessives don't like his opinions.

I wouldn't mind being that kind of idiot.

She was at work, he wasn't. Should be able to tweet anything he wants about politics in his personal capacity just like everybody else. I see far worse from the other side on Twitter every single day.

I’ve not read this thread, and I’m not getting into the politics of this, but here’s my standing

Gary Lineker was a hero of mine as a young un - his England goals brought me a lot of joy.
Then I learnt about the man off the pitch – a long time before he started eating crisps, got political and came out as black (caveat - switch on your sarcasm humour radar for that last bit)
He is an odious, selfish, self centred, smug prick.
I felt that way when learnt of his behaviour towards his wife, Michelle, when his baby boy George was having his Leukaemia treatment. His actions over two decades ago are not isolated and he’s proved himself untrustworthy and disloyal on many other occasions allegedly.

He’ll be loving the attention

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

She was defending someone connected indirectly to the current government, who's been an elected UK official and who had done something indefensible, as a political journalist on a political show. What she did was clearly much worse. Personally I think someone minimising domestic violence isn't comparable to someone attacking UK policy on asylum seekers, whatever your political views. There can reasonably be a range of views on the latter, there really shouldn't be any scope for differences in opinion on the former.

Her actual job is to think on her feet. If she can't do that effectively then she shouldn't be on the show. Personally I've never rated her and can't understand why she gets so many top jobs. Maybe who she knows?

Just listening to Andrew Castle in LBC and he has stated that he was working with Lineker on Thursday and during that time his phone was going ballistic, so he asked him whether he regretted writing what he tweeted and he admitted he went too far. Apart from his work with the BBC by all accounts Lineker has a very successful film company and also a successful podcast company, which no doubt he has developed from the training he has received from a PSB, funded by all of us. And for the record he is directly contracted and paid by the BBC and not through a production company.

And with regards to the immigration issues let’s not forget that the majority of the illegal immigrants that came across last year were from a democratic European country, which is outside of the EU. Albania. Those people are not looking to be sent to Rwanda but instead flown back to Albania where once they arrive they will remain free and not persecuted. They are economic migrants and not political. Their lives are not in danger if they stayed in their own country. Now compare this against a friend of mine who came over from the Caribbean to study at university for three years and is now in her second year of an extended visa to work after which time she can apply for indefinite leave to remain. She has developed her career but she is also married. Her husband remains in the Caribbean. He cannot obtain a visa as a dependent which would allow him to come across and work. He is a god fearing individual, no criminal record, because of his religion he does not drink or take drugs. He has in the last couple of years trained to become an electrician in his own country. But he cannot get a visa. To be reunited with his wife. This is where the UK’s immigration policy is wrong.

It’s staggering to realise some don’t even understand the difference between seeking asylum and immigration. It’s like comparing tomatoes to turnips.

Given the dearth of tomatoes in the shops and the government position on turnips, you’re probably closer to the reality than you think.

I posted the potential for this several pages ago.

Just watched the morning broadcast...it’ll do fine; shut the studio noise and show the footy. Save a packet too.

Think the Beeb has handled it so poorly, that I’m beginning to think it’s deliberate. A way to make huge cutbacks.

Lineker is not a news presenter but it seems is expected to abide by the same impartiality rules as them due to his "high profile."

So presumably Alan Sugar is low profile as he is free to tweet his political opinions. Strange, given how the corporation keeps renewing his series.

Likewise Jeremy Clarkson - ok, we're talking a few years back, but was he low profile when, as presenter of low profile show Top Gear, he suggested striking workers should be shot?

That, surely, is at the heart of why this decision is so wrong. No consistency in application of the policy.

The difference is that Alan Sugar said for years he voted for Labour and then changed to Tory at the last election, a pretty run of the mill comment.

Lineker on the other hand branded the current government as Nazis. When you've got "anti-hate" groups patrolling around attacking people with slogans like "the only good nazi is a dead nazi" and going out to "punch a nazi", it's not really the sort of comment that someone on millions of pounds of taxpayers money should be making. Don't forget a Tory MP got murdered a couple of years ago by a Somalian and this sort of rhetoric is going to make this sort of thing more common. Lineker isn't stupid and knows exactly what he's doing here.

Clarkson actually said he agreed with the strikers and they should get more money. Then he made a joke about how because of the BBC impartiality rules he has to say the exact opposite and then made the joke about shooting them in front of their families. Of course the BBC then endlessly repeated the second part without the first part to generate controversy that they could then report on breathlessly.
