I watched the last episode of line of duty and thought that was good. Undercover has finally grabbed by attention. I quite like some of the investigative programmes Stacey Dooley does. However I can't wait for the next series of people just do nothing.

Up to episode 6 and it's good but I haven't laughed. It's not really a comedy, more a satirical look at what the Gods could be like in a more modern day setting. It helps if you are up on your Greek Mythology as you will recognise certain characters without them being formally introduced which would otherwise pass you by.

Goldblum as Zeus is the standout, reminded me of his performance in The Fly. A solid 7/10

It is trying to be a satire on today's religions in our society right now.
It feels like we are supposed to compare it to our world today and see that these religions are stupid to follow, even if true. That's supposed to be the clever bit. What happens if all the Gods are true, and yet we find out it's still shite anyway.

Greek mythology is used to avoid upsetting today's religious people, who don't connect the dots and, if they do, can dismiss it as different (which, to be fair, is totally true; it is not the same).

It doesn't really work, as the reason we don't see the three main religions today in the same way is that these religions are a society's improvement upon the religions that came before them (Greek, Roman, Pagan, and others). So, one cannot make the comparison really stick as Greek mythology is way different and way more stupid.

All it shows is how stupid Greek mythology really was, but you cannot translate this to today's major religions as the major flaw in Greek mythology is that they had too many multiple gods, demi-gods, half-breeds and also Titans (who seem to be monsters). On and on it goes. Crackers.

Whereas most of today's religions (not all) usually only have the one god, one devil and possibly a few monsters, most of which are conveniently dead today so, no need to worry about em. Hindisum and possibly some others may get upset about this show, but I doubt it as it is very Westernised and on purpose.

I find it interesting to learn about obscure aspects (to me anyway) of Greek mythology, but it's not very entertaining. It's more like a series of Horrible Histories about Greek mythology than actual History.

zzzzzzzzzz

I haven’t watched The Batman but the first episode of the The Penguin is really good. I had no idea who was playing the lead so googled while watching, I never would have guessed! If you don’t already know who plays him then watch it first. It’s on Sky Atlantic.

Probably late to the party again but quite enjoying Bad Sisters. Plot is fairly implausible but it's fun and the acting is good.

Watching two utterly different series at the moment, both are absolutely fantastic - with some reservations:

Firstly: Ludwig on BBC iplayer. This really tickles my particular funny bone; it's about an autistic problem solver, played by David Mitchell, who has to impersonate his twin brother - a DCI in the Cambridgeshire police force - in order to find out why he's disappeared. First episode had me in stitches, as well as intriguing and delighting my puzzle-solving geeky mind.

Secondly: The Rings of Power - season 2: I have very mixed feelings about this; as an unashamed Tolkien fan, the series tramples roughshod over so much of his incredible legacy. The opening of The Silmarillion includes a letter from Tolkien to his publisher, where he explains the part-supernatural origins of his cosmology, in that he 'channeled' the story. But its amazing detail - the background and history of Middle Earth preceding the Lord of the Rings - comes from his long scholarly research into ancient European history and languages. As a result, Tolkien created something that feels as real as any other history, something that has a deeply spiritual dimension. And for those of you who don't know about it, Tolkien imagined an entire creation myth from the very beginning, with existence starting with the godlike music of the spheres, bringing into being an amazing cast of characters, such as the immortal Elves, and the Istari (a race of wizards who reincarnate, including Gandalf), as well as a whole host of languages from Elvish to Numenorean, and an entire and detailed history spanning hundreds of thousands of years, with a whole slew of different races, including various human tribes, as well as Orcs, Goblins, Dwarves, Halflings (Hobbits etc.), Ents and many more.

So..... this series might best be described as a reimagining of Tolkien's Middle Earth pre-History (as opposed to the 'based on' it uses in the opening titles). But if I get past me wincing at some of the liberties the writers have taken with Tolkien's legacy - including lifting, verbatim, lines of dialogue and action sequences from Lord of The Rings - then I have to concede: it's utterly brilliant. An incredible, sweeping spectacle that takes you to dizzying heights of imagination and story-telling. Without Tolkien, this wouldn't exist, and he's probably turning in his grave, but the writers and director/s have created something amazing here, with extremely clever (sometimes subtle, sometimes irritating) references to our modern world-view, yet framing them in a mythical context. If you're into fantasy epics, this is extraordinary.

Yeah I'm a sucker for most stuff David Mitchell and his lovely wife do, so have recorded Ludwig. Good to hear you enjoyed the first episode.

The Mr Mcmahon doc on Netflix is very good for anyone who watched wrestling and plenty there for those who don't, a fascinating insight into American culture and some real dark stuff on the steroids, owen hart, Benioit and the latest sex scandal, not much I didn't already know but a great watch

Four Kings (Amazon Prime) steals the title of the book about Duran, Sugar Ray, Hearns and Hagler for a series about black British champs Bruno, Benn, Lewis and Eubank. It’s great nostalgia, but I’m surprised how much they show of the Watson and McClennan fights, the first I saw on TV at the time, the second I’d never seen a second of. The interviews are great: Lewis is a smug prick, but fair enough with knobs on considering what he did and still has, Bruno and Benn are doing a fair job of doing it tough, and Eubank…is still Eubank, I’m delighted to report (fingers crossed).

Only Murders In The Building, Season 4. Forgot how good Martin Short was, steals every scene he is.

Great support cast as well, including Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep.

Just discovered the original Twin Peaks is on Paramount+ and watched the first two episodes. Not seen it since the early 90s. Got to be one of the best and strangest dramas ever made. All the characters are just so spot on and of course there's Audry Horne. You can just smell those Douglas Pines.

Will give that a twist, thanks to your reccomendation.

I'd steered away from it because I disliked all sides involved back then, but I should watch it.
Thanks.

Also on BBC iPlayer is ‘Surviving October 7th: We Will Dance Again’
Absolutely horrendous what those at Nova Festival went through that day: also refreshing to hear those responsible for the atrocities called terrorists throughout as opposed to the BBC’s usual ‘fighters’ or ‘gunmen’.

Tonight BBC4 and iplayer at 10.00 a reshowing of "Threads" first shown in 1984. No idea if it stands the test of time, but was a harrowing watch back then. I did wonder if it was the start of the end of the cold war.

Yep, thought Banshee was really good when I watched it a few years ago.
Also very good is a Korean cop drama from 2016 called Signal on Netflix. It has elements of Life on Mars and Waking the Dead but isn’t a straight copy of either.

Cannot recommend The Penguin enough. Very competent writing, superb acting (especially from Colin Farrell who I still can't believe is under that make up), and a great Yojimbo like mobster storyline. The young chap playing Vic in it is sensational, as is Christin Milioti who portrays Sofia Falcone. Only three eps in but I'm hooked and really hope it doesn't drop off towards the end.

I'm rewatching The Last Post. Set in the early 1960s, for me it's a pitch-perfect drama series: only 6 episodes long, brilliantly scripted and acted, with beautifully shot, stunning landscapes (Cape Town standing in for Aden) - in the last violent death throes of the British Empire. It has so many resonances with what's happening in the world right now, particularly the Middle East.

Jessica Raine (in particular) and Jessie Buckley are mesmerising as the wives of the officers in the Military police. But every single actor in this cast is spot on. This is tense, sexy, evocative and moving drama of the highest order.
