The Stripes Are Back In Town
Friday, 18th Jul 2014 22:31

At last Saints supporters walking around in their team shirts will be able to be told apart from the hordes wearing Liverpool, Manchester United and Bristol City shirts.

Saints fans have their chance to get their hands on the new striped kit at 9am on Saturday morning when the kit goes on sale at the Club stores in Westquay and the Stadium plus online sales.

There are sure to be queues outside the shops for what looks set to be one of the most popular kits for a few years.

To quote from Saints official web site

"The style which is synonymous with Saints from previous generations has been given a fresh look with this smart and eye-catching kit"

That just about says it all, yes red & white is our traditional colours, but its also the colours of many other teams, the stripes are what distinguishes us, indeed makes us distinguished and that should always be the case.

At £49 my one gripe is that the price is too dear, however season ticket holders can get 10% off by showing their season ticket, if your season ticket hasn't arrived yet don't worry just bring along the receipt and for a limited period this will be good enough for you to get the discount.

NB The club is also advising that this seasons shirts are more tailored than last seasons Adidas product, this means that they will be a bit tighter so it could be advisable to try one on before buying, especially if you are getting it personalised and won't be able to exchange it.

Stripes don't distinguish us from Sunderland, Stoke and Sheffield Utd (to name but three) !!

Why do we want to look like Sunderland, Stoke or Sheffield Utd?

It`s more a case of Sunderland, Sheff Utd, etc, etc wanting to look like us surely. We are the most superior British team with a traditional red & white stripe kit after all. I`ve always looked upon Estudiantes De La Plata, Athletico Madrid & PSV Eindhoven with effection. Their kindred spirits. As are Athletico Bilbao & Olimpiakos ( but we`re better than those two). Whatever our kit was, we`d resemble someone else. I`d rather be grouped with these teams & River Plate ( the red diagonal sash) than say : Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd.

The only way forward and to be unique in English football is to fully adopt the red sash as our home kit from next year onwards. With black shorts this time though to retain red white and black within our colours. Would anyone at the club have the balls to make such a decision; probably not but with this permanent change we would distinguish Saints identity from all other home shirts in England.
