Shaw Set For Move To Old Trafford Friday, 27th Jun 2014 09:14 Luke Shaw is set to leave St Mary's and head for Lancashire and the bight lights of Manchester United.
According to press reports Luke Shaw is going to undergo a medical today prior to signing for United in what is being described as a deal worth between £30 -40 million to Saints depending on what paper you read.
What is clear though is that this is a deal that Southampton Football Club are keen to do at that price, not because as some seem to think that they are keen on making money but due to the fact that they know from previous experience that it is better to do deals early in the summer rather than later and that applies to both outgoing as well as incoming transfers.
By getting the big deal of the summer done and dusted Saints are now able to concentrate on replacing Shaw as well as bringing in the players that they are after in other positions.
The transfer window is a little bit like buying a house, you can't buy your new one till you have sold the old and the fact that Saints are about to receive somewhere north of £30 million means that they are able to get in quick with their targets whilst other club's may not have the money yet.
Of course it is a blow to lose Shaw, but this is modern football and players no longer stay for long periods at a club, the trick is always to sell a player when his price is inflated and either have his replacement already in house or lined up.
It was always going to be hard to keep Shaw, not only has he ambitions to play for a big club, but the wages on offer would far exceed anything Saints would be able to match, yes of course there are some that say we should have, but the stark reality is that too many football clubs have gone down that road, we only have to look at Pompey to see that, what we want to do is build a stable club that is able to grow and compete in the Premier League.
So good luck to Luke Shaw hopefully yet another Saints player who has been part of a successful conveyor belt that stretches back 50 years since the days of Ted Bates.

Sad to see Shaw go, but with the money on offer to him and SFC it was always going to happen. Loved watching him play last season; he was undoubtedly our biggest attacking threat in many games and he has the speed and defensive technique to go far. I'm sure his mind was made up well before Mr Koeman arrived. I wish he had stayed at least another season; how he is replaced will be one of RKs first major decisions.

I wonder how much influence the England 'experiance' and the people involved with that persuaded Luke he should be at a 'big' club.

Worshippers of the Dark Lord need to be reminded that the 'if NC had have stayed none of this would have happened' line is nonsense. NC chose to go because he didn't wish to be overseen by those who provide the cash and MoPo was totally out for himself. We were NEVER going to keep LS and AL. Those supporters who want to create a ridiculous counterfactual around a happy NC, MoPo and all the rest going on to win the league are living in a fantasy universe - and one created in the main by the rubbish that NC has been talking since he left. Of course we are all disappointed at the partial break-up of a very promising team but it was inevitable and we need to move on. I preferred the league in the old days when you could dream about the likes of Saints, QPR, Ipswich (who actually did it) winning the league. But it is not like that anymore. The Dark Lord fantasists would have probably broken the club, no money in the world would bring the talent to St. Mary's that would be needed.. I saw a good line in the Echo comments this morning along the lines of "Let's not argue about a disaster that hasn't even happened yet" - apologies for the misquote if whoever said it is reading this. Remember - who had the last laugh, us or Hoddle???

I do not share the excitement on this forum that this is a great move and a good bit of business. I know my views will be at odds with many. This is about SFC cashing in, plain and simple. If anyone really thinks a large portion of that money will be used to reinvest in players and good players then they are deluded. We will get some players or one or two, no doubt but they will be largely foreign players that our new managers knows who will readily move on as soon as he does with little or no attachment to the team. There is no doubt that financially £30m or whatever for a player who just over year ago was barely on the radar outside Southampton and who has had one good season does help the club's financial situation. It will be music to the ears of the board. But, what does all this say. I am disappointed with Shaw. One good season, not even out of his teens and immediately jumps at the first opportunity with SFC seemingly quick to rubber stamp the move. You see the club saw the money, they didn't see the player or what his worth is to the team or the future of the team longer term. Their attitude is, don't care how good he is, lets grab the money whilst we can. What has been pointed out during this world cup and been covered copiously. The problem with the England game are players who are average out to make loads of money and clubs selling them and then bringing in average players from abroad. Apart from Lovren what other foreign player has made an impact to Saints in recent years? What does this message say to future managers, to players? That we don't really harbour ambitions of success it is just about survival. Yes, you could argue that youngsters may see Saints as an opportunity because they will see the players that have developed and then left quickly with big money moves. It is a bit like recruiting someone at work, spending thousands on them for training and courses and then they b*gger off to some other organisation who benefits from the effort you have put in. This is not a good move for Shaw or the club, it is short termism at best with no long term vision and it won't be the end. Yes, we will have a team and we will cheer them on and want them to win and celebrate when they score and moan when they lose but whilst our strategy is, build them up, develop and sell then we will won't build a lasting team who feel committed to the club. Good teams and good clubs do not get rid of their best players as soon as someone waves a cheque in front of them. For all the rights and wrongs of Pochettino's decision, I suspect this is why he left

No, this was an offer noone could refuse. It's an insane amount of money for a player who still has a lot to learn. It's enough to buy at least two or three decent players. Or maybe they think they already have a replacement in Matt Targett.

Let's be realistic, a club our size has to take the money and 30 million for an 18 year old is great business from Southampton. While an exceptional prospect, Shaw was an excellent defender but contributed little in terms of assists due to his final ball and decision making in the final third. I believe the sale of Lallana and Lovren will affect us more. As Nick alludes to, a replacement could be signed for 10 million or under and of a similar current level leaving us with a 20 million profit. While it’s a shame we are unable to keep hold of our young talents and build around them it seems we must accept this will not be possible in modern football.
