| News Comment | Saints At Arsenal The Verdict at 17:08:52
To repeat the majority of comments on this blog, Davis has to go. Of course it would mean brining in Gazzaniga who is a rookie, but would that be really any more risky than keeping Davis between the sticks??! There is also the realisation that at his age, Davis' performances are unlikely to improve. I'm not saying a goalkeeper can't cut it at 36 (look at Brad Freidel, 41) but at least when Gazzaniga makes a mistake, he can learn from it and improve. When KD messes up, it's because he's not good enough anymore. I'm still optimistic for the season but to state the obvious, we have to tighten up at the back. If we continue to leak goals the way we are at the moment, we'll need our attacking players to find 3-4 goals every week, simply for us to register a victory. It might happen once every so often, but it's not going to save us from the drop. |
| News Comment | Footie Traditions That Modern Technology Has Erased ! at 13:33:27
Interesting article Nick. I only started following football in the late 80s so I have no experience of scrums to buy newspapers. My memories are more Radio 5 and Ceefax which were crucial for the majority of the 90s. The tension was almost unbearable when you were listening to a game on 5 Live (not involving Saints) and the commentator suddenly says '....and there's been a goal at The Dell....'. You knew that either sheer elation or disappointment was about to take over. And remember when Match of the Day used to be worth watching on Saturday night. One of my mates used to live directly across from our local at the time, and if there'd been a particularly exciting afternoon of footy, we'd often all duck out of the pub at 10.30 to go and watch MOTD. Nowadays, half the games are on Sunday/Monday, and you'll have often already seen the goals from the lunchtime/5.30 KOs, so it's barely worth tuning in. Whilst it's fun to reminisce about the days of nerviously waiting for the Ceefax page to flick over to the Saints score, overall I'm grateful for the internet and Sky coverage that exists today, particularly during our recent stint in the Championship/League 1. |
