The King's speech?
at 15:59 25 Dec 2024

As a regular receiver of ‘could have tried harder’ autumn term school reports, I would say at least he tried (a little) and acknowledges some of the failings/possible areas of improvement.

Self awareness is the usually the first step to getting better so maybe we will see more regular communication and updates now. I’m not holding my breath but it’s a decent step in the right direction for now and if it’s the start of a comms strategy, that’s got to be better than radio silence on some of the subjects discussed here.

Maybe most telling will be whether or not we get another update following the window and the end of the season, before the summer holibobs and next phase of contracts.

Cook?

I don’t think he’s the type of player that needs two people supporting him to leave the pitch unless it’s serious and need some decent recovery time. He can probably concentrate on the landlord duties for a while - maybe even a guest shift at the Saracens Head is on the cards.

It does give Morrison some development time alongside JCS (potentially), which you would hope is the future pairing plan. I think he’s naturally right sided so theoretically, it’s his better position (much better than working on current home deliveries and turning those pesky computers on and off repeatedly ahem).

Let’s just hope JCS stays fit now, although deep down we know he probably won’t sustain as long as Cook has to date. Whilst I appreciate Fox’s effort and his attitude, I suspect he’s neither the longer term plan or the right mentor/partner.

I don’t think anyone expects him to be as good as Rice (or any other cereal for that matter), but a few more ‘maizey’ runs and taking more ‘corn-ers’ would help. Warbs could have baked him into his squad overnight and sold him fresh the next day…

The observation was simply that there are lower level Prem teams with (sometimes significant) money to spend on these types of players and given some of the price tags, they are seemingly in short supply, so there’s potential - if he develops, if his contract allows and if he stays injury free.

Better potential for us than having a great Goalie that might only fetch a couple of million, because he’s a great Goalie, as we have seen.

What did Adam Wharton sell for ? Something around £20M maybe.

Again, I’m not saying he’s that good or even remotely comparable at this stage, only that there’s a solid market for similar players at the types of clubs that buy from QPR and that’s a good thing for all concerned.

Whether he (and we) realise the potential is another matter.

I guess it depends on his contract situation and if he stays fit for the remainder of the season but he’s got the right ‘brand’ name, potential and attitude for a step up where the transfer value could be significant.

When you consider what Rice, Caicedo and other CDMs went for not so long ago, he will be on a few radars, especially at lower tier Prem clubs with more limited (but still relatively high for us) budgets.

Crystal Palace, West Ham, Brighton etc.

Preston Reflection

There’s that damn, blasted hope - it’s loitering with intent again….

I think it would be good to see where we are after Norwich away and then take stock of the season to date.

If the performance and possession stats continue at these levels, then I would hope that we have turned a corner. Then there’s a January window of potential for further improvement to possibly enhance the return from injuries we have started to see (cross fingers we can manage the returnees back carefully).

We are, after all, effectively in yet another three game week and Preston were not great so we can assume the next two away games will be a big test, albeit with the incentive to rise above both of them AND really put Norwich back in their box, in front of their fans. That would be really satisfying and perhaps more significant for the remainder of the season.

Makes a huge difference to the result AND the entertainment/engagement of the fans, who have experienced some seriously challenging and ‘unentertaining’ (does that word exist ?) guff of late.

Well done to all involved today and good luck with the recovery, Cookie. We’ll miss those last gasp blocks, the leadership and the banning orders for misbehaving strikers that mistakenly stray into his battle cruiser.

I was hoping Marti would play Morgan along with Varane and Field a few games ago and it seems to have paid off.

The three of them are very complementary and we’re a more dynamic and competitive team with Morgan pushing on.

It frees other up to contribute and just look at the possession improvement stats.

Son of a Gunn !

I imagine a scene lifted from The life (and wife) of Bryan on Saturday evening back at the family house:

Why don't you go and tell him you want to be a ‘keeper again?

Ex-‘Keeper:

I could do that. I could do that I suppose. What I was thinking was I was going to ask him if he could make me a bit lame in one leg during the middle of the week and just the games under lights

You know, something beggable, but not leprosy, which is a pain in the ass to be blunt and excuse my French, sir.”

Indeed, I did read the disclaimer and used the word ‘assuming’ when referring to the data being correct. Clearly they are estimates.

I generally take what I read with a pinch of salt, especially when looking online, but it's a data product company that sells (a large variety of football) data commercially (hence the CYA disclaimer should someone use it incorrectly), so I doubt that they made the whole thing up. I would also expect that the 'free' data is based on more accurate data that is paid for and supplied to 'professionals,' given the charges they quote.

There’s probably a + or - % of tolerance built into each estimated salary they publish unless they have seen every contract, but when you look at the list for context (assuming every data point has a similar tolerance), you would expect that the ranking/order is probably indicative of status, at least when compared to the other players.

My initial point was really that I hope there would be some form of extra payment/incentive for Kolli's performance, given that he appears to be underpaid. Perhaps he earns a bit more (or even less) but in relation to other people it appears that he’s probably undervalued and I guess that's possibly a source of the issues we have seen with social media posts from the father.

I also thought it would be useful to have some form of view on contact duration going into January, as it’s a question that crops up time and time again. Again, I expect there are some gaps/issues/inaccuracies too but it's a starting point for when the inevitable contract questions start again.

Madsen's 5 year contract appears to be somewhat of an exception according to the table and that may help explain why he has started so often.

Sam Field or no Sam Field?

It would be good to see Varane, Field and Morgan start together as a three but that would require a change in system and most likely the dropping of Madsen, which may be two decisions, too far for managerial autonomy.
