I do think there is an element with Kosky of being the first to shout B'stard and then when the wheels do finally come off can say I told you so.

I also think there is some rose tinted views held by many of the wilderness years, where I remember it as the club being constantly under threat. When we did come into money its the club is under threat. The club seems to have been "under threat" for the last 12 years

I'm sure if the internet had been around there would have been those who slagged off Jim Gregory.

"I've been standing on the same pile of mud for 25 years what do I want with a new fangled stand?"

And can you imagine the debates about Stan Bowles?.........

Well, let's not get into Smalling, shall we? Was playing for Maidstone, the General Manager of Maidstone recommended him personally to Hodgson, you took him, he played a few times, then before Maidstone could be due the nice small payment they deserved, you shipped him to United for a fat profit and refused to even give Maidstone a few measly grand that would have made a tremendous difference as they fought to get back into their town. So, you know, take Smalling out of that, because you got very, very lucky there.

I suppose Smalling now has enough money to make a nice donation to Maidstone Utd.?

he is a qpr fan just very disillusioned with the last two boards at qpr

Is this reporter seriously a rangers fan?
I find it remarkable how he can be so negative about Fernandez.
Unless he needs to somehow justify his salary by filling columns.
Oh well..... he's got us talking the b*stard!!

Meet me by the railway track

Smalling was with Millwall as a kid, left there, went to Maidstone for a couple of years and according to Wikipedia played 12 times for them whilst still playing for England schooldboys. He then went to Boro, but came back down south due to home sickness and joined up again with Maidstone. He wasn't under contract when we signed him, but we gave Maidstone £10k as a goodwill gesture with more due after certain numbers of games. They were publically happy with that at the time.

He played about a dozen times for us where he looked great other than through an unfortunate habit of having at least one blip a game, which would see a goal or penalty conceded or an own goal scored. Man Utd offered us the best part of £10m and with Hangeland and Hughes as an excellent CB pairing, we took the decision that £10m for an untried CB was too good for us to turn down. Maidstone then started moaning that they should get a slice of the transfer fee, and yes, it would have been a nice gesture (such as when we let a skint York keep our half of the gate receipts in the FA cup), but the club decided against for whatever reason. But Maidstone weren't diddled out of any money they were due.

And I could be completely wrong with this, but I reckon he probably developed an awful lot more as a full-time player at Fulham through our Academy/Development side and coaching and then the first team squad and under Hodgson, than he did as a part-time player at Maidstone.

Would be better if he organised a friendly to inaugurate Stone's new ground.

Poll: So how was the season for you?

You`re pretty much spot on there Konk. The only mistake Maidstone made in the whole Smalling saga, was not to get him to sign a contract. That was mainly down to the player himself wanting to play for England at school boy level.
But what left a sour taste in many Maidstone fans mouth`s was it took a complete overhaul in the owners, and an investment of 2.5 million to put right what had taken 24 years to destroy. It`s a shame, but it is one of many reasons i find the premiership a little hard to stomach, when figures like 10 million etc are banded about.

Mr Sharp(Of Maidstone)

Whilst I like Fulham being in the top division, at heart, I'm more interested in the lower divisions and non-league than I am the "elite". I hardly ever watch PL or CL games on the telly and find the PL hugely boring in many respects - I read the lower division reports before I read the PL ones, and I hate the fact that we no longer read out the lower division scores at Fulham.

I'm glad Maidstone are back in their own town - I've only seen them once and that was in Dartford many years ago, and as with Brighton and Chester, it's great when a club gets to go home - a proper reward for the loyalty and efforts of a dedicated support. I'd like to have seen us gift Maidstone a few bob, but the club decided not to.

No.
He was playing for Maidstone and was offered to Millwall before you. He went there, trained there and was, for some inexplicable reason, rejected, and went back.
You barely had him for a few months so don't start saying you 'developed' him in any way. You didn't. You got lucky, although at least Hodgson had the nous to spot something that Millwall couldn't.
I know this because I happen to be very good mates with the Maidstone GM, which is a bit more reliable than Wikipedia, is it not? I don't doubt he improved playing with better players and coaches at yours, but it was a bit rich putting him on your list is all.

Bare bones.

I am very sorry for thoughtlessly putting Chris Smalling on a list of players that had come through at Fulham. He was part of our youth set-up before graduating to the first team, but was at Maidstone before that. I wasn't meaning to imply that he'd been with the club since birth, but was simply listing players who'd graduated from youth team football to the first team at Fulham. Do we count Giggs as coming through at Man Utd even though he was at Man City until he was fourteen and joined United? Or is he a product of United's setup?

I'm sure he was at Millwall as a school kid, because I know a Fulham fan involved with their youth set-up and he said as much when Smalling was first training with our first team. This is taken from the Daily Mail (sorry) when Smalling signed for Man Utd:

"After showing promise in the local Medway leagues, Smalling joined Millwall when he was 12 but travelling to London proved too much by the time the player reached 14.

Ms Smalling, a single mum, didn’t have a car and, although Millwall offered to help with the costs, she didn’t want her teenage son travelling on his own.

‘We just couldn’t get up there,’ she said. ‘He would have been perfectly capable of going on his own, but I wouldn’t let him. I had to take him out. He didn’t play football for nearly a year.

‘I was more upset than Chris, I think. He just carried on and worked his way up, playing for school and then Kent. He really put himself out there.’

That's from his Mum, who hopefully knows what she's talking about.

PS. He was part of our Development squad and then trained as part of our first team for about a year and a half from memory, playing about a dozen times for the first team. Not exactly a lifer, but more than barely a few months, I'd say (how long was he with Maidstone?) In terms of his development, maybe I'm underestimating the quality of part-time, school kid coaching going on down there 5-6 years ago, but I'd imagine he learnt an awful lot more at Millwall and Fulham than he will have done during his similarly brief time at Maidstone.

Sometimes I just wish that he hadn't come along which would have forced Tango and Cash to sell to the Mittals.
