Thailand advice please... 16:38 - Jul 1 with 10112 views | WarfieldHoop | As usual whenever I go on a trip I always consult our intrepid community on here, this time I am heading to Thailand at the end of the month. (Not for the pre-season tour) I shall be flying to and from Phuket spending a short amount of time there with most of the holiday being in Koh Samui. Any advice on things/places to see, do or not to do and general tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
Thailand advice please... on 19:16 - Dec 3 with 1978 views | timcocking | Patong is awful, thousands of hookers. So you might love it or hate it depends what you're after. If you cross the bridge off Phuket and drive to Phang Nga for an hour, there are several national parks stretching for hundreds of miles with actual wild elephants, tigers, bears, you name it running around the jungle with limestone hills and huge lakes and no tourists and empty beaches around khao sok, khao lak that area, all beyond awesome. That's just if you wanted something different. You can stay in these cool floating bungalow things on this lake in the jungle...so fcuking beautiful. Real Thai people around there. Just so great. No nightlife though. Or, take a boat off Phuket out to the islands. Just sp beautiful. Phi Phi if you wanted crowds, maybe Koh Lanta if you don't. Easy cool ferry ride, cheap. Too many places to list. If you're in Rawai, come say hello. Quite frankly, Koh Samui isn't as varied or good, but it's still great. Ps It won't be monsoon season in Phuket, it'll be boiling and sunny every day.
Thailand advice please... on 20:35 - Dec 3 with 1944 views | queensparker | Had an incredible lost month in Koh Samui and Ko Pan Ghan in 1993. Never been back to either island since and imagine it’s a bit different now! On the off chance nothing has changed in 25 years have a drink in the Reggae Bar on Chaweng and the “cookies” in Pok’s bar in Lamai will send you to Neptune and back on a 12 hour trip to a higher state of consciousness. The full moon parties on Ko Pan Ghan were full on In all seriousness Thailand is one of my favourite places in the world, amazing food, beautiful scenery and friendly locals (with a steely side, don’t take the piss). You’ll have a great time

'In all seriousness Thailand is one of my favourite places in the world, amazing food, beautiful scenery and friendly locals (with a steely side, don’t take the piss). You’ll have a great time.' Is all correct. Lived here for approaching two decades, it'll probably always be the best country in the world imo. Thais are such lovely people, but don't ever underestimate their gentle kindness and tolerant nature for weakness. They are a fierce race if somebody tries to take liberties and they'll fcuk you up if you deserve it. But if you are smiley and polite - man they are awesome i love them. Anything you want, send me a message.

Thailand advice please... on 19:28 - Jul 1 by dubaistu | I've just come back from getting married in Koh Samui and have travelled throughout Thailand both west and east coast. I've stayed at the Indigo Pearl in Phuket which was quality at the time having just been re-built after the tsunami. We took a trip down to Patong which isn't my scene, Phi Phi was quite disappointing. Not sure who you're going with or what interests you have when in Koh Samui, but you're a short boat ride to Koh Phangan for a full moon party or a different experience from KS. If you like diving then Koh Tao is a little further away but still very good. Try and get a boat trip into one of the national parks, they truly are stunning. Have you booked hotels? If not I can recommend either top end or B&B which are equally as good as each other depending on what you expect. A friend owns a hotel in Lamai so I could help you here if need be?? Lamai is slightly more slutty than Chaweng but both have their own attractions in the evening. Waterfall 2 is nice and they do the elephant rides there also. Get a moped mate, only 150 baht a day (£3) so you can get around. If you have a dark side, I will email you about some other stuff you can get up to when you're there ;-) . You'll have a great time and always eat the street food which for a fab curry or phad thai will cost you £1. Barter with the locals, it's all part of the game, don't pay more than 150 bhat for t-shirt for example. Whilst I can direct you to some fun, one simple don't is get caught with drugs, wear a condom and don't bother choosing a fight with a local, they're locked and loaded and there will only be one winner. |
"If you have a dark side, I will email you about some other stuff you can get up to when you're there ;-) ". Obviously something to do with buying cheap replica Chelski shirts gag RFA

Thailand advice please... on 13:34 - Dec 5 with 1547 views | TGRRRSSS | I used to see Warfield about a bit back in the day and am still facebook friends but not spoken to him or seen him probably since before the initial post tbh (time flies) What I can say from the odd facebook is I think he's living in the far east now and possibly married to a Thai girl. Not 100% on that but I think it's fair to say he enjoyed the local friendly Thai welcome back in the day.
Thailand advice please... on 14:13 - Dec 5 with 1515 views | BklynRanger | The wife and I are going to Thailand in March. Looking forward to it but we've had a bit of trouble figuring out where to go outside of Bangkok. We wanted to go up north but t'internet is adamant that it's burning season and too smokey to bother. I think we've settled on Koh Lanta, based on our desire to avoid hoards of young people, parties etc - I know it's all relative and we're tourists ourselves so it's a bit rich to want to avoid other tourists but there you go... Any thoughts or advice welcome. (I see you've recommended Koh Lanta further up Tim...)

For me, up north is great, but there is no way i'd not want to be in the sea every day. No sea up there. If you're looking to go with the missus, Koh Lanta should be perfect. It's a Muslim island (they don't approve of the girlie bars), so nice and peaceful, nothing whatsoever like Patong. Still a few cool little bars scattered around. There's a club in a treehouse, pretty cool. Scorching hot every day in march, the ocean will be around 28 celsius. I'd strongly recommend hiring a scooter if you can handle it. Dead easy. Not too much traffic on Koh Lanta, big enough island to go exploring. Life isn't much better than exploring a Thai island with you're lass on the back of your bike. Safe and friendly everywhere generally. Much better than being restricted to taxis. Thai taxi drivers/tuk tuk drivers are renowned as being a) about the biggest rip off in Thailand and b) frequently the rudest, most aggressive and likely to get you killed Thais (them and the katoeys, who are often dodgy and just best avoided imo). There are other nearby tiny islands nearby if you want to escape literally everybody. You can just go island hopping, jump on and off ferries at your leisure. No real need to book rooms or boats, just move on as you wish. Accommodation always easy and reasonably priced. Phi-Phi islands are close enough to visit easily from there as well. Built up and busy with young folk, but still about as spectacular as the world gets. Probably the world's best spot thirty years ago. They didn't decide to film The Beach there for no reason. Filthy now, but still amazing in a different way. Without a doubt worth a look. If you fly into Phuket (i don't think Koh Lanta has an airport?), do try to make sure it's a daylight flight with a window. So awesome. The boat trip to the islands is always great anyway, especially for first timers. It's the best area on this planet. And if you end up near Rawai, let me know. Ps Koh Chang is also cool. That's east coast. You can get a mini bus and a ferry from Bangkok. Another big island, still a little less developed. It's definitely quieter and nicer than Samui, still with some nightlife. West coast beaches are much better, though. [Post edited 6 Dec 2018 4:37]

Thailand advice please... on 09:59 - Dec 6 with 1357 views | BklynRanger | Thanks Tim, you're a fine ambassador for your adopted country. Last night we booked one of those houses on poles in Lanta Old Town (think that's what it's called). Will spend our time eating, sitting on the porch staring vacantly at the horizon, and scootering to the beaches. I'm ready to leave now.
