Ashby is 23.

According to his Soccerway profile (which tends to be up to date) over half his league football experience has come with us:

https://uk.soccerway.com/players/harrison-ashby/525304/

17 league appearances for us out of a career total 33.

So in plain English he hasn't played very much senior football. Certainly less than a player his age ought to have.

I don't know if that was his decision or the Premier League clubs that are supposed to be developing our young players, but if they insist on hoovering up all the best prospects they should be doing a better job with their career progression.

I agree the hoovering up of players is an issue. Take Sam McCallum who was decent for us at LB before his injury. Hardly started for Norwich the following season - just 16 times - now at Sheffield Utd and hardly starts there. I thought he was a good prospect but how can he develop with such limited game time?

But rich. Which, again, is half the problem.

On the other side, Spurs realistically could have done what Newcastle have done with Ashby with Morgan. But they sold him to ourselves as a young man and he is getting game time five years younger than Ashby has.

I should imagine Ashby - being at a rich premier league club like Newcastle - will have earned a lot more than Morgan will, by the time he is 23, but Morgan has a greater chance now to have a better long term career as things stand than Ashby.

He played in recent wins over Watford and Luton. Are you saying he played no part in those wins? Mad overreaction from so many. I could understand it if we were in the middle of a terrible run but we've been doing so well. Why so much negativity?

You did watch the game yes??
He makes the same mistakes week in week out regardless of whether we've won or not. It's just that the teams we've beaten didn't punish those mistakes.
He was awful in the first half and was responsible for the nail in the coffin 4th, both for letting his man run in behind, and then having his arm waving up in the air to handle the cross.
He clearly thinks he's better on the ball than he actually is. What he actually is, is a liability.
Had he been hooked (with a couple of others) at half time like he should have been it could well have been a different outcome. Saito is also a waste of time and playing one in front of the other is asking for trouble.

Santos is the alternative.

That's where we are at for a back up right back.

I suspect we are not playing Santos so we can say during the summer that he hasn't settled in his looking for a new club. Rather than he's absolute dog s***.

Defo, they are forcing Santos out.
Santos like Madsen in the RB roll, does not defend, does not attack. Shirt warmer, despite having some crossing skills (which is why they signed him as a RWB).

Ashby did set up some goals for us (Frey, Watford) and also played LB when we needed (see how bad the club handled Larkeche there).

But he makes a lot of mistakes as well. He does try but really he's no better than Kakay and probably at the same cost. He should go to L1 club and play 40 game there and develop before coming back to the champ. I will guess after this season, that is exactly what will happen after two failed loans at Champ clubs.

I shall upset people and say, I bet Morgan can play RB. I know people won't wanna read that, but if Dunne is forced in the middle can we afford to play Ashby at RB, when we have Colback to come in for Morgan?

Needs must and all.

zzzzzzzzzz

As far as I understand it Spurs didn't benevolently sell him on rather than add him to their puppy farm and loan him out. They dropped a brick and released him to our benefit.

Meanwhile Ashby will certainly have earned more at 18 but as you say Morgan will have learnt so much more already playing regularly at Championship level. Development football is nowhere near as fast or physical. You can see how even Varane has taken time to adapt and he was playing professional football before. Ashby and Madsen just don't seem to have been able to adapt.

It's a lot to do with character. Take Dunne, released by Man Utd, went to Burnley and played a couple of games, but leaves for us as he actually wants to play the game.
Ashby, refused a new contract with West Ham, where he was highly rated, and signs for Newcastle. For the money?

I get players make mistakes, but he isn't ours, let him make those mistakes in the Newcastle development team.
We have shot ourselves in the foot regarding recruitment in the right back spot.
I can't believe there is not a right back in the lower leagues who is young, affordable and we can't develop.

Yes, I read that Spurs released him, and that Bradley Allen told Rangers about him.

Another happy Allen family moment for Rangers.

Nice the positive connections continue. Now, any fullbacks handy down the back of the Allens' sofa?

I do think people forget that typically you are paying 1-3m in loan fees plus salary for the best premiership youngsters / loans and some guarantees of game time, the idea that we just send him back and pick up someone better to sit on our bench is for the birds. He's just had the worst game of his life in some trying conditions, with the players either side of him also putting in rotten performances. Some bad luck there too with the penalty. If he is going to grow as a player / professional it's the epic failures you learn the most from.

We have to suffer his epic failures so he can be better for someone else in the future - that's exactly the problem.
