Don't get me wrong, I DO actually like Ken Paal - but only in his attacking format.
I have griped and moaned (as many will know and probably will comment) for the last two seasons and despair at his defending!
How many times are we going to see Paal beaten and a cross come in from close quarters or the goal line to the centre of the box leading to a simple tap in. Time and time again the ball goes to our right and 15 seconds later they score a goal.
(This is how sensitised to this weakness I am, I couldn't watch the match yesterday but was keeping track and asked someone who was at the ground whether any of the first two were balls played past Paal and crossed in to the centre and sure enough one was! I'm not psychic, so how did I know that this WOULD be the case? - and if I know this, other teams know this, but clearly Ken doesn't get it! 
Surely they analyse and break down who should have done what for each goal and learn from things don't they? In any job, you WILL make mistakes but the key is to learn from them and not keeping doing more of the same?
Teams playing us probably rub their hands with goal inspired glee when they see Paal on the play sheet as a defender.🤔🤬.
We were unlucky with the third but their second, which put us under pressure was, in my opinion, due to Paal's continued lack of awareness and reaction.
But hey, I am probably once again talking rubbish and someone will advise me as such and cite that he does an outstanding job in defence, and clears balls off the line etc. [Post edited 27 Dec 13:39]

The answer to the problem though is generally one of three things - depending on who you believe.
We cannot afford to bring in any better
Our Manager should be able to coach what we have to be much better
Our scouting and recruitment team have been poor in recruitment for the last 30yrs
cos there are 1000s of cheap and better options out there if we had a decent set up |  |

I’ve been saying the same and raised it on here a few weeks ago, every time he plays we look so weak on that side and concede so easily, Ashby has been pretty solid and is a far better option for us on the left. It was noticeable how much we improved in the second half after he was hooked off. Due to both JCS and Fox lack of match fitness, we should have shifted Dunne to a back 3 with Smyth and Ashby as Wing Backs. Hindsight is always a better view!
Hopefully Morrison will be back Saturday, him and JCS in the middle is likely to be the best two, until Cooke returns?

Seems about a 50:50 split on here between those who rate him and those who don't. Personally I think he's been really poor this season and is consistently targeted by opposition teams. Maybe he's being told to tuck in close to the centre backs as it's baffling how often he leaves so much space for wingers to get crosses in. All that being said, Ashby isn't really any better. He plays with a bit more energy but his passing is very poor. Really hoping we can get a new left back in in January but they may prioritise a CB with all the injuries. | | | |

I'm not sure Ashby is even a footballer.
It's a shame as I think Paal has been an okay player for us over his time but clearly that time is coming to an end, certainly in his head.
Whoever we sign there needs to hit the ground running.
If Ken is to leave this window then ideally we need two or another who can cover LB as at the moment the only other answer we have is Saito that I can see. I don't buy this assertion that Colback could do a job there whatsoever; he'd be in the bath by 3:20pm

Doesn't get close enough to the attacker, continually backs off and is so easy to get past with a drop of the shoulder. Continually the wrong side. Continually up the pitch scrambling to get back.
Can't cross (generally bar one or two corkers), cannot beat a man (has he EVER run past anyone in his time here?) and generally passes backwards or sideways.
Yet many on here like him - I just do not get it and am expecting the Esox obligatory downvote on this one and a few others! I suspect that you are seduced by his nice touch, but that deserted him yesterday.
Add in the can't be arsed attitude he has shown throughout this season and we HAVE to find a way to get rid of him and replace him with something / anything in January. People will say, let Fox / JCS / Larkeche / Colback play there and you'll see how good Kenny is, but that is rubbish. Saito and Beenie have played there and looked better than Paal this season.

At the risk of being a stuck record, it’s a nightmare scenario really. Cifuentes has never rated him and was tacitly calling him out repeatedly last season, asking for players who were ‘brave’, the opposite of Paal who deliberately places himself behind a man so he can’t receive the ball.
The club then allowed local media to run all summer with the fact that they were desperate to get rid of him, only to find nobody else wanted him, and the replacements we were interested in we couldn’t secure.
We now have a LB who really wasn’t much cop in the first place now playing out his contract knowing full well that the club desperately wanted him gone and so unsurprisingly is completely checked out. | | | |

I quite liked him, thought when he joined there was some potential there. But he seems to be going backwards and his defending is just getting worse and worse. Yesterday was absolutely horrific. In his message, Nourry repeatedly makes reference to 'we' (I don't think he's using the royal we) and 'the group' as the basis for recruitment decisions. What beggars belief is the idea that that group wouldn't include Marti as an active contributor, as well as the other coaching/ development staff. If the squad is short, unless he really is some kind of dictator with the 'front of house' as his puppet administration, it's a collective leadership issue. What's also interesting is MC is currently making noises about not necessarily needing or wanting a lot of activity in the window, but instead wanting to focus on in-house development. I have worries about Nourry, for sure, but, for all these reasons, I don't accept or agree that all our problems should be laid at his door. [Post edited 28 Dec 2:37]

His biggest fault is the amount of space he gives to oppo RW. OK going forward and linking with Chair but a defensive liability, especially with Fox inside.
May well have checked out given his contract situation and well publicised attempts by the club to move him on.
Alternatives aren't great, are they? Colback or Fox? Zarkeche - out on loan, but injured. Shannon or Leahy from DS? |  |
