Yes it's seriously wrong. So why are they doing it? I think the most likely explanation is the whisper we've heard previously that the board are split, with Ankersen backing RM. Remember that RM is part of Ankersen's long term master plan to move all SR clubs to the same possession based style. Ankersen is supposedly the football brain on the board (what a joke) so for him to be overruled on a football matter would not be a small issue - so that is probably the reason for the inaction.

there is a school of thought that is emerging of late that says that the gap between the Championship & Premier League is so great that promoted clubs have two options and both are a big gamble.
1. They can spend big and hope that it is enough to keep them up and then they can build on a second season, but if they do go down then they are financially down the pan and perhaps not able to compete in the Championship for promotion
2. Try and build a squad without sidling the club with truly big transfer fees and wages, if you stay up then you can again build on those foundations, but if you go down then you are not too financially strapped and can mount a strong promotion challenge
Both are gambles.
Personally i am beginning to think that yes Russell Martin could well be a good manager in the Championship if we go down, but if he gets us back up we are just going to repeat this season again as he enforces his style of play to players not good enough |  |

The sooner the top clubs income wise ( Man City, Man Utd , Arsenal etc etc ) get their wish and bugger off to a European Super League the better as far as I’m concerned.
I haven’t enjoyed any part of our return to The Premiership. It’s now simply a league dominated by money with the top few teams effectively just large businesses with football teams attached.
I’m already looking forward to next season in The Championship. Cheaper seats, more games, sensible K O times ( our upcoming game against Spurs starts at 19.00 on a Sunday for pity sake ) and none of the utterly pathetic V A R where biased non entities not even at the grounds decide match outcomes. If Martin's still here, we'll be in trouble if he can't learn how to change to modern tactics. We were lucky to finish as high as 4th the last time (9 points below the automatic promotion places), but we won't get away with playing possession football next season. Even all the Championship managers will know how to beat us now, and the novelty of losing to teams like Hull will have well and truly worn off by then. [Post edited 28 Nov 9:41]

I want Southampton to be in the highest league possible.
Wanting to play in a league below which the objective is to gain promotion seems strange.
We have a team of 90% Championship players and a manager who is too stubborn change his style of play to suit the ‘tools’ at his disposal.
So The Championship is where we are heading.
The club and the city need to be in The Premier League.
There’s plenty of one time Premier League clubs that are stagnating in the lower leagues. | |

That's just not realistic. Never has been. Never will be.
RM's system is extreme in its focus on possession and so it's extreme in the type of players required to play it. Throw in the fact that this is the PL so the players ALSO need to have great physicality and you are talking about the best players in the world.

Possession football's days are numbered. It's been well and truly rumbled. Even Man City can't play it successfully any more without Rodri. The fact we're still contemplating playing it next season is concerning, to say the least.
The last time we were in the Championship most teams used to sit back and let us get away with it; they won't any more. Championship forwards will be queuing up to pick off those wayward sideways passes we make in front of our own goal. [Post edited 28 Nov 11:20]
