Got his critics while I'm a fan, but wherever you play him, he puts in a shift. Compare his out of position performance today to Fox's the other day.
Great player for us.

That is exactly the ball that Celar needs. I've been banging on for weeks that Celar has been making that run, but that the ball is not being played in.
His goals reel that was posted when we signed him showed a lot of goals coming from that sort of pass.

The problem is those balls are low percentage and not actually good balls to play. It’s a bad run from Celar too. It’s all too straight. Pass threaded dead straight through the middle are so hard to get right and not have them intercepted, and then the weighting has to be perfect as anything overhit and the keeper will collect. It’s why you’re taught to play through balls at an angle (towards the corner flags) and they should be for a run coming at an opposite angle. This maximises your room for error on the pass and takes the keeper out of it. Celar is only making straight runs. That is the problem. He might have been successful at a lower level but he needs to angle them at this level.

Echo the positives for Sam in this thread, but I have to say I think we look better in midfield without him... He's both one of the best in the team without the ball and one of the worst with it - CB/LCB suits him I think, and I am more than happy with him filling in there for JCS as necessary.

yeah I thought we looked miles better in midfield without him, was Madsens best game for us until we moved him to the right for some reason

The midfield looked better because there were three of them and not two. If Field had been one of the three he'd have looked good too.

Sam Field is ALWAYS one of the first names on my team sheet

If Cook weren’t about Sam would be my Captain

We need more angled passes and more angled runs from our marquee CF. Whether he's got the nous and we've got the players looks like another question right now.

I really like Sam in defence.

Can Field marshall the defence very well when called upon.

Yes he can.

I've got the Power.

Not saying that's not part of it, and he's been a key element in some of our best teams and performances in recent years, but in certain games that require us to have more of the ball, be progressive, get forward through midfield, he just can't do it...

I'd be interested to see his stats for assists, or even progressive forward passes. You could argue it's not his job, but if you're playing in central midfield - especially as a two - you need more than to be just a shield.

Also to caveat this, I'm a big fan of Field, I love what he does for us and his consistency and commitment to the cause is something we need more of generally. But I do think he's very limited and when he doesn't have to do more than just the things he's good at - like when he plays as a defender - he (and we) look better for it.

Agree with most of these comments. Maybe I missed it but I'd add Field wasn't always as good playing at CB as he has been this season. He used to get into the wrong position but looks to be much more comfortable there now. Only on that early gap between him and Cook that the Window nearly exploited an open door yesterday did they look not quite right.
