Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 18:00 - Jan 28 with 4952 views | D_Alien | Let's start with a few positives: Dodgson looked solid and composed, great addition to the squad Mellor showed he's going to improve us We didn't get clattered and might've snatched a point But on the whole, another poor display and i've lost any remaining patience with Kelly (we improved when he went off) and Rodney, who looks like a strong lad but just gets knocked off the ball virtually every time. Eastwood can go back to Sheff Utd right now, a waste of a loan. Thought McNulty did okay and he gave Kelly a right bollocking after we'd conceded Quigley looked more interested and the ball started to stick up front when he came on, but the disallowed goal aside we didn't put anywhere near enough pressure on Carlisle Bennett has to start in midfield, and i'd go with him and Diagouraja instead of Kelly & Ball The home straight is hoving into view, and there's nothing else for it but to pick ourselves up and go again, but Bentley has to make the right decisions Finally: Danny Lloyd. Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 18:06 - Jan 28 with 4868 views | mikehunt | I’m not there just yet. If EBJ. An get at least one more half decent player in, on top of Bennet, we might stand a chance. Let’s face it, any team in this division could have lost 1-0 to Carlisle. The new recruits played well. It’s what we do from here on in that matters. The performance after the subs gave me some hope. Even Quigley looked like he cared and caused them some problems. I have to say that calling our players out after a few minutes is just asking for them to not give a sh1t.

Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 17:04 - Jan 28 by 442Dale | It’s the hope… After the subs we had a real go and having the goal ruled out was a sickener. Guessing that the assistant always thought Henderson was offside, he looked it, and he was unsure if it was a Carlisle head or Quigley who knocked it onto him. Then they conferred to give it off. If he’d flagged straight away the disappointment would have been minimal. |
Bentley seems to think it was a very tight decision in his interview. We might have been unlucky to not get a point in the end. Also talks about possible ins and outs still to come before the window closes.

Can't agree about Jim. Very slow, and mad a few bad mistakes, plus should have been booked at least once. Staggeringly, he looked composed at times, and like a giraffe on a skateboard at other times. Taylors distribution was awful to watch at times. Keohane is so scared of a forward pass that its untrue. Mellor did ok, but my mom was Dodgson, who was excellent especially as an attacking threat. Good crosser too. Annoyingly, he plays where Lloyd is best playing, so we had to move him infield where he had a much quieter game. Agree about Eastwood. Just what on earth we thinking .Awful waste of a loan. Hendo and Quigley improved us hugely so why wait so long to bring them on? EBJ is guilty of making some big mistakes. There's no way Keohane should be captin and as for leading by example crickey he passed it backwards way too much. Kelly went off it tears today. Either because he has a bad injury or because he knows he played badly. The disallowed goal looked to be offside, but the officials made a right mess of it. a full minute after it went in until the liner put his flag up. What a mess. If I had to call it now I would say we are down. But I will keep going till the end.
Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 18:25 - Jan 28 with 4670 views | Newbury_Dale | Would love a central midfielder with a bit of quality. Ball, Kelly, Diaghoura, keohane, not one of them upto the standards required. A complete vacuum in there at the moment, so hard to watch. We've had some tremendous midfielders in the recent past. Kennedy, Dawson, Morley, Allan, Camps, Rathbone, Lund. No chance of signing anyone of that calibre but it's our biggest weakness for me.
Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 18:41 - Jan 28 with 4541 views | DaleiLama | So, football's governing body decided some time ago to make the liner responsible for offside only and to become detached from the rest of play. Today marked the logical next step - the liner can't even make his/her own offside decision anymore. The games gone. #ripliners

Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 18:46 - Jan 28 with 4488 views | HullDale | I'm probably being overly pessimistic, but today felt like the first proper nail in the coffin of our 100+ year EFL history. When we play well & win its great, and when we play badly & lose there is the hope that we could play better and turn it around. The second half today we played close to the potential of our starting XI and still couldn't break down an averagely talented, well coached and dark arts expert Carlisle team... they didn't look particularly brilliant and it speaks volumes for Lg2 that they are pushing for an auto promotion spot. Mellor looks like a stronger Sinclair, and Dodgson looked decent (although you could see his frustration that he was seeing passes and options that his teammates just weren't capable of), so those plus Bennett offer a glimmer of hope. After defending Eastwood's overall performance in his first game, his 2nd & 3rd games raise huge questions about the dropping of O'Donnell. I don't know where we go from here, but I know I want to start seeing the Dale team that reflects me, our club and our town that EBJ has talked so much about. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 19:03 - Jan 28 with 4342 views | NorthernDale | I admit, I was wrong in my initial assessment of the signing of Mellor and Dodgson and so apologise. I thought Mellor played well and Dodgson was solid at fullback. The signing of Bennett could be a positive signing and hopefully we can get additional bodies into midfield by deadline day. For the first 70 minutes we looked poor, and in truth Carlisle did not looked like promotion candidates, this may be due to our defensive performance overall, besides the one fatal mistake. I thought we played well in the last 20 minutes with Quigley and Henderson, combining with Mellor we created openings, it was a pity about Henderson's disallowed goal, it is that something like 3 in the last 5 home games, that he's had a goal disallowed. Next week I would start Bennett in defence next week, but we need to be more attacked minded, like the last twenty minutes today, because in our position we have little to lose at the moment.
Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 20:11 - Jan 28 with 3898 views | TomRAFC | The big positive for me today was Dodgson. Looked nifty and had a good cross on him. Mellor showed real effort, where he'll sit on the Dagnall to Donnelly scale of hardworking strikers is something we'll have to wait and see. Quigley ran like mad when he came on and was constantly shouting for the ball. Didn't go and celebrate with the rest of the lads when we thought we'd scored, which seemed a bit odd. As for negatives, other teams are onto Lloyd. We've been scouted by the opposition and he's not an unknown quantity anymore. We've seen it before with the likes of Baah and Kelly. They look fantastic until other teams cotton on to them. Eastwood is a shambles. Didn't know whether to come off his line or not and ended up stranded for their goal. Carlisle clearly had a shoot on sight policy, and you can see why. He can't kick to save his life, and to have so few career games under his belt at 26 should be a huge red flag. If we'd brought in a Logan or Lonergan to add quality then fair enough. I can't image what O'Donnell must be thinking. If he is meant to be a sweetener for the Brierley trial then we've been had. What took so long to call the goal offside is baffling but sadly I thought it was coming. [Post edited 28 Jan 2023 20:15]

There had been blind side use of elbows three times before McNulty was pole axed. Should have been a red. They then had a spell of falling over at any little brushing together and the ref duly fell for it and gave a booking and free kicks galore. At the end, not only did he disallow our goal after seeming to signal it, he didn’t give us the full 4 minutes of injury time.

Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 21:53 - Jan 28 with 3324 views | 49thseason | Ross Joyce has been dogshit every time I have seen him up here. He has no real control and then when players start to take advantage of his weakness he starts throwing yellows and sometimes reds around like confetti. The Carlisle number 5 could easily have been sent off just for mouthing at the Ref, but by the end of the game, the Carlisle players were his best mates. The Penalty shout looked nailed on to me and I don't understand why the little bald lino with the girly run didn't stand his ground and not give Henderson offside. It looked like Joyce made the decision (from outside the penalty area), and ultimately the lino went along with him, that the pair of them had to be escorted off says it all really. Kelly being forced off was a victim of Joyce's weakness, another referee would either have sent off the lad who assaulted him or more likely would not have allowed the game to get so fractious. At one stage, I thought we were heading for one of those games that would be played 9 a side but Joyce decided not to upset the Carlisle fans and chose his regular option of upsetting us instead. Plus ça change... I thought the new lads did OK today but we didn't ever really apply any lasting pressure. The Subs should have been made just after half time if they were ever going to make any difference, it seems as though 70+ minutes is some sort of magical time for Bentley to make changes. Sadly it was another single goal defeat , I think our 14th so far, We needed firepower, and we got a poor goalie, a semi-retired defender, a promising left back and a forward with little real experience but who seemed to at least have some pace and directness. Overall its not looking good is it? If we can't score goals we will go down, its not complicated, better to go all out to win and lose by 2 or 3 than keep losing by a single goal, a loss is a loss. Goal difference isn't likely to be of much consequence in the final analysis My heart says we could have won 2-1 today with a better team of officials, my head tells me that nothing much has changed despite 4 new arrivals. Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 08:54 - Jan 29 with 2718 views | NorthernDale | On the football highlights show last night, they said the Carlisle player was lucky not to be sent off for the elbow. Bentley was scathing about the linesman disallowing Hendo's goal, I am unsure if he was or not offside, having watch the EFL highlights show and I agree we should have had a penalty. A lot of fans around me were also moaning at Eastwood performance, especially his kicking and I am baffled, when we attack as in the last twenty minutes, we looked decent, but we spend seventy minutes looking rubbish, it is so frustrating to watch. At least we still in the fight, but February is going to be tough with Salford, Northampton, Stevenage, Orient and Stockport awaiting us.
Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 09:15 - Jan 29 with 2656 views | fourfourtwo | Thoughts on yesterday: How Eastwood is starting is now beyond me. His confidence is shot. He needs dropping and ROD reinstating immediately. I’d love to know what’s gone on here but doubt our media team will question Bentley. Or they’ve been told not to. I understand starting with a back five against a very confident Carlisle team. However the minute we went behind McNulty should have been sacrificed and Toums brought on as another body in midfield. We’re now back to the RS days of playing five at the back week in week out and wondering why we’re not scoring? That linesman was awful. Elbow in the first half was a shocker, nailed on red. We had a clear penalty. The goal is very dubious either way but the way in which the ref dealt with it was shambolic for me. A very poor day for the officials. Lloyd is redundant in this formation. We need him in wide areas of the pitch to get on the ball and cause problems. He gets lost when he’s asked to play centrally. Kelly injured agin, no surprise there. You can clearly see which players are up for it and which aren’t. Hendo offered more in 5 minutes than Rodney did in 50. Quigley looked fired up for a change. Thoughts moving forwards: Have to drop Eastwood. With Seriki and the new lad at LB we can cause teams problems there. Scrap this five at the back nonsense and give teams something to think about. Get Lloyd back out wide New lad up top us more about him the most of the deadwood but yet again Odoh still made it into the pitch. We may as well bring Cloughies statue on it would probably have more impact. What is going on with Campbell? Was on the Twitter video walking in the ground yet doesn’t make the bench? Interesting to see where Rhys Bennett will play. Does he see him as a solution in the middle of the park or at the back? Ideally we would ship a few more out during the next couple of days, somehow see Brierely to Sheff U and somehow get some money (no idea how this will work when they’re embargoed) and then bring another few in.
Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 09:51 - Jan 29 with 2546 views | EllDale | I agree totally with most of the posts above. I was ambivalent about Eastwood until yesterday. His distribution is woeful and the most consistent thing about him is the way in which he kicks the ball straight into touch. I'm not talking it about being just out of the field of play either, one effort late on was in danger of hitting Cloughie's statue. We suffered badly as well from the dismissal of EEL and Graham up at Hartlepool the previous week. It shows how highly Cameron John is regarded by the management that he couldn't get into a back three with that lineup. Big Jim found himself in a real battle with their number 36 Gordon. Jim clattered him and the ref played advantage and I'm sure the elbow was a bit retaliation for that. Jim didn't half give Kelly a boll0cking after their goal as well. Taylor had played Kelly into trouble big style just before that and Carlisle really should have scored from that passage of play. We play around at the back and yet when we do launch it it comes straight back again with no genuine target man on the pitch. It's absolutely ludicrous that we can't apparently play Brierley when we're screaming for a decent midfield player. As for the positives... Quigley looked well up for it when he came on and that sort of physical game suits him. He really is an enigmatic figure. I was watching him at halftime when the subs came out onto the pitch and noticed that he applauded the girls under 10s team all the way down the touchline which was a nice touch from him. ROD was doing the same. The two new lads look like they can both make a positive contribution as well. It's so frustrating though that Dale could have had a point from a team fighting for promotion. They were bigger and much better organised but they hadn't been thrown together on the day before the game. The bottom line though is that since the beginning of December we've lost to Hartlepool twice, Harrogate and Colchester. If we go down we could well look on the last two months as the time when the die was cast. [Post edited 29 Jan 2023 9:52]

Presume you mean Keohane when you refer to the most regressed player. Have to agree he is a shadow of the player he once was. Struggle to work out how he even gets in the team at the moment. I couldn't help noticing at half time yesterday the difference in how both teams subs were keeping warm. Carlisle's subs had set routines overseen by a coach. Our subs kicked the ball aimlessly in the air with no urgency or intent. We need to be more professional. Also I had a good view of the disallowed goal and personally thought Henderson was offside. In addition I think we were being optimistic if we thought the penalty incident was a nailed on penalty. I think a degree of apathy has set in and the team need to get more proactive whilst there is a slim chance of staying up.

To be fair, Odoh had our only shot on target in the second half yesterday. Bought a decent save from their keeper as well. I thought Mellor was OK overall for someone who'd been thrown in at the deep end after only just signing, but he didn't do a lot. Surprised that the substitutions weren't made sooner. Obviously Bentley can't legislate for injuries/suspensions etc. but the constant chopping and changing of the lineup smacks of desperation in the hope that summat might click.
Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 15:00 - Jan 29 with 2012 views | DaleiLama | The pool loss felt like the last nail in the coffin to me, but yesterday didn't feel like relegation standard football somehow. It wasn't inspiring, but nor was it dire either. Both new lads looked like good options for EBJ and with Rhys and possibly 1 or 2 more, some of my hope has returned. We are in a very deep hole. And these may also be the hallucinations of a drowning man imagining a tree stump to cling on to is about to come floating by, but we did fight yesterday and there did seem slightly more pride and purpose about us. I do wish we'd play quicker and on the front foot more though instead of all the negativity. We need to take risks to take 3 points. Fortune favours the bold. [Post edited 29 Jan 2023 15:01]

Carlisle United (H) Match Thread on 05:04 - Jan 30 with 1310 views | Sandyman | To be fair to EBJ, he's brought Lloyd, Mellor and Dodgson in and we look better with them on the park. Hopefully Bennett can be as good as he was. Useful in the old "Peter Cavanagh" role connecting midfield and defence maybe? Played Lloyd in the wrong position v Carlisle, but he still worked his butt off for the team. Unlike some. Seeing Ball and Eastwood starting, you just know what is coming next. Ball could sit on a rocking chair in the centre circle for 90 minutes and be of more use. Eastwood is a liability who should never appear for our club again. If we "have" to play him because of some deal that can't be with transfer embargoed Sheffield United re: Ethan Brierley, we have been stitched up big time. Suicidal, and a gift to those saying "managed relegation". Not being able to replace an injured Liam Kelly with Brierley speaks volumes. We are struggling, we need that talent. Remember that song the Barmy Army sung to Aussie bowler Mitchell Thompson? Replace the word "bowls" / "bowling" with "kicks" / "kicking" and Jake Eastwood for Mitchell Thompson. It fits. Odoh had a good shot saved, but still hasn't contributed an assist in over 70 games for RAFC. No end product ever comes of his "runs". He has no place in a struggling team but still finds one. Why? Another gift to those saying "managed relegation". Have we ever seen a slower Dale side? One that is so lacking in urgency and movement? Possibly under BBM and Stockdale but EBJ should have them a lot sharper by now. Well done Quigs and Hendo (and Toums to a point) for kicking the rest of the team up the arse and showing some fire when they came on. The league table looks awful. The team little better in a poor quality division. Since Hill was rightly sacked second time round, on the pitch we've had a relegation, a couple of relegation survivals and a draw at Man U. to shout about. We deserve to be where we are this time round. Having fought so hard to keep the leeches and launderers out, it hurts even more. Fans are rightly feeling lacklustre at watching less than lacklustre and turn up because it's what we do. As nice as Big Jim's applause is, it doesn't change anything. Without more organisation and endeavour on the pitch, we're down. Fans can't change that situation much. It's down to those paid within the club to save us. If the lazy ones CBA, they can do one, leave the payroll. Professional footballers, you are not. Up The Dale.
