Hornets on Sunday 19:31 - Feb 24 with 296768 viewsEllDale

They’re tweeting that their “matchday operations” are being restricted for the home game against Barrow on Sunday for reasons that they don’t want to divulge at the moment.
The bottom line is that the crowd capacity is limited to 920 and there will be no cash admissions on the day.
Wonder what that’s all about?

and the trl board site is in overdrive with hatred of anything to do with Dale.

Sadly its a small number of pathetic hangers on who do not represent the long standing hornets fans.

Jonny come latelies blowing smoke up the orifice of the owner. One even revealing the name of another poster and requesting an opportunity to confront him or her.

All against board rules but it seems the moderator doesnt do much moderating.

Surprising what one defeat can do despite loading up with two week signings.

I do want to see Hornets enjoy a successful season but that's definitely in spite of some involved with the club.

FWIW I think Hornets should concentrate on developing young talent in partnership with Mayfield, as opposed to collecting 'names'. Nothing wrong with experience but Hornets are experience-heavy in my book. There's certainly enough potential talent knocking about, Matty Ashton being a prime example. Somehow, he slipped through both Rochdale clubs' clutches, ending up with Swinton and then Warrington.

When you're surviving on sub-900 crowds, it's surely common sense that you'd look at a sustainable model which generated revenue (via sales), as opposed to spending money you don't have chasing a brighter tomorrow?

I'd never been on that board before, but just went and had a quick look. Clearly there is animosity towards us from them but, playing devils advocate, if a neutral read that board and this one I think they'd say it was about the same from both sides.

One thing that did stand out though..

'The club is operating a sustainable budget and any player spend outside of the budget is supported by generous sponsors and the board.'

Is that even allowed? & if it is surely its not sustainable. Essentially they have a budget, but are happy to go above the budget being casually bankrolled by individuals. Seems a very strange operating model.

Apologies Judd, didn't realise that. Which makes it all the more ridiculous Hornets lost out on him to Swinton.

And he grew up a big Swinton fan, so even if Hornets had been interested I don't think they'd have been able to stop him from going to his boyhood club.

Tangled up in blue.

It's so frustrating to read these constant snipes at the legal action by the Hornet on that message board. It's almost as if he/she is enjoying it all.

We do know that once the Stadium was bought back by the football club and the lease agreement for Hornets was agreed in 2016, concerns about the structure of the deal were vehemently raised at an AGM by former Directors. Why was this? Length of lease? Rental amount? Cost increase escalator not included?

The last P&L made available to football club shareholders came with the 2019 accounts and below is a selection of stadium-related expenditures:

Rates & Water - £80k
Insurance - £25k
Light & Heat - £86.5k
Pitch maintenance - £81k
Stadium maintenance - £60.5K

The above adds up to £330,000 and we have all seen what costs have risen more recently.

What would be a fair rent in contributing to some of the above essential costs?

What do Hornets actually pay?

What did they pay during lockdown? Were any government funds available and paid to the football club?

On 7th April this year the Trust asked the following of the RAFC board and got the appended response:

Hornets

Q: How are relations with the Rugby Club at the moment? It’s been noted that they have operated under certain restrictions for their home games so far.
A: The Club conducted a review of all lease agreements as part of a Health and Safety review during the season. This wasn’t just with Hornets, but was with other lease holders such as Icon Sports, the NHS amongst others. Hornets are currently fully up to date with rent payments, and are currently operating within the rules of the lease agreement. As part of that, they have to operate under the Football Club’s Safety Certificate which makes the RAFC Board liable for its matches, hence the need to ensure that no one operates outside of the lease agreement.

The football club state that Hornets are fully up to date with rent payments. Clear and unequivocable. Positive statement. May answer my question about lockdown.

The football club states that Hornets operate within the rules of the lease agreement. Clear and unequivocable. Positive statement.

As part of the lease agreement, Hornets have to operate under the football club's safety certificate. Clear and unequivocable, but I do wonder if the adherence to the lease agreement has seen operational changes implemented as a result of regime change which have not gone down well with Hornets new board? Were rules being overlooked previously and the application of these rules causing the anger within the Hornets camp?

I recently attended a joint event hosted by the Community hub at which Hornets fans and Dale fans attended an evening featuring 2 Hornets guys who had published a history of their club and they gave a fantastic passionate presentation. It was noted that no rugby club officials were in attendance. The "AFC" Chairman was there.

And why play some home games on a Saturday when the towns' amateur rugby league clubs play? Not exactly community spirited if it draws attendance away from local clubs, is it?

Poll: What is it to be then?

Just a thought, are Hornets playing sat so that their game doesn’t clash with the Premier League final day on Sunday?

The last home game clashed with the Challenge Cup semi final double header and a Mayfield home game.

Is it a cost issue?

Well Kel for someone who by their own admission has no interest in Rochdale Hornets and Rugby League in particular, you seem to have adopted an unhealthy interest in Rochdale Hornets and their Chairman in particular. Perhaps I could recommend a visit to King Street in Manchester, to visit one of the city's finest practitioners, to assess this dramatic change in your personality...providing that his couch is comfortable for you.

Thanks for the advice but I’ll pass. If someone is going to wum on here and slate the football club then they can expect to get some back, erm, on here. It’s obvious Rochdale Glory is Mazey due to many reasons. I’m very good at this lark, trust me.

As usual judd, you ask some very thought provoking questions with evidenced replies.

I'm still unclear as to what the Rochdale Hornets are trying to achieve with their continued sniping - "The Hornet" and "Rochdale Glory" being relatively new posters and lack of profile in the town.

Indeed the scheduling of Rochdale Hornets games in direct competition with Rochdale Mayfield is at best naive management and at worst hostile to a community club known for a warm welcome. If you are pitching your games against Rochdale Mayfield that makes no sense at all.

It will be interesting to see how many get to Spotland on Saturday for the Doncaster game. Certainly on gates of less than 400 they must be struggling financially now to be sustainable and after this weekend have no home game until towards the end of July, thus no income.

Hornets did announce earlier that they are moving offices due to "inspections and essential maintenance":

Kel.....
I probably have more Dale friends than Hornets friends, I have never slagged off the football club, I go and watch them both whenever I can but would not consider myself a full time fan of either..refer back to my posts, the only whinge I had was when I was charged more for a pint at Rugby than I was at a Football match and simply wanted the ground restrictions sorted out, not an unreasonable request. Neither of us know what is going on. with regards to these restrictions. .but it is about time the situation was sorted out. I doubt that Rochdale Glory is Andy Mazey, I honestly think without his contribution Hornets would not exist today, make of that what you will....the tit for tat bitching on both clubs sites is unnecessary and counter productive, I hope it stops

Given it has no logic anyone would think that Rochdale Hornets are trying to take away from Rochdale Mayfield crowd. What other explanation could there be?

With a bit of planning and thought Rochdale Hornets could have all the Rochdale Mayfield crowd who don't travel on the weeks where Rochdale Mayfield play at home.

That, of course, would not happen as anyone from the town knows how well Mayfield are regarded - they have a friendly and reasonably priced bar and a warm welcome for visitors. Many are Dale fans.

I dont think that is the case because I know of at least a dozen fans that would put Mayfield before Hornets. The Hornets coach and players frequent Mayfield for social events etc.. as I say I dont know the Saturday reasons, will try and find out.

The Hornets coach is a former Mayfield player-coach and several of his team began their amateur careers at Castleton so there are obvious connections.
The current Hornets hierarchy have more mates at Leigh East.
