Genuine Open Question to Dave Sweetmore 14:23 - Jan 23 with 12820 views | Laveritty | Just a few days ago Elvis Costello very publicly asked DJs and radio stations to stop playing his song Oliver's Army because of its use of a certain well documented offensive word. Whilst not wishing to get into a debate about the use of the word in question and its offensiveness I would simply like to ask why you then thought it would be appropriate to play the said song yesterday? It was a staggeringly crass decision in my opinion!

Genuine Open Question to Dave Sweetmore on 20:26 - Jan 23 by R17ALE | Pre! Whether or not he sourced the quote I've no idea, but the amount quoted was treble what I was expecting, hence the no. Indeed, he had nothing whatsoever to do with the scoreboard purchase either. To his visible annoyance, he was told that the executors would personally oversee everything that Cloughie's money was going to be spent on. I was looking right at his face when he was told, and was alarmed/surprised how his eyes narrowed in annoyance. At the time I probably thought he had flatulence, but several months later I can hazard a better guess! |
I'm guessing this verbal quote wasn't fully itemised.

Genuine Open Question to Dave Sweetmore on 20:55 - Jan 23 with 4787 views | EllDale | To be honest I’m not over bothered about what type of music is played. Would just like to hear the teams read out clearly before the game (not shouted) and be advised clearly of all substitutions. Oh, and it would be nice to hear a few halftime scores as well.

Genuine Open Question to Dave Sweetmore on 17:40 - Jan 23 by nordenblue | Whilst not a fan of Sweetmore one bit, find him a totally plastic manc and he does get right on my nerves, I think the reactions a little ott to a song that's been played for decades seemingly without a problem. Granted things move on and opinions do change in time, but I'm not sure it warrants a public flogging though. |
This is not a dig at you NB, or anyone else who has commented on this thread, but thought it worth posting some context in relation to Costello's request: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/elvis-costello-o

Genuine Open Question to Dave Sweetmore on 18:57 - Jan 23 by diver | The word refers to Irish Catholic’s used during the Northern Ireland troubles and has nothing to do with current racism |
I don’t have much of an opinion on Sweetmore as I arrive in my seat at 2.58 and spend halftime in the Dale Bar. Your comment vexed me though. I’d love to hear your explanation of “current racism”? surely racism is racism regardless of era. What a strange ill informed and highly ill sensitive comment. [Post edited 24 Jan 2022 7:16]

You'll know, of course, that it contains the n word. I'm not sure why you want to defend that, given Costello's comments and request.

I was merely pointing out that the song was referring to Irish Catholics and is not related to current racial issues.Google It on wilkipedia which gives a full insight into the song

The issue is in the timing though surely, not the fact it's been played for decades without a problem. Things have moved on, opinions have changed, the story is in the media (several of us who aren't professional DJs had seen the story so I'm not buying that the professional DJ hadn't) and having never played it before, Sweetmore decided NOW was the time to do so? Just a bizarre decision.

Fair point. That's not the issue for me, I don't know the lad who was going to take over from him. If anything I'd thought very highly of Dave for years, I quite like that we play a lot of local music. For me it's not a one off thing but a pattern of behaviour around very grim language, often trying to push buttons. It's becoming less and less in keeping with the direction the club is going, and I feel very passionately about just what a fantastic direction that is.

Correction The young lad (who's name escapes me, so much was he a 'pal') was actually employed, then jocked off as they say in horse racing, but quite appropriately in this case too Do you think that's remotely acceptable? It was the old regime in action, in all its awfulness. I don't want our club to be associated with that, or the use of language by Sweetmore towards fans that would have him banned from football grounds I'll be blunt. Our board should act on this in a way that restores the integrity of the club after it was besmirched on Saturday, as previously, and as it risks happening again otherwise. It's their/our reputation on the line here OTT? Andrew Curran might think so [Post edited 24 Jan 2022 11:40]

Genuine Open Question to Dave Sweetmore on 11:50 - Jan 24 with 3633 views | SuddenLad | I have no personal agenda against Sweetmore per se, though I have criticised the volume several times previously. It's been made clear many times that the away supporters rate his style and music choices very highly and it is a positive factor in them attending games here. That's always good to hear, but it's once a year for them and once a fortnight for us. I would be quite happy to hear that DS has been asked to withdraw the controversial Costello record from his playlist for all future Dale games and leave it at that. He's 'Marmite', and he has a lot of positive feedback from some supporters.

My issue is (and always has been) a club employee referring to supporters as “peados” sic and then bizarrely claiming his Twitter account was hacked/the tweet was photoshopped. He should have just apologised for a lack of judgement but his ego wouldn’t allow it as he seems to think he can say and do as he pleases with no comeback. As alluded to recently by a frequently banned poster, some had to resign from a voluntary supporters role due to comments made elsewhere online making their way onto here. Given one is a paid role and one isn’t, I’ll admit to being surprised there wasn’t a similar reaction to the club employees comments. Might be a clique thing or summat… If you’re happy to be labelled a “peado” (sic) for posting on here then fair enough but I’m not. [Post edited 24 Jan 2022 11:53]

No personal agenda from me when I started the thread - I was just stunned to hear him play a record when the artist himself requested that it not be broadcast anymore lest it causes offence (regardless of the original context of the song). Why would anyone then think it appropriate to play it to 5,000 football fans? Also I don't buy the excuse that he might not have been aware of the request from Costello - if he wasn't then it is a bizarre coincidence that he happened to play a song, that I don't recall hearing at the COA for a long time, so soon afterwards. No witch hunt from me, I am not a member of any clique, I didn't know anything of 'the pal' who replaced him and I don't drink in The Cem. Simply dismayed at the lack of judgement shown by a club employee!

I think Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name Of' would fit the bill here (particularly the last 90 seconds)!

I'll be honest about the fact that Eden is a friend of mine and I thought the way he was treated in that whole debacle was disgusting - as was the reaction of Dave on Twitter. Nor did I even notice that Oliver's Army was played on Saturday. I still don't think that takes a single thing away from my post above about the decision to play the song this Saturday. Some people may think that means I'm one of the people with an 'agenda' against Dave Sweetmore but in all honestly, I really don't care who plays music before the game. I'd have loved for it to have been Eden doing it, but he'd have absolutely zero interest in doing so anymore so beyond that, I couldn't care less. What I would question is why on earth something as inconsequential as the music being played before a game is as controversial as it is, and why someone in a role that should be considered a relatively minor one has so many people that seem to have 'personal agendas' against him?

If my memory serves me correctly, he was given the job & actually took over the role for one match. When he turned up promptly for the next match he was told by Rawlinson that his services were no longer required. Not a professional way to run any kind of business - but as far as I can gather, it's par for the course with him.

Rawlinson wouldn’t know professionalism if it smacked him right in the chops. This is the bloke who once told a supporter with a successful business that he had “no business acumen” and also told loyal supporters to fook off. The “cancer within the club” (tm Sweetmore when describing the trust) is slowly being cut away.

Yes - had my own (well documented at the time) run in with the odious Rawlinson back in 2016 when he waved me out of the ground with a wan ker gesture. Delighted he's gone and I am still attending Dale matches with the added bonus of not having to see his smug face sat a few rows behind me! Wonder what he does with his Saturday afternoons now - perhaps he joins his mate at AFC Fylde?

I remember your hurt at the time of Rawlinson throwing his excessive weight around. I think I urged you to stay with us at the time. Since then, the badduns have mostly been weeded out thanks to fans, only a few to go now, and we, the fans, are still here. And to answer the earlier question of what Rawlinson does on Saturdays: He still turns up on home days thinking he's contracted as a Director until June 2022. Or is it 2023? Forgive me if I've got the years wrong Brian.

I saw the cretin stood outside the pub on the bridge in Castleton where you can turn left for the station. Apologies I’m not overly familiar with Castleton. It all happened a little too fast for me to shout anything worthwhile.

The road off to the right there is Heywood Road, home to the now closed (and converted to flats it seems) Director's Arms. Ironic that an ex-Director should be loitering a stones throw from the ex-Directors.
