Taxpayers Shouldnt Be Paying for Kiddie Meals 18:28 - Oct 15 with 18764 viewsPoirot

If 'parents' cant afford to feed their kids they shouldnt have them in the first place.

Where's daddy ? bookies, pub or banged up again ?

Its child neglect if you cant feed your kids, so turn off netflix, sky sports, buying endless tattooes and actually get a job. I do some work at schools and see teachers feeding pupils their breakfast because parents havent. Total disgrace

There is a huge difference in being “proud” of who you are and of your heritage and believing that you are “special”. If you are not sure what I mean, just look at the KKK or the Nazis for people who believed that they were/are “special”. Then compare that with the likes of Martin Luther King who was “proud”. Granted, these are extreme examples, but I am sure that you get my drift.

British and proud is what I’m talking about. If you’re born here and grew up here, nothing wrong with being proud of that. This country is a long way from perfect but one of the best in the world.

We have the NHS, one of the best health care systems in the world. If that doesn't make us special, I don't what does. In comparison to the USA, Russia, Brazil, North Korea, Venezuela, even France, we live in more harmony here than most places, in a tolerant society. It's not arrogance, it's just the truth!

In my experience people from a lot of other countries think they’re pretty special too. It doesn’t make them fascists or members of the KKK, FFS.

The French definitely think their country is special, as do Italians and Spaniards of theirs. Many people who live in cities also think their city is special too - have you met any New Yorkers? And let’s not even think about people from Wales and Scotland or even Cornwall and Yorkshire. Are they all facist right wing scum too?

I fail to see why the citizens of the U.K. are assholes in Sogs’ eyes if they dare to think their country is in any way special....

There’s a difference between thinking your country is great (as I do) and thinking its ‚special‘.

Special implies that it’s uniquely great, and fundamentally different from all other countries. It’s ultimately stupid - because it’s not true - and divisive - because it allows us to treat others as less than us.

It’s particularly stupid in relation to Continental Europe which has contributed at least as much to world history and culture as the UK.

And saying this is not to belittle the UK, its just not to be a ridiculous jingoist about our place in the world.

Semantics.

Either you think your country is great/special/different or you don’t. To all intents and purposes it means the same in this context. I think we’re a special country and if I was a Frenchman I’d think France was special and so on.

As someone said earlier, I think Saints are special but then every fan of every club thinks the same about their club.

I suspect that you’re so well meaning Sogs, that you’ve got to the point where you’re almost paranoid about being thought of as a nationalist/patriot/xenophobe etc by expressing a genuine non-malicious view which Just might be construed as non-pc by the chattering class thought police.

For all that, I generally enjoy your posts!

Hmmm...an interesting point Chesham (and thank you for your kind comment). I have been thinking about that. I was born and raised in south London for the first 10 years of my life. I was very proud to be so as London seemed to be the centre of the universe in the Swinging 60’s. We used to go on holiday every year to my Aunt’s b&b in Barnstaple and I absolutely lover getting out into the country, especially north Devon. I started to think that London wasn’t so special after all. I have been lucky to do some travelling in my life (not as much as I would have liked mind you) and have seen that there are many special places all over the world, inhabited by people who feel that their place in the world is also special.

Nothing wrong in being proud about anything but I do have a problem with bullying and people who feel that because of their “special” circumstances, that they deserve deference. My parents always voted Tory but we’re both quite liberal people in the sense that they believed in the live and let live doctrine. Growing up in the long shadow of WW2 we as kids were used to constant reminders of the atrocities of war. We played on bomb sites. Every family had stories about the Blitz or family members who had played a part in the conflict. There were war films on tv all the time.

Fortunately there have been no further major conflicts and I have lived in relatively peaceful times. I also want that for my children, my children’s children etc.

Far from being worried about being PC, I think a huge threat to peace is the belief that somehow we are better and more deserving than other through accident of birth. It is of course basic tribalism which served us well when we were living in tribes and scattered about vast plains. We have moved on massively since those days and our societies are much more intermixed and interdependent. To my mind tribalism is now redundant. We are all members of the same tribe and we will survive and prevail by working together, not against one another. Trumpet seeks to divide and conquer and the same us happening here with the current political situation.

My biggest regret, apart from Brexit, is that our only true centre party seems to have vanished to the point of pointlessness. Just a few years ago it looked like we were on the verge of a radical long needed overhaul in the electoral system, but Clegg chose to get into bed with Cameron and that put paid to electoral reform that would have seen the minority groups given more of a Boise in Parliament.

Neither the American electoral system nor ours is truly democratic and both counties now are in situations where compromise goes out of the window causing divisions and divide. Them and us. I don’t think that is healthy for both societies and those who have to deal with them on the outside.

Many of us grew up in the era of the Cold War. The only thing that has changed is that the “enemy” is ever changing, a bit like the premise of 1984. Russia, North Korea, China...take your pick, it doesn’t matter. We just need someone to feel superior to and better than so that we can justify the billions spent on arms that will probably never be used. Dumb.

I am quite happy to wave a metaphorical flag for my tribes in sport and want my tribes, Saints and England, to spank all comers at sport. Competition is healthy and fun up to the point that is becomes a way of suppression of the other competitors beyond the fun and games of sport. Empires, be they economic or geographic are not healthy . To use Orwell’s words again, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Russia, China and North Korea still flex their muscles in front of the world with their ceremonial goose stepping military and endless parades of military hardware. Don’t f*ck with us. Nationalism at it worst. We are special to the point that we will obliterate you if we have to.

Blimey, what a waffle! Do you get my point though? There is a fine line about being proud and being (or feeling) superior. We win a game of football and feel good because we have proved ourselves to be the better team, but everyone shakes hands at the end and we go back to being equals (albeit one bunch of people has the bragging rights). On the other hand, if you believe that you are a superior person to the one supporting another team and you spend your time fighting that person or treating them like sh it just because they support someone else, that is where we have a problem.

We may be British, Germans, French, Italian or whatever and we may all feel proud of our countries, but we are also just carbon based life forms trying to make a living and raise families etc. It is easier to do that if we pull together rather than spending our energies on forging divisions.

I don’t see that as being PC. I see that as wanting to live in a humane society where we all worked together for the good of all.

Okay. I need a rest now. Sorry for the ramble.

It’s not semantics for me. But to avoid any confusion, I am talking about the attitude that we as a Country are so much better than others. And particularly the attitude that we are somehow better than the other countries of continental Europe.

And it’s really nothing to do with being PC. It’s how I think about most things. It’s an ‚I’m OK, you’re OK‘ attitude taught to me by a lovely South African woman called Vanessa in the South of France in 1986. Far too much ‚I‘m Ok, you’re not OK‘ in this world - particularly in the last few years.

Peace and love, brother Chesham (and try harder to distinguish me from our friend, brother Sogs!)

I know one shouldn’t generalise from the particular, but that is appalling. What’s worse is it makes people who really need this support appear like scrounges when they’re not. As ever it’s the minority who fvck it up for the majority (like England fans used to)...

This is why the perfect Utopia that Sadoldgit suggests, would never work. The people being helped, take advantage. Human beings are mostly selfish and they will always find a way to be more "special", more "superior" than others. The idea that we can all be equal is flawed and naive. Read George Orwell's animal farm. We are all equal, except for......... Its a nice idea, but it involves every human being playing a selfless, honest role. Never going to happen - again that's the point.

I don't think anybody minds peace, respect for all etc, but the majority know that people are people and that's why socialism doesn't work. It moves towards communism and even then, you still have rich and poor.

But in terms of everyone being equal, you will find people of all sorts trying to be superior. This is why we have the sytem we have because you will never have everybody playing a fair and equal role. There will always be some people trying to get more than their fair share and / or playing the system for their own selfish needs, in any system. So the point is, socialism, as was implemented in Venezuela doesn't work. It leads to communism to force people to fall into line, but they still don't because human beings are selfish and are made to survive and look after themselves. North Korea is a communist state where "everyone is equal" apart from the ruling family etc etc. China is communist where "everyone is equal" , who would want to live there? It just doesn't work, there isn't real equality in communist or socialist states. They just pretend there is. And what you end up with as in Venezuela and N Korea, is more people being poor than in a capitalist society.

There are many things about the UK that are admirable and in worldwide terms it's a great place to live.

However, spending half my working life in mainland Europe tells me there's nothing special about the UK in many respects. The countries where I've lived have generally had less inequality, better public services, better pensions, better care services and children that are designated amongst the happiest in the world. This isn't my opinion, it's fact. All of these things come at a cost of course, but financing them collectively is a sign of a civilised society.

Sadly I don't see many of these things improving in the UK anytime soon.

Good points. There are too many c*nts that either slag the uk off at every opportunity, or on the other hand shout about how it’s the best in the world. The truth is there is a lot to be proud of and also a lot of shit.
Other than a few other European countries and a couple more round the world I wouldn’t say life would be much better anywhere else though.

Social media has f*cked the country for tolerance though, everything is a lot more polarised than it was before.
