The longest stage nowadays is actually shorter than the shortest stage in years gone bye. Given the fact they had heavy bikes with not much in the way of gears, running on beer and cigarettes, that was some achievement, back when men were men so to speak.

Was going to post this but thought it too esoteric. Vive le Tour!
Esoteric; do like that. Not sure i've ever actually used the word esoteric in everyday conversation before and what a terrific word it is! I'm going to be sure and use that somewhere this week if i get the chance.
Vive la tour indeed.

The longest stage this year (stage 12) comes through our area on 10 September.
If we get the same place as the last time 4 years ago, we'll see them come down a shallow hill with 30km/h speed bump just before a 90 degree left hand bend.
No incidents (sic!) last time, although we did get a shot of 3 of the teams in the pack. This included Peter Sagan's green jersey.
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one's lifetime." (Mark Twain)
